Another thing I want to add is that the Jehovah's Witness elders on the Hospital Liaison Committee (HLC) are not adequately trained to give sound medical advice for Jehovah's Witnesses who are receiving needed medical care. Worse, if something goes seriously wrong because they were given the wrong advice from the HLC to refuse blood transfusions, even though they are needed for certain medical conditions, such as sickle cell disease or leukemia, or because of profuse bleeding from severe injuries in bad car wrecks, then the Watchtower Society's could be held liable for malpractice in those needless deaths. Then there is the issue of breaches of confidentiality by the HLC. These are things that the Watchtower Society's Governing Body should think about, too, because of HIPAA rules.

100%. But then again, regular elders do not receive any formal training on how to be compassionate leaders, how to address psychological needs of JW's, how to talk to and question children that have dealt with CSA, etc.. etc...

The jw explanation is that it risks eternal life and resurrection because taking in blood is against God's will (supposedly). Breaking it carries an eternal death sentence because blood is holy. Not saying they are right but that is why people are so rabid about it. If they die, at least they come back when Armageddon comes. At its core, it's a doomsday cult. This is about who would survive it or be returned to life etc. That's the coolaid fed to JWs. that they are willing to die for. If you die, you come back, if you live because you took blood, you're doomed forever. As an ex member, it no longer makes sense but it did when I was in it. I believed this once. I'm glad I don't anymore. The indoctrination is strong as heck and will require people to gladly give up even their lives for this belief..

My mom was high risk when she was pregnant with my sister. The Dr's told her in the event of my sister being premature and needing a blood transfusion they would disregard any no blood directive from anyone and if they refused blood in that circumstances cps would be contacted and myself and my sister could possibly be removed from the home

Thing is, those doctors lied. You are able to refuse any procedure, even if it leads to your death as long as they can't convince a judge that you're crazy enough to not be responsible for your own actions and that bar is higher than you might think. They can't actually just "call CPS unless you accept a blood transfusion" that's not how it works though I have no doubt they threatened that. Doctors are not by law required to tell you the truth any more than police officers are. Doctors just usually do tell the truth so when they lie, people get scared to death. I'm sorry it happened but glad she survived it, but she has grounds to sue the doctor. That kind of abuse of power is just as bad as the abuse JWs inflict on their members. People should be free to make their own informed choices. Even if we don't agree, and wish they would make a different choice. Either we have freedom to make choices or we don't. It doesn't change just because we don't like it. Not even if we're doctors.
