So many of Brennan’s characters make a lot more sense after hearing (in an episode of Game Changer) that even more than being a DM, he wants to be a dad. Bill Seacaster, Gorthalax, Gorgug’s parents, and I mean even Gilear too, they all try so hard to be the best parents possible, it is so heartwarming.

If she didn't use mage hand.. There is actually a method to always get heads or tails, if you practice for a few weeks can get extremely proficient at it in real life, but depending on passive perception and especially after so many tosses would be a rolled perception if betting lol and probably would notice the coin only turns a very specific way with every toss.

I just realized something. They talked about this land being originally that of the halflings and then they were conquered by humans. So the halflings are a colonized and marginalized race. This explains why the halflings were talking about not trusting cops as they are the tools of the oppressors. That is some awesome lore continuity that he just slid in there.

I love that Kristan’s slow lose of faith was definitely not planned they just screwed up the first battle and she ended up dying. Then Brennan now has to pull an interaction with god out of his ass. And couldn’t think of an answer to Ally asking “why do bad things happen to good people?” And now it’s like a major character plot for them. If it WAS planned it’s brilliant, but it’s funnier to me if it wasn’t planned.

@@DustyStarrs Honestly I think that was Ally's plan from the start. I was very surprised when Ally had a super religious character at first and with the exaggerated 2-3 hour long morning prayer in ep1 it really did feel like it was meant more as a comical depiction of Christians. Watching the first few episodes I really couldn't imagine her really playing the hyper religious character. It felt she was planning from the get go to have her question her faith, and she was just looking for any reason to start the journey.

Yeah things like that is what made me really not like Kristen's character as much. Don't get me wrong I really like the whole questioning god arch in general. But I feel like the whole Helio thing leans to heavily into Christian stereotypes that those who don't like them hold as it leads to rather odd moments such as Brennan describing the people as having a weird victim complex despite having their church robbed moments ago. Granted there is nothing wrong with stereotypes they are often a good building block for great characters. But it leads to moments where you have Ally remember she originally was playing this hyper religious figure. This is especially the case when she interjects in a conversation to just throw some one liner about her prayer chain or summer camp. It felt to me that Ally was planning to have Kristen question her faith from the get go but was a bit to eager to jump into that role resulting in a weird pendulum that swayed back and forth rapidly. Perhaps its just me being to harsh due to my personal dislike of "monotheism" characters. But I always found it odd when people want to basically import Christianity into DnD and other similar system given the fact that other gods clearly wield power in those world. Such a thing always fitted really uncleanly into world building for me so I never liked it in my games.
@glowyslime2609
@glowyslime2609 Жыл бұрын
@@applepie4287 I would agree with this in almost any other case, however this game is very clearly supposed to be a big play on ynow, 50's-60's style subcultures and tropes that are going on within this time period, which is the peak of red-scare, satanism fever christian small town America, so while it is very clearly played up for the bit, it's still exactly another part of what this game is, and that is, a, very heavily saturized reflection of a real period of history. So while I agree that the idea of "Every big church has to be christian based" is used way too heavily within fantasy properties, I think that in this specific case, it is among one of the most accurate portrayals they could have gone with.

@@applepie4287 also!!! a very important aspect of kristen's character is ally's experience with religion & the church, and coming to terms with their queer identity while growing up with that culture being so pervasive. the point of kristen's whole character arc is kinda explicitly that she's "leaning heavily into Christian stereotypes that those who don't like them hold"--and the fact that ally is 100% a queer person who has a lot of moral qualms with Christianity and the church as a societal structure should tell you at least that this character is not being made as a 'oh cool Christianity is rad' statement. those things are supposed to make u uncomfortable, hell they even make kristen uncomfortable, the point of her character arc is finding your own spiritual meaning and identity that affirms who you are *despite* being raised and groomed to be Exactly What You Are Not.
@noneschrodinger4354
@noneschrodinger4354 Жыл бұрын
@@applepie4287 also just like,,,,, another aspect that you complain about in your comment is that she's 'like a pendulum' in regards to believing her faith or rejecting it--and wow you must not have grown up in a hyper-religious community, huh? kristen is literally de-programming her brain throughout the entire season, and is supposed to be like a 15 year old kid (who DIED and MET her god face-to-face on her first day of school). like yeah of course its hard for her to just immediately reject and shed all of Helio's teachings and beliefs at once. honestly the pendulum effect you describe is extremely accurate to real-life and what it's like to un-brainwash yourself from a cult: she breaks down parts of her beliefs piece by piece, dismantling the Church that was constructed within her at a young age kernal-by-kernal. She starts with the age old 'why do bad things happen to good people' and moves on to seeing Tracker's family had kicked her out for something beyond her control, and the whole doomsday cult harvestmen arc is really what finally pushes her to fully separate from the church, violently. Also, it's important to mention that this was Ally's first ever time playing D&D or making a D&D character, so the whole 'Monotheistic characters are Bad for D&D' doesn't apply. I remember Brennan mentioning in an interview or a podcast somewhere that when talking to Ally about their character, he encouraged them to use real-life, personal inspiration for the character--so no one was thinking about whether or not it would 'fit' into a d&d campaign (Brennan's just a phenomenal DM so he just made it work & made it work wonderfully). can u tell kristen is one of my fav PCs from fantasy high bc she is

✨Small spoiler warning about the gifts✨ Lou (Fabian) choosing to give gifts to each bad kid is so fucking adorable knowing now that it was him: Fig's guitar pick would match her guitar and is ruby red just like the stone her dad was trapped in Gorgug's axe holder has the emblem of the gift he had offered to Fabian on his first day (before they punched each other) $45 is the exact amount Fabian said he'd give Adaine to go buy clothes in the episode she mentioned she wanted a make over Kristen constantly mentioned not having the right books to do the research she needed Riz's business cards are hand done and Fabian is proficient in calligraphy which makes me believe he did them himself In conclusion, Fabian is the bestest boi

@@raychances6251 Don't go off top your head, go by character intros since that also sets the tone for parental interactions. The players know how they will play characters and develop them ahead of shooting. The DM will facilitate that direction even if it is different from how he envisioned an npc. He did a good job of picking up their que , however, the intros is were you see how he was going to play the npc. That for me is the npc and is very telling. All divergence from there are predictable based on a brief psychological assessment of players and common story telling tropes. DM had very specific first encounters and detailed anecdotal interactions that would be common for viewers to run across in real life. That is why he is one of the best. Someone trained and through experience dealing with each of these themes in real life can spot it easily before divergence. It is up to the viewers to spot or connect to character development. If someone went through similar circumstances emotionally then they are more likely to connect to the way a character is played based on wether or not they dealt with the emotional stress from their past. A lot of viewers who applauded the ill behavior in the pcs towards their parents haven't dealt with that emotional baggage and still view themselves as the victim. Many have not yet had to view those past events through the other side by way of experience. It will come though, even in alternative lifestyles. The comments bare this out. The comments section of any digital publicized media is even better than most psychological surveys. People become more open. That is why ideological debates have exploded on the forum. People are battling out past experience by using the characters and stereotypes to prove their point. The first we see the family the interaction was not what Adaine claimed it to be, it was the opposite. She instigated each of the conflicts in that scene. The player did this to direct the interactions there after in this type of tension. The DM followed over subsequent interactions. The player continued this pattern, instigating rude interactions with other characters and then claiming victim. This by definition is a self-fulfilling prophecy in psychology. It is also a narcissistic personality that often we engage in daily life. Teenagers battle this in development all the time. As having lived a bit us viewers should be able to recognise it easily. The players understood when crafting the characters. In storytelling it is called character flaws or tragic flaws. Every character had them in every story. With society the way it is now, I am not surprised that it has slipped past many viewers. Despite rhetoric of the day, they don't accept pcs as they are and instead insert themselves. They have been taught by society that flaws are desired attributes, that deviance is a virtue, that uncooperative behavior is independent, that the villain is the hero becoming the anti-hero, and that all traditional value systems are oppressive. In this case it ruins the story because the pcs can do no wrong there by limiting the impact of character growth. Again, this is bore out in comments. Some viewers get it and express the messages sent out in the story and are immediately preyed upon by those whom didn't get it. They are labeled oppressive and the conversation devolves into a ideological slug fest. Those that insert themselves into the characters feel their actions need to be defended at all cost, then defending the players at all cost. So now traditional values or anyone that doesn't like the story as much as they do are up for attack. It is classic in-group/ out-group dynamics. Group think means people can't have their own opinions, as we see in the cultural political climate now. It becomes less a story about D&D and more a story of how an audience views society through the lens of media. This is my background so don't be alarmed about how long this is, it is natural for me to be lengthy at times. Forgive grammatical errors as I'm on mobile not PC. Good talk, Lol.

I love how fatherly gorthalax. he was hyped up as a ravenous monster by name and seemingly big plot relevance and ended up being this father figure for the whole group. so far we have fabian's father being a mentor, gorthalax being a parental figure, biz as a sixth man archetype, betty being a kind of rally martyr, and jawbone being a kind of homage to the soft giants. this is such a developed game of DnD where actual preceded details matter to both character growth and story progression. without actual murder hobos too cause its obvious that if the children were to try, it wouldnt end well. so many highschool type dnd games ive played end up with unreal things and just straight minmaxers and stat dumpers which take the story aspect out of the game. as a bard and cleric main, i approve wholly of this wonderful campaign.
