@@madisongracedeluise you're short-sighted and superficial. Because they're both timeless pieces of art, and Tangled is just a modern child's entertainment, that's why. PS I LOVE Tangled, but it's nowhere near close to Sleeping Beauty and Bambi. Sorry.

@@noname76141 How? The main character in Sleeping Beauty only had 18 lines? Also, in Tangled the characters are more mature and less child like? I can agree that the animation is more original and creative in Dumbo and Sleeping Beauty, but the stories and characters don’t even compare to Tangled’s characters.
@noname76141
@noname76141 3 жыл бұрын
@@madisongracedeluise that's the point. This guy definitely knew what he did when he put Sleeping Beauty in 7th place. It's a masterpiece, in every aspect and it's my personal favorite since forever, for many many reasons. It has a brilliant story-telling and it's sad some people sleep on it. It's the movie where "lead" character falls into coma in the middle of the movie, and "side" characters and animation speak for themselves. That's not easy to make, and they made it brilliantly. Have you seen Hitchcock's Psycho? The lead character is killed in the beginning, the rest of the movie is brutally good! Same goes with this one. That's some good film-making. For me personally, Maleficent (as a character) alone overshadows Tangled by miles. I don't think in Tangled are characters less child-like, absolutely opposite. I would never compare these two, because I love both, they are from two different eras, they are made differently, they feel differently... And come on, Sleeping Beauty is made by Walt Disney himself. When it comes to Disney, I love and appreciate movies HE MADE. That's just my opinion! :) Tangled is my favourite 3d animated movie, so in the conclusion, it would be pretty high on my list too, but Sleeping Beauty is something untouchable

But the thing is, I’m ranking Disney movies against Disney movies. I’m ranking them AS Disney movies and nothing else, so there’s a list of core fundamentals that need to be covered and assessed. It’s great to take risks, and most of these movies do that - though there’s a way to do that while still staying within the realms of what makes something so inherently “Disney.” In my _personal opinon_ Ralph did not do that

I respectfully disagree with the spot “Fox and the Hound” got. I feel that just because the animation wasn’t spot on doesn’t mean it is flawed. The story and character development wasn’t awkward or feel like it was forced, unlike many cliche disney movies. It knew when to make the audience cry, or to feel joy. I watched the original “Fantasia” for the first time in 2014 (at 27) and was simply _blown away_ by the pure artistry of 1940 Disney. The movie is a grandiose experiment in showing the world what animation is capable of, blending all Disney had done before and cranking everything to a new level. It’s beautiful, sweeping, terrifying, hilarious, soothing, ferocious. It’s true cinematic art. Even though not paleontologically correct anymore, the “Rite of Spring” segment (with the dinosaurs) is still good. It’s an example of how animated realism could be achieved. Walt Disney’s mandate for the segment was not to anthropomorphize the dinosaurs, not to make them cute. Yet, they still manage to be expressive with great subtlety. This only underscores how a simple cartoon producer managed to do realism far better, with a prehistoric 2D animation, than a world-renowned moviemaker with all the latest and the best of CGI and VR moviemaking (I’m looking at you, Jon Favreau). Since this work, there has never been a better piece of dinosaur media on film.¹ I could go on forever about “Fantasia”; it’s really one of my favorite things made by Disney.² While not perfect, the movie is a masterpiece in my eyes.³ I urge any art fans to buy this incredibly-important, criminally-underseen piece of work, if only for the art.⁴ ___________________________________ ¹: What I like the most about the dinosaur sequence is that, due to a flub in knowledge, the Tyrannosaurus Rex had three fingers and fought a Stegosaurus (which is more impossible than a T. Rex encountering a human). Retroactively, this makes it an Allosaurus fighting a Stegosaurus, thus correct. ²: I still can’t believe this movie’s animated effects work so well for being 80 years ago. The lava and volcano scenes just really stuck out to me for so long. I think we, as a culture, have taken Disney animation for granted, but Walt Disney was definitely the Medici of the 20th century. At least as visual arts go. ³: I won’t lie, “Fantasia” has its longueurs-I’ve never cared much for the pastoral section-but at its best, it’s one of the impactful movies ever made. ⁴: I can’t imagine, though, how this project was green-lit in 1940. Even specifying (via the introductions to each segment, often cut) that the demon is Satan, and that the “Rite of Spring” segment is based on scientific fact-must have annoyed the ultra-Christian groups? *Update:* Edited because my “U” key is sticking!

"There has never been a better piece of dinosaur media on film" *Jurassic Park and Land Before Time have entered the chat*
@Geblawi
@Geblawi 3 жыл бұрын
The Enchiladdy - Haha! 😄 More like they have left the chat. The first “Jurassic Park” will always remain the best one in the series’ three-movie franchise. It’s a classic, and I love that the whole movie isn’t CGI. The others weren’t bad; they just didn’t captivate me like the authenticity of the original. That being said, “Rite of Spring” still takes the cake, for me. The art design of that particular segment was really stylish, with angular, almost industrial shapes for the dinos. Even in a post-“Jurassic” world, they hold up pretty well. 1988’s “Land Before Time” is a decent picture, too, but not as good as everyone has been saying, in my opinion. “Rite of Spring”-which came out 47 years earlier-had better animation, and it did dinosaurs better, overall. (Tyrannosaurus Rex vs. Stegosaurus is still one of the most underrated epic battles in animated movie. Steggy’s wild, terrified eyes, tail aloft, as he fruitlessly tries to fight off the T-Rex is the most horrifying sight. Just blind animal fear.) I won’t comment, though, on the 13 direct-to-video sequels and the short-lived TV series, as they exist only to pay the studio’s bills. (Funny thing is, both of these properties are owned by Universal.)

MavericKay are you joking? That movie is completely mean spirited, with annoying, rude and brash characters, and a bad message. Little Chickens voice actor did not suit him at all either. I get that it’s your opinion, but if you look at it critically it’s a mess to get through. At first I didn’t even think it was DISNEY that was making it.

My favorites of each era. Golden Age: Fantasia. Unbeatable to in terms of how large of a spectacle it is. Defines "Disney Magic". Silver Age: Peter Pan. The second "boy's adventure" film and is very exciting. Has my favorite Disney villain. Dark Age: Winnie the Pooh. I enjoy the simplicity of it. It's truly important for everything it is. Renaissance Era: Aladdin. While Hunchback is a personal favorite of mine, Aladdin has a better story, amazing animation, and a larger heart. Post-Renaissance Era: The Emperor's New Groove. This film has one of the most iconic senses of humor any other Disney film has. Revival Era: Tangled. It was originally Big Hero 6. But I have a much greater appreciation for this film from its concept art to it's animation and story. And I think it has my favorite love story of all the Disney films.

I audibly gasped when Treasure Planet came up so early. But I appreciate that Lilo & Stitch and Bambi are so high on the list. I feel like many people miss the nuance in those. In rankings of Disney films it becomes difficult to balance the artistry of the form versus the writing of the narrative. Although I ultimately agree with your number one. Taken as a whole, Fantasia's sequences were the only time Disney entirely embraced an amoral universe.

Good list, though personally, I like "Treasure Planet" and "Oliver & Company", "Meet the Robinsons" and a few others higher than yourself, I think. But I'd find it really hard to rank the movies overall as a lot of the Disney movies have a solid to great quality through the board. Can definitely see why "Chicken Little" is nearly the worst. I hate most of the characters in that one. XD One of my personal favorites is possibly "Aladdin". Always love coming back to it. Probably my typical joy for the Arabian Nights theme , the songs, humor, all simply my jam.

Believe it or not, I sought out Saludos Amigos when I got Disney+ just to see the bit with the paintbrush near the end. A bit of blue brings a waterfall to life, a palm tree becomes a bird, a splash of black turns bananas to toucans...it's really gorgeous and it's not as trippy as it sounds, whether that's good or bad. I think you're being a bit hard on the Fantasia attempts of the package era, but it's your opinion. Would you like them more if they weren't all crammed together and you saw them separately? In other words, are some of the shorts worth watching on their own? I've heard good things about The Whale That Wanted To Sing At The Met and Johnny Appleseed.

Golden age: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Haven't seen anything from the wartime era) Silver age: Sleeping Beauty (Only seen two movies from Bronze Age so wouldn't be fair) Renaissance: Beauty and the Beast Post Renaissance: Emperor's New Groove Revival era: Tangled or Zootopia When Disney+ comes to my country I'll watch the ones I haven't seen (and rewatch those I have forgotten most of) so I can update my list and maybe make a ranking like the one in the video :)

@Dave Lee Down Under I realize it is my man and I’m sorry, but would you want to sit and listen to someone bad moth a movie that you loved? I’m just saying I could not personally handle it. Cheers all the same and keep up the good work.

Not sure I'm 'bad mouthing' the movies. To be clear - I love all of these films, except maybe the bottom two. But naturally, I love more than others, and some films simply _have to_ come low on the list. I also only have 10-15 seconds to get an opinion across and justify it. Not an easy task. But all good - thanks for the support.

This is a very good video list Dave! Must have taken you a lot of work! As for me, my all time top 3 films are Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. Era wise, I think I’d rank them like this: Golden Era: Pinocchio, Bambi, Snow White. Package Era: Fun and Fancy Free, Ichabod and Mr. Toad, The Three Caballeros. Silver Era: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland. Bronze/Dark Era: The Rescuers, The Great Mouse Detective, The Fox and The Hound. Renaissance Era: The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Post-Reinassance Era: The Emperor’s New Groove, Meet the Robinson’s, Home on the Range (I know, I’m weird). Revival Era: Zootopia, Tangled, Moana.

I always revisit Fantasia! I don’t think it stands out to many people anymore, but it truly changed me growing up, and I still rewatch it to this day. Is it perfect? No. But it helped me form a bond with classical music, and it will always be special to me because of that.

it is the default music video for the classic pieces for me. why listen to waltz of the flowers without the fantasia short? it improves the music. gives you something to gaze at while the music takes you away. all the great classical pieces should have fantasia style top quality videos done for them too.

Hunchback of Notre Dame not even in the top 20? that's honestly surprising. Personally, it's my favorite disney movie, but I respect your opinion.

Some of the comments are being so rude when it is just his opinion. Proof humans have no respect and it’s so weird and embarrassing when they get mad at people for OPINIONS. Be a good respectful person and respect someone’s opinion when they dislike something you like or like something you dislike. People can like and dislike whatever they want and not everyone has to agree with them, just respect their opinion. So stop being so rude to him in the comments. I LOVE the fox and the hound so much and I love brother bear and I’m not even mad or rude at all that he ranked them so low so why are some people so angry over his opinion? It’s easy to not be angry over someone’s opinion and to be a good person. Who cares if someone doesn’t like something you like. Just like what you wanna like and don’t let others opinions affect you (you as in towards the people in the comments/anyone who gets angry at people’s opinions)

Tbh, it’s gonna take some time for me to finally figure out my own ranking. But one thing is for sure, the Golden Age/early 1940s WDAS films (Dumbo, Fantasia, Bambi and Pinocchio, the Disney Renaissance films (Mulan, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and The Rescuers Down Under), the early Revival Era films and The Emperor’s New Groove are closest to the top of the list and the WDAS films made between Brother Bear and Meet the Robinsons could be at the bottom of the list.

There's one thing that I don't understand. Why did you put Frozen 2 and a few other second titels in this list but not all of them?
@DaveLeeDownUnder
@DaveLeeDownUnder 3 жыл бұрын
Frozen 2, Three Caballeros, Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000 and Ralph Breaks the Internet are the only sequels made by Walt Disney Animation and considered part of the “Classics Canon” of (currently) 58 films. The other sequels were made by DisneyToon Studios and are not considered part of the “Classics Canon”

The Great Mouse Detective is my favorite Disney film. I do find it kind of odd that it gets nothing but praise but is put very low on the list (along with some others) but I do agree with some of the placements such as the last movies. To me both of those movies were horrible movies that really shouldn't have been taken off the drawing board. As for the more to the top of the list some of them I agree with as well since they are really good movie & can see why they're on the top of the list
