August in Spain, and in the rest of Europe, means vacations. Free time. Go to the beach, to the mountains, for tourism, to read, practice hobbies... it is strange that in the USA vacations are so short and undervalued .There is only one life, you also have to enjoy it.Regarding card purchases, the banking systems of the European Union and the USA work differently, and the banking entities in Spain work with the coordinates of the European Central Bank, so they may have difficulty accepting payments, I would recommend a bank account in a Spanish entity with associated card.

The worst part about taking short vacations in the U.S is we can't wait to get back to work to make money, which we really don't see after paying the government. There are people like myself who pay over 60 percent in taxes bi-weekly. I wonder what the taxes are like in Spain???
@salozinp
@salozinp 3 ай бұрын
@@sarahlinkhorne6953 In Spain, and in general in Europe, workers receive their salary monthly, from which a percentage is deducted, the greater the more they earn, to maintain the health system, retirement pensions and social expenses. In addition, when purchasing any product, It is taxed with 21% Value Added Tax, which is paid to the State. A tax and personal income declaration is made annually, to pay or receive from the State if more or less has been contributed. The vacations consist of 30 days. natural, paid by the company. Maternity and paternity leave is 16 weeks, paid by the company. Companies pay taxes to the State for economic activity. The proceeds are used in infrastructure, roads, trains, etc.

A way to let foreigners understand why do we come off as rude is that we are BLUNT but we are also FRIENDLY, so being blunt and unfriendly means one thing, but being blunt and friendly just means people talk with joy. They are happy to be happy and try to pass that onto you while speaking. Formalities in Spain are very very very very VERY rare. So, you need to understand that in order to get our lifestyle. We live joyful lives, happy and sociable lives, that influences the language, since most people are not closed off, people are very open so they don’t feel like having to reeeaaally think what they are going to say and how it’s going to come out, everyone assumes that you get that cause it’s just the whole country’s vibe. The key here is 100% tone. So many words in Spanish have different meanings and connotations. Just one word can mean so many things… and when you have nuances like that the key to understand is tone, is it an aggressive and pushing tone? Or is it energetic and fast? Or is it chill and nonchalant? That could 100% be tricky to someone who isn’t familiarized with Spanish, as a language, not even just Spain. You’ll encounter situations like this is Latin America too. And I think it’s very telling, there’s more words for love and friendship in Spanish than in English, and there’s more words for sadness and despair in English than in Spanish. I think that can be very self explanatory when explaining the "vibes" of our language. Ps: at least that’s MY experience, being a natural born Spanish person from Spain that just speaks fluently in English and has a good understanding of how English works, just as a language by itself. I mean, we learn English from a very young age here, people nowadays still have issues with English and at this point and I’m 100% sure it’s not because it’s difficult (cause it’s not) but because people here, don’t get the "english" vibe, we come from Romance languages and English comes from Germanic languages. Lifestyle is so different, so of course the language is as well. I’ve noticed this while growing up and being one of the only ones of my friend group/family/classmates/coworkers that understands and speaks in English fluidly. When I speak and communicate in English I tend to be very analytical and technical, while when I speak Spanish my whole personality changes (or you could say reverses back to) to a waaaay more chill persona, less bothered, more for fun and more relaxed even. And it’s not a definitive trait of people who speak natively that language, but the language we speak does change our POV, and can even help us open up more. I relate to the fact that I’m able to express my emotions better while speaking in Spanish than English. And people do take me more serious when speaking English than Spanish. And that’s a fact I’ve lived through 20 years of being a polyglot hahaha

Not everyone in Spain is the same. If you travel widely, you will notice that there are stark differences among different regions and even provinces, between the north and the south, the east and the west. Even there are regional languages like galician, Valencian, catalán, vasc, etc., with their own identities. Remember than people in Spain work to make enough money to enjoy life with family and friends, and build up some savings. That is a prevailing cultural value, rather than working until you drop. Sometime overtime goes unpaid and/or unrecognised, so there are not incentives to work harder. The business culture is part of the cultural heritage from centuries and decades of absolute monarchies and a few dictatorships in the XX century which lasted until the late 1970s. The last fascist dictatorship (1939 76) left the country in tatters, with no recognisition of basic civil rights like freedom of speech, association, etc. Luckily things started to change when Spain got a Constitution in 1977 (or 1978 if l am not mistaken) and joined the EU in 1985. Only those born before 1970 can recall those days. In 1981 there was a Coup d'état.

@@AG3Family Yeah, l am with you. A feature of some Andalucían people is "desparpajo". A word not easy to translate, which means out-going to the point of over-confident, but without being openly rude, so no wonder it is somehow shocking to foreign nationals. Vasc or galician people have a very different approach. Even here in the East, we are different, but don't dare to criticise paella or Las Fallas. You are allowed to criticise the chef or the city hall mayor though.

I’m from Seattle but I’ve been in Spain for over 10 years… I have the exact same problem when buying things in the USA. It’s like roulette with my payment cards because some are declined without any clear reason. I suppose some payment systems are not compatible with some banks. For example, none of the restaurants in the Newark airport accept my debit card except the Wendy’s. 🤣🤣

I'm from Argentina and I've been living in Spain for over 20 years. My family also had some problems with foreign credit cards, especially when we spent more than 100€ or so. I remember that one time, my mother went to the mall to make the weekly shopping and somehow the credit card didn't allow her to buy more than 20€ or something like that. So, the cashier had to scan a few items and then use the card, then repeat. The cashier did this like 7 or 8 times while my mother stood there with several customers in the queue, waiting for her to finish paying...

Entonces me puedes adornar el idioma con muchos could you like, would you preffer... please, excuse me... da da da... 😢

Spanish is a language where the tone in the sentence might make the sentence have a different meaning. Been to Barcelona twice, 1st time was great , enjoyed my stay but stayed in tourist areas. 2nd time visited with my kids , we explored and drove to a beach outside of Barcelona. A lady was rude and angry that my kids had put some sand on her bag while they were playing. Honestly, it was a very bad interaction as she was so angry and l was baffled at how angry she was as we were surrounded by sand and she also had sand all over her. Although she dd not say any racist comment , my conclusion was she was racist and was not happy to have foreign black kids running around enjoying the Spanish beach. I told her sorry and she kept shouting and my response was she was being ridiculous as sand is everywhere. In the end l ignored her and my kids kept playing. Their holiday was not spoiled by l know l will not be returning to Barcelona again. The Canary Islands are beautiful, we go there a lot, never had a negative experience , but that interaction made me very weary of Spanish people

At what point going inland from the Mediterranean does the temperature get noticeably hotter? I'm looking into moving from TX to Spain so I'm looking at real estate. I have three animals that are part of my family. I see terrace houses but feel my pets would be too confined. I'm looking for a balance in room for them and comfort for me. I'm also on a tight budget so I need to be reasonable in my compromises. LOVE that I stumbled onto your KZbin channel in the wee hours today. I'm also enjoying Joy's blog. I appreciated the post on your son's classmate conflict and your comments on the generational trauma we carry. Frankly, I'm drawn to Spain because they seem to have been through so much (Franco/Civil War) that we're facing here in the USA right now with this bizarre craving many seem to have for an authoritarian government and political division. I just need space, and the great food, the sunny Mediterranean beaches, and a slower pace are the other obvious perks.

One of the reason cause lot of little business closed in August is just because if you live in a city where everyone is on vacation, there's no enough clients to open and be profitable, so you make vacation too. But if you live in a summer tourist place, there will be likely more life, shops opened and people working during that season. A local business usually regrets your credit card because is a foreign account and there's a commission for international exchange. If you have an usa account, you have always to convert your dollars for euros. That has a cost.

He tenido que acostombrarme a eso porque en Irlanda siempre decimos "please, thanks, sorry, what would you like" etc. Spanish temperament is not rude, just direct and honest. They don't say "please & thank you" repeatedly .. especially when in a bar, restaurant or any other place where service is expected. They will usually say thank you once a customer pays the bills and is leaving. In a bar or fast paced (not seating) environment, its common for them to simply say "Dime" (Tell me) or "Que te pongo?" (What can I get you?) because speed is necessary. Same goes for for every day interactions. Don't expect Spaniards to sugar coat things.. but that doesn't mean they're rude.

On this side of the pond, some of the countries to our south are notorious for what seems to be no ordinances/HOA rules or restrictions/controls to curtail barking dogs. Barking dogs in yards, on the streets, on the roof🤔😮 are truly ubiquitous. Would love feedback on dog noises/controls there. Thank you.

However, we can share that we hear our Nieghbor’s loud barking Chihuahua every single day.🤣It doesn’t bother us but others complain. It seems as though there are not very strict sound restrictions with pets BUT we could be wrong and it could depend on the place/community.

Great to hear that you are still living there after 4years. 1- What city or town do you live in, and why did you choose that region over th others? 2- How long was the process of getting the paperwork in order to mover there, and type of paperwork do you need? 3- What job or jobs are you doing over there, and is comparable to US pay? 4- How is the public education for the kids, was it easy finding one? I am highly considering the move, but thinking of Valencia. Finally is $120k enough to support a family of 4 and still do about 2 international travel while living in Spain.
