I say have an outside bathroom. It could be historically inspired with updates for comfort. I would leave the cabin as rustic as possible. It’s such a great example. I’m sure whatever you guys decide will be gorgeous.

This is coming along beautifully ❤ I think the 2nd floor should be open, like a tea room, seating area... Perhaps an library/seating area incorporating some of better pieces of wood. There are beautiful nooks for inspiration on Pinterest that Val would love. I think an old outhouse, maybe a little modernized should be the way to go, as back in the 1800s. Just another suggestion for you guys to ponder.

It’s looking 👀 so great!! I would keep the shell of the house and build the bathroom and kitchen behind since the house would not have been plumbed when it was built!! You could have a luxury bathroom with an outside shower too complementing the outside grounds!! Also skylights would be amazing!! I’ll be your first guest! Hang in there!!

Hi Russ, yep, an external bathroom means greater living spaces inside the old cottage. I note that I’m not the only one worried about your safety, lol :D. Handling that bath was certainly a risky thing, using a snatch block with rope could have made it easier and safer for you, but too late for that now. Re enamel the old tub, it’s worth it. These old buildings need lots of preparation before restoration, little by little you will get there. Enjoying the progress.

Those cast iron tubs are FUN to move! I had to remove one in my first house with a sledge hammer!. It wasn't a claw foot so no real loss. It also threw thousands of razor sharp shards of porcelain everywhere and that was even more fun. Yay.

I sincerely respect your commitment to preserving this cabin even when faced with having to change your approach. So many of these cabins are just wasting away! I’m just a mom who loves pioneer history and cabin building stuff so this may be a silly question but… Since these cabins are usually built with lumber nearby, do you have timber that was used available on your property? It has to cure a bit but if you cut some now it might be ready to use when you are ready to replace the damaged ones.

Are you marking the logs as you disassemble? Nevermind! Lol. You answered me as I was typing this question! Labeling the logs will let you put it back together much faster! Also, as you disassemble, you can take note of which logs are not reusable and take your size measurements and placement from those logs before you burn them. Best wishes! ❤
