Want to learn how to select the discus that will help you throw as far as possible? Want to know the difference between a $100 discus and a $300 discus?
In this video Erik Johnson Of Arete Throws Nation discusses Rim weight and how to select the right discus to help you throw far in competition. He discuses rim weight and the differnce between less and more expensive.
A high rim weight discus should typically be able to be thrown farther. However, throwers and coaches need to know how to select the right discus based on their ability and skills set.
In this video we do a little review Nelco Discus and discuss how to select the right discus because based on several things, the right discus will help you throw farther, but before you go buy the most expensive disc you can, you will want to know if the cheaper discus may actually fly farther for you. Check out the video and Also stay until the end to sign up to win a free nelco discus.

I love your videos. they are so helpful. I'm 71 years old and throwing discus, shot and javelin in Senior games along with golf, pickle ball and other stuff. I played sports all my life and always loved track and field though I played football at Clemson in the day. I'm throwing a 75 % rim weight and only throwing 125-130 ft. I'm 6-1 250 and should be throwing 150 or more . Not sure what the problem is except speed and strength and technique. The internet is my only coach. My goal is to finish top three in nationals next May in all three disciplines. I need to be throwing 140 - 150 in both discus and javelin. I hold the state record in the javelin my best event. But have a lot of potential I am not realizing. I'm throwing 40 ft. in shot but need five more feet at least. I now have easy access to weight room so am excited about lifting for the first time in my life.. It is all doable. I'm devouring your video's so thanks a bunch. Can seniors go to throws camps?

When I saw this link, I had a little nostalgia remembering the Saturn Pacer I had back in the early 90's after looking at a somewhat similar design in the video. I think Saturn was the first company to use the complete fiberglass (or whatever material) plates with no metal disk in the middle. The plates would literally invert 100% and you would have to step on it so it would re-invert pop back into place. It would eventually crack so bad at the screw hole that you could no longer use it. What a nightmare... I totally 100% assumed that the industry had certainly worked the bugs out after 30 years. I almost fell over when you started talking about plate damage. To quote the classic cliche: "We can put a man on the moon and we can't get the plate thingies worked out"? I am not poking fun at the quality of any of the brands, I just find this humorous 30 years later from my vantage point.

I am not sure if Erik agrees, but for those of you who are saying you only have access to rubber discs I would find a way to get a metal one. My highschool had crappie ones so I just got my own via Christmas present requests from my parents. Even the generic cheapies would be better than using the rubber ones. I bought one a couple of years as a gift for $34 and It was decent. One issue was that quality tolerances was not great and there was a tiny gap between the plates and the rim and a little grass would get stuck there. I was going to fix this by getting a little tube of car bondo and run it around the seams using a putty knife, but he had to quit due to an injury so I never got around to it. I did use rubber ones in 8th and 9th grades, and they are certainly better than nothing at all. Later, the only thing I really kept a rubber one around for was to screw a strap onto it to use when I was doing dry throws. Now, when I got hit in the head in the 8th grade I certainly wish that disc had been rubber ;-)

As a middle aged former youth discus thrower slowly getting interested again I love comparisons like this but I really feel the need to be a smartass about some of your explanations about the effects of rimweights and rpm (It's a characterflaw I really can't help myself). 1) higher rim weight will increase gyroscopic stability AND also make it harder to increase spin on the disc translating to less wobble on less than perfect releases as well as a more stable flight in choppy winds. 2) higher rim weight will NOT yield more rpm on the discus at launch but apart from the benefits mentioned previously the fact that we essentially "reverse" the spin on the discus from windup to release the stored energy in the discus with the higher rimweight essentially ends up "bracing" the discus slightly against our effort to "spin it" which "I imagine" allows for slightly more force to be directed into the throw itself.
@aretethrowsnation
@aretethrowsnation 11 ай бұрын
if you can apply spin you’ll benefit from higher rim weight. if you can’t (as you indicated) you wont benefit. since we made this video (4years ago) we created an entire program “Flight School” dedicated to teaching how to hold, spin, and fly the discus. so yes. pretty good assessment from a former youth thrower💪

our school does use a lot of nelcos. good value for beginning and intermediate throwers. our girls use the 80% RW a lot. the better intermediate uses the 83% Ultimo. fragile body plates is a problem tho. buying replacement plates--finding them- has plagued us. i do not like nelco flight characteristics for our elite throwers. they primarily use Denfi and Gill Pacers. all 85%+RW the nelco 80s are in the elites bag for the days they aren't cranking the revs....our school 400 students 40+ throwers--girls and guys safe estimate of 70+ discus' on hand.
