I love your take and sharing of experiences in Spain, from an American family point of view, and the mind set of openness. I'm American with ancestry from various places in Spain, including Andalusia, one to two generations ago, depending on which side of my family I'm talking about. So I have all the customs natural to America we're broadly accustomed to, and your views are fascinating, as I can relate to both cultures. It's an amazing thing, thank you for sharing.

. Bureaucracy is nearly always a problem everywhere. And I mean everywhere. What I always say is that be aware that the bureaucracy you are experiencing is as a foreigner, not as a Spaniard. Not that the latter is wonderful but it’s definitely on a different level. You are perhaps comparing your experience with being an American in America. But I can tell you as a foreigner in America the bureaucracy can be dreadful, and sometimes even life changing, or rather life shattering. Depending on one’s circumstances of course. Good luck with your journey

Minuto 3:25 Summertime in southern Spain is ... An inferno. Move to the north which is cooler. Minute 5:27 Parcel companies cant deliver to the neighbour as not all neighbours are trustworthy, and l think such práctice is deemed illegal if l am not mistaken. Gossiping is a national sport especially in rural areas (where there is nothing to talk about ) alongside the siesta. Good 2 see you are fine. Hello, I can't tell you something that you don't already know, but those gestures people make of saying good morning or greeting, and receiving silence or even worse, a snubbed greeting is very common and makes us see the inner poverty of many people, that many times when you get to know them you get a positive surprise, (not always). I am from Galicia and because I live 1000 km from the land where I was born, it also happens to me that I am as Spanish as they are, and as long as you don't go out of fashion which costs a little, you will be the favorite entertainment to talk about anything you do or see or not have done, the important thing is to discover something to fill the morbidity of criticism. It is a ticket that belongs to all of us, although we have not bought it. You already have a new subscriber and I wish you the best... health, happiness, and what else?.... a fan, perhaps?

The burocracy problem is something more or less common in Europe. In France or Germany is also a hell of a thing and i speak by experience. Germany for example is known by having an incredible complex/twisted burocracy where you have to do the same thing even twice. Anyway, i also think that this happens mainly when you begin your activity and need to catch up on your papers. Once it´s done, it runs much smoother. Regarding the package delivering system, it´s something i have never experienced. Maybe it´s because i live in the north of Spain and here some things work different. Here, when your package arrives and you are not at home they leave a notification in your mail box, so you can go with it to the local office and get your stuff. As far as i remember, never happened that a package is delivered to a neighbour and it sounds very weird to me. It´s something i have also experienced in Germany. There that happened to me several times and i also needed to ask the neighbours for my package.

Hi I grew up in Madrid Spain. I Married an American Air Force men. I have lived in the United States for 55 years the USA is my country now I am an American citizen ,I love the USA but I missed some traditions from Spain it is my mother country. I have live in the Seattle area Washington State 50 years. Anytime you're going to live in another country is going to be some culture difficulties I had to learn to adjust some are hard to accept than others. I have been blessed that my husband's family was wonderful welcoming good people from South Dakota small town, but very different culture then Madrid Spain. My husband and I and our family we have travel different States. The Southern United States is very hot Texas, Arizona, New Mexico ,Oklahoma, Alabama etc even some of the north Estates can get very hot in the summer butt most places do have air conditioning. The big cities in Spain they do integrate better people from other countries. My grandmother was from Malaga my grandfather from Cordova my mother's side of the family. My dad and family was from north of Portugal. I hope you can make some friends ,most Spaniards are friendly and social. Small towns people are more set in their ways. You can tell you are a wonderful sweet Christian family. God bless you.❤🌿🌹🌼🌿🌷

I totally get how you might feel about the gossip in small towns-it happens even if you’re from Spain and move to a new village. Hang in there, the best thing to do is just ignore it. Luckily, in bigger cities or places outside of “deep Spain,” this kind of thing doesn’t happen as much. In the end, I think it’s all about weighing the good things about living in a small town against the bad things, which are also because it’s a small town. It also really depends on the part of Spain you’re in-this country is like a mini-continent, with a lot of diversity in landscapes, cultures, and people. Cheers!

I just have to tell you my story listening to yours and I agreed with everything you said. I just going to begin with bureaucracy, it took me 20 months (Usually they did it in two months) to get my green card renewed (A resident of 35 years in California). They sent me a temporary paper to leave the country for three months, they never responded my emails, the never told me why it was taking so long and finally after 20 months I got it. I walked in a park every day for 5 miles and I can honestly say that about 60 to 70 % of the people that I encounter never say hello back to me, some of them they don't even acknowledge me, others pretend not to see me and the third kind they feel obligated to do it and I can sense it. When I took my kids to their baseball practice I always spoke Spanish with them and all the moms and dads of the rest of the team because I was speaking Spanish never crossed a word with me. I was always alone at the dugouts. On the contrary, my wife (Blond American) they all always talked to her (Everybody) and I even could hear on the distance sometimes the famous phrase "We speak English in America". Most of my friends are European like me (Because we have much more in common) and we always say that there is a USA for the American people and there is another USA for us, the foreigners. Other things that shocked me is how many American white men describe African-Americans, women, single women with kids that are described as women with luggage, places where young people meet are described as meat markets, homeless are described as losers and so on (You know what I am talking about) and finally I do have an accent and I am sometimes reminded of my accent and not in a very nice way (Thank God it is not very often) I just count my blessings as a European because English is my fifth language. I tried to live my life in peace with the little tools that I have but you and me have to understand that ignorance is very daring and you are going to encounter it no matter where you go.

I just watched the full video, and I really like you guys. Personally, I think Sevilla is a nice place, but I wouldn't choose to live there or anywhere further south. Instead, I recommend considering Alicante, Valencia, or Barcelona. My wife and I are from Venezuela. I have a German appearance, while my wife and our 11-year-old daughter look Latin. Unfortunately, my daughter has faced some minor issues with classmates making racist remarks. I always tell her not to worry about such comments and to be proud of who she is. I attribute these incidents to the lack of exposure some Spanish people have to diverse cultures, which can lead to ignorance. Despite this, my daughter loves it here. She has many friends, participates in soccer and other sports, and excels in school. We might have to move back to the USA because my wife, being a nurse, can earn significantly more there. If that doesn’t happen, we plan to move from Madrid to Mallorca.

Keep in mind that homes in Spain can be quite different from those in the States. If Seville doesn’t meet your needs, consider exploring charming smaller towns in the Sevilla province. Seville is diverse and has great options like Triana for its lively atmosphere, or Nervión for its family-friendly amenities. Happy house hunting and we hope this helps a little!

For people wanting to come to Spain: The truth is, in terms of accommodations and efficiency Spain is behind the US. America being the richest country in the history of the world and the only formal democracy (the people have a say in politics and hold power), there are many things that cannot be matched by any other country and that you may take for granted. It's hard for me to explain my point since I'm not that fluent in English but anyway. About your struggles to make friends and bad rummors: There are many factors that can cause this: I will exagerate a bit so you can get the idea. Many Spanish people have huge pride and egos as individuals, very strong personalities that show their flaws very strongly, we only care about our friends and familiy, everything else doesn't matter. What other Spanish people or anyone thinks of our actions is irrelevant. This kind of people Spain has more than many countries, now, in small towns, the amount of people that are uneducated (they didn't go to school even, can't write or read, especially older people) living off farming and harvesting their own soils that haven''t even seen a different skin tone and they are only seeing that north african ilegal immigrants are raping and murdering people in the news. Politicians instigating hate and these gruesome daily news doesn't help. This means that you are going to take their hate directly or indirectly without any reason at all, mainly because these kind of people are easier to manipulate. 1. Although Spain is all about social life and fun, you may think that we Spanish people have thousands of friends, the truth is some Spanish people are so good at social life that you can go dinner, hang out, party with anyone, also you have the kind of friends that even if you like each other a lot, you won't stick together and will distance yourself over time because of interests, live choices etc. Then, there are the friends that may be more important than your life, as you consider them your family, this kind of relationship isn't build in a year or two as you know. I think with time you will naturally overcome this problem. Specially if you have a child that is going to school and is making some friends, you will eventually become friends with the kid's parents. There are also some Spanish that don't live social lives at all, they only need their family and partner and aren't thinking of meeting other people. 2. Language and culture. My foreign friends that completely dominated the Spanish language had no trouble making friends and adapting to the country. The fluency in the language and dialect is very big part of the culture and it brings people much closer. It really makes you more interesting if you dominate the language and I mean DOMINATE, good pronunciation is a must, you can perfectly pass as a native spanish just by speaking with no accent, they won't ever know. The main reason someone may "reject" a foreigner is because in Spain comunication is key for everything, they may asume you don't understand the culture very well and that is may not be worth the effort of knowing you. As you know, the Spanish choose extremely carefully where to invest their time and effort because it's very precious for us. In Spain you are friends or partners by choice its not that I have no options therefore I'm your friend (not that there isn't many of those interested people) but that's the prefered mindset of someone with values. 3. Every region of Spain is a bit different , landscapes, cultures and history and may have a "different" way of living since each of these regions used to be their own kingdom. If you want a slow and peaceful life style you may want go to some of the more closed minded traditional small ass town andalusia or north spain where you might find your typical gossipy grumpy neighbour or the most lovely people in the world. You have green landscapes, beaches, mountains and arid regions. In Murcia (where I'm from) you have Spanish men/women "on crack" that justs want to party and bang until they die. Anyway, Spanish people are just very Spanish, we Spanish hate other Spanish people more than anything in the world so don't fret over some retard you find in the street.

I kind of disagree with what you say about the lack of knowledge of other cultures. After all, on top of having many nationalities living here, such as Europeans, north Africans, and Spanish Americans, we have been bombarded by Hollywood with the US culture since we were kids too. Maybe the friction you are noticing is between your family´s cosmopoliteness / urban background vs the more rural world, which happens in each country including the US.
@AG3Family
@AG3Family 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your perspective.🙏🏿❤️We appreciate the diversity of opinions, as everyone's experiences and backgrounds shape their views. While we understand that Spain has a rich tapestry of cultures and nationalities, our point was that the level of acceptance can vary greatly. Even with diverse influences, there are still significant gaps in knowledge and understanding about different cultures, which can lead to a lack of acceptance for some individuals. It's important to recognize that just because various cultures coexist doesn’t mean they are fully embraced or understood. This phenomenon isn’t unique to Spain; many countries face similar challenges, and it’s crucial to address these issues openly to promote a more inclusive environment.
@gdecarlo4178
@gdecarlo4178 3 ай бұрын
Just because many cultures exist there doesnt mean they glue, immerse and coexist. Perfect example is bay area in USA. You've got Asians, Blacks, Whites. Chinese, Ethiopians and Jewish. But Chinese only deal with Chinese and Chinese families. Ethiopians only hang out with other Ethiopians. Jewish only want to do business with Jews. but yeah they all 'Exist' in that area/city. So because Spain has many cultures doesnt mean they live together or even understand each other. USA had many cultures since its inception. But blacks were hung from trees and Asians were put in cages post WW2. Doesnt really mean shit in the big picture.

Va dirigido a todo aquel a quien le interese el tema, especialmente si está pensando en hacer lo mismo. As an Asturian, I understand well about the climate...Well, Spain is not a diverse country, just in the last few years there has been a great immigration. When I was a child, and even when I did my military service, people of color in Spain could be counted on the fingers of one hand, but it is applicable to any other race or nationality. Generally, it is assumed that youth adapt better to these changes, and older people have a harder time adapting to these changes. Children today share classes with children of other nationalities and that is good for them. I went to a school and to a public institute with thousands of students and there was no other nationality that was not Spanish. I tell you this not as an excuse, but so that you understand that the diversity of the USA has been around for many more years than that here and we are still just beginning. People are the same everywhere and the stupid and bad people are spread all over the Earth. Don't worry about it, just avoid those people, a large majority of us Spaniards do it too. Spaniards are still very racist. I'm glad to see that you are staying positive. Being in Europe, as a black person really made me appreciate the US a lot more. I really hope you guy find your peace. The latest waves of immigration have put so much pressure on Europeans that many have been force to stand for their cultural identity. And ethnic background is one of the quickest ways to make differences between Europeans and non Europeans. The whole reconquista and posterior overseas exploration was a response of the Christian/Non Arabic different nations to the Arab invader that lasted 8 centuries. It is a constant in Europe to preserve the cultural identity, it is really ingrained on us.

That's a good point. Until very recently all foreign people in the south of Spain were tourists. You do not put too much effort in developing a friendship with people who are gonna leave in a couple of weeks. We may have gotten too used to just being nice for a short period of time and then forget about the person, and now we just automatically do the same thing with permanent residents. Age is also important. Most friendships are built before that age.
