I used to work for a contractor for 1 of the 2 satellite TV providers in 2019. It was in decline then for sure. I had hardly any customers below age 40 even where there was no terrestrial broadband. The over 40s out in the sticks tended to be light internet users & were fine with an $80 TV antenna on a pole.

"Light internet user with an $80 antenna on a pole"; that pretty much describes me, except I live in a vast suburban wasteland. 200mb down and I'm happy. 😁

From the moment Dish and DirecTV emerged in 1995 until about 2005, going to digital satelitte was the ONLY game in town if you wanted to get away from crappy Cable TV. This was back when high speed broadband was NOT yet a thing and Netflix was mailing physical discs out! DirecTV and Dish have had a 3 decade long run. If their time has come, their time has come. It is as simple as that.

Eyes and ears. I have seen fiber laid in every inch in the NE Texas countryside, and people are ditching satellite like crazy. Social media posts are telling about the cheaper and much better service they are getting with fiber. Doesn't sound good for satellite companies.

Launch/operational costs in addition to re-transmission extortion fees make both companies un-sustainable. Both companies independently declare bankruptcy, which the creditors will have no choice but to accept a reduction in debt. In the end, it will be consumers who loose the most with one less alternative, allowing the others to increase consumer prices.

When we had Directv up to two years ago our bill was $230 a month for 3 receivers. It is just not cost effective.

I don’t blame the bond holders considering dish used the debt to buy the wireless spectrum.

I went to streaming last week. I refused to continue paying $250 a month to them. Had they not refused to lower my bill and increase my picture quality I would have stayed with them a while longer. Having several streaming packages that have live TV channels isn't really equivalent though. The convenience of having all of the channels in 1 place and 1 click away is one of the main reasons people still stay with them. Let's face it, it's a royal pain in the butt to have to jump though hoops to watch everything, but I understand it's how it is going to be to be able to save money. Direct TV could have been the leader in streaming, but their greed has blinded them to the reality that people won't continue to pay their exorbitant fees, and HULU and KZbin better wake up and understand this. They both are beginning to price themselves out of business.

Direct TV said several years ago that they were not planing any more satellites. Once the current bunch fail, they will be totally streaming. Years ago, all there was the two satellite companies as well as the local cable company, Today, there are dozens of choices.

Interesting update. We have never subscribed to satellite TV but do have some exposure to Dish's financial problems. For many years we were Republic Wireless cellular customers, a MVNO. The were bought by Boost now called Boost Mobile who in turn are a subsidiary of Dish. The transition was kind of rocky but we are still with them as are our adult kids. It will be interesting to see how things play out over time. Quite frankly I'm surprised satellite TV is so expensive. One would have thought of all the ways to deliver real time TV satellite would be ideal but I guess as with cable it is hard to compete with video-on-demand.

Wow, what "perfect" choices there are if one wants RSN's: a company that might go bankrupt at an undetermined time and another that has a bunch of channels and networks "cut out" due to disputes...yet they are both expensive as h***🤣🤣...of course you could always go back to cable...thank you for the update!😁

Direct TV is owned BY AT&T. Therefore, I would NEVER sign a contract with Direct TV. Better options without a contract. Tired of companies tying consumer arm through contracts.

DirecTV needs to get its act together. It's new 'streaming' offerings are less than impressive. Why can't they offer a true streamlined streaming package with no locals (which many of us can easily get over the air)? I watch maybe 5 or 6 stations on the entire system on a regular basis (TNT, TCM, CNN, MSNBC, YES, and MSG). I only want to pay for the networks that I want to watch. I don't even need CNN since I can get a feed for that via MAX with ads (and can probably get all the TNT and TBS content via Bleacher Sports). I already have access to Gotham Sports for YES and MSG. That leaves the full TCM - which is maddeningly not available via streaming.
