Good question. I am no physicist, but i'll try to explain some factors here: You need to release the discus with the index finger to make the implement spin faster. The faster the discus spins whilst in the air the more stable it is in the air, which helps it maintain its position and so fly farther. Consider a spinning top which stays upright for much longer when you spin it faster than when you just give it a little spin. It is much easier to give the discus spin by using the index finger. Also the index finger is longer than the little finger, so you are losing radius if you release the discus off the little finger, and even a small difference in radius makes a big difference in terms of distance thrown.
