It baffles me that people act like the Ceedee and Chase situations are the same. Ceedee got his bag with one year left on his rookie deal (like literally every receiver) and Chase is still 2 years out. He’ll get a massive bag next year when his situation is the same as Ceedee and JJettas

The locker room sees how the team treats its best players. Don't leave Chase hanging. The problem is Bengals owner Mike Brown said at media day that he knows Chase is the second most important player on the team, but that the contract would not get done this year. The problem is these four and five year rookie contracts are very unfair to top players. That's too long to give teams control when the career of an NFL player is so short. Same with the franchise tag. It's similar to the NCAA 'sit out one year' transfer rule.

I feel like it’s always the smart move to pay the player. The worst case scenario is the player gets injured and never looks the same. However, there are multiple winning scenarios. The player can play incredibly and be worth the money and even if you don’t think he is worth the money down the line, then the player is still a valuable asset to trade. If you see a player in the draft that can potentially replace the player, then you can trade that contract away. It always makes sense to get the deal done early
