I'm thrilled to have sat down with Noah Paoa of Rapa Nui as we discussed the similarities and differences of both the Hawaiian and Rapa Nui languages. Noah is currently learning to speak hawaiian while simultaneously paddling for the outrigger canoe club and pursuing his Phd in sea level rise at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Rapanui language sounds like most of the dialects in the cooks and tuamotus/Havaiki. Reo means language and arero means tongue. Vananga can also mean the same thing. Metua tane for father. Papaha for foreigner Maniota for cassava Akangaru Aka'onu or akahonu Ava for channel or river That convo at the end I understood both💯 this must have been the interaction between Tupaia and the maoris. Love it.

In the cooks we eat poke, which is what tahitians call po'e. It prob similar to kulolo. You need to find some tongans on the island, theyll have plenty of manioke/ cassava.😅

Also forgot to add. In Tonga we call Cassava Manioke. If you ever want to find it in Hawaii, just come find some Tongans , you're always welcome our Rapa Nui brother 😂 🙌🏽

I know the Brazilian/Portuguese word - mandioca for manioca (sp?), and cassava for Filipinos and Mexicans call it yucca. Tapioca is made out of that root but just the starchy part whereas the flour is made out of the whole root. Also, I'm a DNA match to Noah. hahaha
