Been playing FFXI since US Launch, so I know the feeling. Had to learn JP to get anything done, and the level cap was 70 when I first started. I think instead of it just being people to come back to the old days is really nostalgia. The grind, learning everything that's when it's so fresh in our minds, the pain of it and being miserable with other people. Going from "I quit" to starting again with friends. I actually met a few of my FFXI buddies in person. I even met a buddy on FFXI where I moved from Northwest to San Diego. This new server would be cool if a lot of people would come back. Unfortunately for me, I somewhat prefer the newer mostly solo way. Been there, done that. I guess in my old age, I don't have the time I did when I was a teenager. That was almost 20 years ago! Crazy to think it's been around that long.

Played back in 2003 for years made a lot of friends like everyone else I would not trade the memories for anything in the world. Came back like 6 years ago and even meet one of my old friends from back in the day! This game will always be the best!

I couldn't go back to a private 75-era server because I love red mage in retail too much. It's finally the job it should have always been. Going by the notes I read they're keeping RDM as the old Refresh-bot and debuffer in a context where most debuffs just never land while also reducing the heavy need for Refresh, leaving RDM as a mediocre healer. And the truth is that retail also has the old system of horizontal progression with trusts falling off as useful for anything but backup heals once you hit endgame. Seems like everything else I loved about the old days of FFXI, including all my friends, won't be on Horizon. But I hope it's able to succeed. If they ever make it to Adoulin I'll be sure to check it out

I think that some "quality of life" improvements were very necessary. When a game wastes your time as aggressively as early FFXI did, it's a problem. I say that with love, as FFXI is my favorite MMORPG of all time. I spent more than a literal year of my life logged in, and I never even got to true endgame content. So much time doing mindless and repetitive tasks, wasting hours for drops that would get claimed by bots, artificial scarcity of certain things to an absurd degree, etc... I would absolutely love to have a private server that recreates the content from the original release and gradually adds the expansions in over time, but also reduces the amount of sheer hours required to accomplish basic tasks so that adults with full time jobs and personal lives can enjoy it. I want all the challenge and social aspect, but just not the life-draining grind of repetitive tasks.

Those are all very valid points and I agree with most of them. In truth I would prefer some more QoL on this server and that may come as time goes on and expansions are released but if it doesn't it will take forever for me to progress to endgame and that's ok for me I'm in no rush. My reservation of Horizon is these private servers lives keep getting shorter. Nasomi was big for 3 years till everyone jumped to wings for the last 2 years. I don't expect Horizon to last any longer as other new things come along. My biggest reservation is that they made server rules where you can only hold a monster for 5 minutes. In a game where feeding tp can be a bad thing, players talking through discord, and a hnm scene where we are camping multiple monsters for hours even when friends are asleep and a call away. It is something I can't get past and spend 1000 hours playing to then have to give up monsters I have claimed. Currently I have been playing the New Embers Adrift mmo and it is the most fun ive had in a game since ffxi.

You speak the truth of it, and I were driven for that kind of endgame content I'd be upset, too. But I don't see myself doing that anytime soon unless there is some kind of event. I'll look into Enbers Adrift never heard of it before. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

The 5 min holding rule is for people intentionally holding a mob to actively manipulate its spawn windows. If you have a group on the way then you are ok to hold it while you gather.

I was there launch day till the day the level cap increased and it killed the game for me. I miss all the friends I made and wonder to myself all the time how they are doing. Modern games have taken away so much of the lows that when something awesome happens it doesn’t carry the same high, it gets boring much quicker. Combined hardship makes for a much more dynamic game in the end.

I was very excited and playing regularly but I have quit and probably won't return because I started seeing shouts from mercenaries and I believe after that starts happening the original ffxi feeling dies.

Merc culture is rampant in modern retail. It breaks my heart. Finding an actual group, much less meeting their ludicrus elite standards is nigh impossible. The only saving grace is that like 90% of the game can still be done by yourself through a nostalgia tour. I say this as someone with multiple ilvl relics/mythics/empys/etc and cracked out gear. Even at that level, you can't escape the merc culture. Breaks my heart. I don't agree with all of the changes Horizon is implementing (if you notice, only zones further from cities had no music, imo it was to make them feel more... well, further from home) but I'm going to give it a shot.

Merc culture has been rampant in XI FOR YEARS. Even before Abyssea, we were mercing things. Selling bahamut staves, selling dynamis gear, selling linbus gear, you name it. People were selling astral floe exp burn parties in kuftal. You are completely biased if you think merc culture is something new. Finding a group is easy. You either get a linkshell (remember 75 era end game? None of it was done via pick up group) Or MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN GROUP. For people thumping for the old days back, you are quite fragile and weak minded. You would never have succeeded back then anyways

They are skating on thin ice when you start changing their product. If SE feels their work is miss represented in any way, Horizon will be shut down. They have already had their hand slapped with promoting their server. I think if Horizon wants to continue, they should stop changing the product and just release things how they were. You seem to fly better under the radar like that.

Pre abyessa was trash. And I was around from day 1. Drk... useless. Do t SE, turn it off, don't blood weapon, turn it off. Stand by, Marco stun..... boring..... use a k club. And for what sky gods, useless armor and gear for drk. Abyessia and more so wotg were great. 99 cap fine. 100 to 119 sure that's an issue. I didn't enjoy Scholar til 80, when I could skill chain magic. My point your limitations bind you. The server will fall.
