Just finished! It was my first Murakami, and I absolutely loved it. Page after page of just effortless, beautiful prose. Music was central, as you said, but what I found curious was how often hands (specifically fingers) kept cropping up. It was both beautiful and grotesque, haha. But, excellent review (certainly in agreement about the centrality of making things and the gorgeousness of that scene, the whole stretch of Finland scenes was simply stunning)!

Just finished it . Crying 😂.....really. When he met his last friend, Eri , their conversation and the trip in Finland was really emotional....The most beautiful goodbye to the past...

What a wonderful review and visual presentation. I really enjoyed your reading of the excerpts, and strongly encourage you to consider voiceover work, perhaps an audio book? Wind Up Bird Chronicles is on my list, and Colorless sounds fascinating.

Stumbled upon this video. I've read hard-boil wonderland and the end of the world, enjoyed that. I have been looking for my next Haruki Murakami read and I think this one is it. Thank you for taking time to make this.

This video was incredibly well-made. I just reread the book after a long time, and it really went over my head the first time. I checked it out to make sense of my sense of self I guess. It is very well-written, and this review does a great job of explaining the central themes of the novel. Thanks for the great content :)

What did you make of the character Haida? Especially with the surreal moment where we don't know if Tsukuru was dreaming or not, and how he sort of disappeared after that. It sort of reflected the reason why Tsukuru's older friends ceased conversation, and just had this eerie feeling to it.

The way you put together this video is really beautiful. I haven't read the book so I have nothing of use I can really put toward this discussion, but I just wanted to say good job!

I haven't read any of his works yet but now I'm wanting to. I've heard that his novels can be complex/challenging, so I've been saving them for fall/winter when I can settle in with tea.

I obviously haven't read this one yet, but I would like to! I need to get to it sometime. I feel like from the way you describe it, it will be something I would like. Also I am jealous when people live in places with underground trains.

It was good, and I think the part that I talked about would really appeal to you. It wasn't my favourite Murakami but there were some good moments! And you should just move to that place! Get your artist on!

Great video!! I was very interested in the role of sexuality in this novel. Tsukuru's relationship with Haida and the dream he has with Shiro.. Sex plays a role in many of his novels and its always very interesting to compare its exploration between novels. I loved this book and was only a bit disappointed Haida wasnt mentioned again, but there may be a reason for that i havent thought about yet.. Have you read many other Murakami's and how do you think this one compares? :)

Yes, sexuality in the novel was one of the other topics I had lots of notes and passages to bring up, but I knew I wouldn't have the time. It did seem strange that Haida came and went, but I notice that comes up in a few of his novels (I haven't read VERY much, just a handful of his novels and stories) but characters seem to come and go without much explanation. I guess life is like that. However, I would have liked more resolution with Haida, especially after the dream scene, because he also had so many dreams of Shiro, then there was the revelation of WHY Tsukuru was alienated from the group, so... I would have liked to have seen more dots connected. but like you said, maybe I haven't thought enough about it!

Great video. One thing to add: the T in the Japanese syllable “tsu” is silent so it sounds more like SUE KOO ROO

Awesome video...very nicely put together! Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki is the only Murakami book I've read so far but I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the way music was used and the ''Years of Pilgrimage'' piece is beautiful I heard that all of Murakami's books are ''musical'' like that... do you know if that's the case for all or only a few?

I've only read Norwegian Wood and the 1Q84 series by Murakami, something about the description of this particular novel made me not want to pick it up. However after watching this review, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage will be my next book buy.

Excellent review! I also got a galley of this book and read it in a day. I feel like it was a page turner in a way because it was easy to get into and it kept me reading. I enjoyed the part in Finland too, probably my favourite in the book but overall this book was not for me. I'm not a fan of Murakami's work, and I did like this better than I liked other books of his I've read. It's just not a story that stays with me even if I was entertained while reading it.
@JasonPurcell
@JasonPurcell 10 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, because I AM a fan of his and didn't find this one to be as good as his others. Totally fair though! It was an easy read, like you said. It definitely wasn't as challenging as his past works, but I agree with you that this story won't stay with me very long.
