If your dishwasher isn’t washing very well there could be some debris stuck in the sump. Take it apart and check to see if you can find anything down in there or see if the chopper assembly has failed.

WARNING: After removing the clogged chopper/screen, it is possible (easy) to reinstall the cleaned or new chopper assembly wrong. You can even replace it's cover with that tight groove to hold the screen properly in place, so you can't rely on being able to install that cover. The chopper won't work unless you first get the 4-pronged plastic joint to FULLY engage with the motor shaft; sometimes the spring is not enough by itself to force that joint into the engaged position and the motor shaft is then able to rotate inside the plastic joint without actually moving the cutter blades. The dishwasher will then clean the top rack very nicely for awhile, weeks maybe (depending on how you pre-rinse food off dishes), until the screen clogs from all the water continuing to flow against/through it WITHOUT THE CHOPPER BLADES ROTATING ( the top rack will then stop getting water flow again). When installing be sure to fidget with manually turning the chopper blade -- while applying pressure toward the motor shaft to push the joint to a fully seated position on the motor shaft. Here's how to tell if you've accomplished this: 1) see whether the cutter blade sits as flat against the screen as it did before installation (note how flat it sits before installing it). 2) manually turn the cutter blade and feel for resistance of the motor (it turns with some resistance when fully engaged vs relatively free spinning of the blades when it is not). 3) while manually turning the cutter blade a little bit, use a focussed flashlight on the very-hard-to-see-into junction of the plastic joint and the metal shaft to see whether the plastic is turning by itself without the metal shaft rotating (when engaged correctly the plastic joint and metal motor shaft must turn together).

Two hand chopper insert. I hear you brother. I have done mine by rote now. Left side of the appliance with using my left hand thumb and middle finger to hold the grill left index finger on the chopper pivot and right hand to brace

I did the chopper a couple times. Relatively easy except in your 70s the body gets cramped. Problem now is I noticed this last chopper didn't quite go in far enough to engage the motor. About 1/4 inch too short. It's running fine,but I'm sure that it will clog because the chopper probably is not spinning. Love to get your thoughts. It's a kitchenaid

Is it possible that the tines on the motor that mesh up to the chopper are ground away? Do they sell just the coupler on the motor/impeller?

All the dishwashers are so clean. I was able to get everything removed but the chopper cover. My dishwasher is about 10 years old and has a lot of calcified build up and I can’t remove the cover. I’ve tried soaking with CLR and Lime Away separately overnight with no luck. The cover won’t budge. Any suggestions? All the screws have been removed.

I replaced grinder and cleaned all food out. Works great for awhile, but grinder stops back up and stops water flow again. Cleaned out four times now. Any reason food won’t wash out?

We had a Kitchenaid Stainless Steel Tub over 14 years and was told parts were not available and they sold us a new Whirlpool Dishwasher with Plastic Tub, not as hefty as the Kitchenaid!

Thanks for the video on the whirlpool/Kitchenaid/Maytag chopper assembly replacement. I have a question. My chopper assembly plugs up every 2-3 weeks. I've replaced the chopper assembly at least 4 times. It never improves. I get great water pressure after cleaning it, but after about two weeks it's plugged again. The worst is when someone eats broccoli, the little white fibers plug all of the holes with little short white strings. Any ideas? Maytag and Whirlpool told us to stop eating broccoli. Really?

I would scrape off all of the food in the trash or compost bin. Make sure all food debris is off the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. I know the salesman said you can wash dishes with the food on the plate but no matter the dishwasher that is what I would do.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair What do I do if the motor prongs became somewhat stripped and do not fully engage with the chopper gear assembly?? I have to clean this every week. Can motor prongs be replaced? I have replaced the chopper assembly and I do not hear it run during the wash cycle

Drain pump or motor is what comes to mind first. Take the sump apart to see if you have a chopper assembly. You know right away if they are bad if they have debris all over it.

GE is what I recommend. Easy to diagnose when they break. Doesn’t matter what you buy now a days. They will have problems eventually. GE parts are easier on the wallet.

i have replaced my chopper, it was whining the first 2 loads but now it's quiet. It keeps getting clogged up every third load. Not sure what to do now, bad pump?

Did you clear everything from the sump area? What’s it clogging with? Make sure plates are clean of food debris. Also make sure it’s installed correctly. Spin the blade on the chopper and make sure it’s connected to the motor. I have found the motor shaft broken and it won’t spin the chopper. Hope this helps.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair clogs by coated with small mush food. Yeah I cleaned the area around it. Its installed into the other groove and tabs facing right way. I thought maybe water not hot enough. Comes in at only 95f but its 145f mid cycle. Is there a way to test if its spinning?

I have the same issue. It especially happens after someone cleans dishes with parmesan cheese on them or broccoli. Both foods plug up my chopper a lot. I'm looking for a resolution too. Clogs up every 2-3 weeks. Whirlpool says to avoid those foods.

I've got the spring fully compressed by jamming a channel lock between the blade and the mesh screen, but the white teeth are banging into the black shaft no matter which way I have the teeth oriented. So frustrating.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair - I got it! The problem was that the area was halfway underwater and I couldn't see the groove that the screen has to go into. There's a second bit of plastic at the top that looks like the right groove, but it's a red herring that was throwing me off until I used a rag to get rid of the water.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair Try using an open-end wrench over the shaft behind the cutter blade. This will hold the chopper parallel and allow it to drop straight in. You may have to play with your wrenches to find one thick enough; my 11/16 works.

If that is a new chopper assembly and it is doing the same thing than you need a new motor. Only comes with that, I do not believe you can get that by itself

@@alexihnen6325 Alex, I kind of had the same problem. Two of the four black tines on my Maytag MDB7749SBB0 had been decimated, but the remaining two appear to be functioning well enough to spin the chopper - at least for ten months anyway. Today I'm replacing it again with a two-bladed version rather than the four-bladed one. We'll see how long this one lasts.
