We have spent months mastering the fine art (and navigating the headache-inducing frustrations) of Disney Genie Plus and we have come up with 27 little tidbits of knowledge will help make your next trip to Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and/or Animal Kingdom your best trip ever (although we don't think you'll really even need the Genie for those last two...)
This is essentially our "Disney Genie Plus for Dummies" video - except it's way more fun than a "for Dummies" book and - most importantly - we don't think you're a dummy. The fact that you are figuring all this stuff out before your Disney World trip makes you pretty darned smart, actually!

@@skyeblue5669 Hello! Yes, most rides are accessible and you can also use a system called DAS (Disability Access Services) that allows you to bypass the normal line for many attractions. It works differently than Genie, but you can also choose to use it in addition to Genie. Amaxing video!!!! But I have three questions!!!! 1. After you get the two you choose in the morning, should you edit you choices?!? Or are they going to appear after you went on them?!? 2. Can you choose different GG for different people in the party?? 3. How do you refresh???

Hi Laura! These are great questions. 1. We have changed our recommendation for booking the first Lightning Lane of the day because Disney now hides the return time until you click through (though they only do this for the first 15-20 minutes). Because of this, we recommend just picking one ride in the am and grabbing it right at 7am on the dot. You should probably just take what you get because it will almost certainly only get worse if you tap out and try to grab something different. Again, this only applies to the first booking right at 7am. 2. You can choose to only include certain members of your party when you book a Lightning Lane and then you are free to book something different for those folks. You can also just book the Lightning Lane for everyone (which is faster and makes it less likely that you would lose a competitive return time) and then tap the cancel button in the reservation to remove the people who want to ride something else. 3. You just swipe down the screen of your phone and it will refresh. Thanks for watching! 😃

I know most Genie+ tips and watched to prepare for my upcoming trip. Was nodding along to the park hopping tip, yep got that one. Then you used your bonus lightning lane on a random ride with no reservation-- wait, WHAT?! I thought the bonus pass for a ride going down was for the same ride later in the day! Now that is the tip of the video. You could just walk on whatever ride has the longest wait time!

One important note on that is that there are a few rides that don’t allow bonus Lightning Lane redemptions. When you get a bonus, it will show the list of rides that it can be used on. There are not many that are excluded, but there are a few.

Came here to rewatch over and over again coz it's probably THE BEST genie+ explanation on youtube (yea I've watched a lot of them) and you're so entertaining to watch. Lovee that you've also included the screen recording of the Genie+ itself while explaining how and what's going on. We're going to WDW in a few weeks for the first time, hence zero Genie+ experience and will try to implement all your tips and tricks! I love park-hopping, so I think a series all about the ups and downs of park hopping would be a great idea. I'm adding it to the list! For this video, I drove to the other park. The reason for that was that I expected I would stay at Magic Kingdom until 11pm and the buses back to Hollywood Studio to get my car would have been very infrequent at that time (and I knew I was going to be worn out 😂). That said, I usually prefer taking a bus to Magic Kingdom because it allows you to skip the Transportation and Ticket Center - you get dropped off right at the park. If you are in a hurry to get there, that is often the way to go.

Aww - thanks so much. 😊 I would say this day was about average. It was a Saturday, but not in peak season. It is ALWAYS worth it to play the slots, no matter how busy it gets, but you’ll just need to play a little less aggressively. Aim for return times that are an hour out rather than 30 minutes out. It’s a lot like playing a real slot machine. If you’re on a winning streak, keep at it. If you are coming up empty, take what you can get later in the day and see how things go after the two hours pass. Good luck! 🍀🧞‍♂️🎰

Wow - that’s a great question. One option is get in a line for a ride that either doesn’t offer a Genie Plus Lightning Lane (Astro Orbiter or PeopleMover, for example) or for a ride that you don’t mind waiting in the regular queue for (Dumbo is good because it has a play area for kids) and use that time that you are in line to play the slots. If they have mobile devices, you could download the Play Disney app which would keep them focused on something related to the parks while you book rides. Good luck!

The short answer is that you will see the exact same return times that we do whether you are a party of 1 or a party of 12. Hi Carolyn! We are actually about to remake this video because there are a few things that are out of date, but I definitely recommend the slots over stacking in most cases. Stacking is great if you want to do something else while you book rides for later in the day (like see shows, go to a water park, shop, eat, etc), but if your goal is to ride as many rides as you can with Genie Plus, playing the Slots is a much better approach. You should always aim for times that are as close as possible to the time you book them and as soon as you tap in, you can book another. In many cases, it is possible to ride multiple rides in the two hours you would wait to book a second one using stacking. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

First off, thanks so much for watching our videos! If you want to practice with the edit selections feature, you need to activate the regular Genie (which is free). If it doesn’t allow you to activate it, select a day in the future where you have a park pass reservation (it asks you the date when you set it up). That should allow you to edit your selections. Hi Matt! Genie Plus is definitely optional. Lots of people prefer to just wait in the standby queue rather than use the Genie. That said, if you want to make the most of Genie, it helps a lot to grab the first Lightning Lane when they become available at 7am. No need to be up at 5:45, but 6:45 gives you a good start. One person can book for the entire group - up to twelve. You certainly don’t need to start that early, you’ll still get lots of Lightning Lanes if you use the other tips in this video. Hope you have a great trip whichever option you go with.

Hi Sylvia - you don’t have to do anything to set it up. On your tip board view at the top, there is a link to change parks. Just pick your new park and you’re all set. The only downside is you can no longer “edit selections” in your second park to bring your selected rides to the top of the list. Thanks for watching! 😃

this is a random question but back in 2008 (my last time at Disney), there was Writer's Spot/Corner. This was at the end of the ABC Corridor kinda near the Dirve In restaurant. is that Coffee/pastry (they sold HUGE muffins for like under $4/merch store still there or is there an equivalent place to go to in Hollywood Studios?

Hello! Sadly, the Writer’s Stop closed several years ago. Your best bet for muffins in Hollywood Studios is either Trolley Car Cafe (which is basically Starbucks) or Joffrey’s. We also sometimes see random baked goods like muffins and cookies at some of the popcorn carts. One of our favorite oversized baked treats in that park is the Jack-Jack Num Num Cookie at The Market next to Joffrey’s. It’s basically a warm giant chocolate chip cookie that’s super thick. They’re the best in the morning or whenever they add a fresh batch. Sometimes they are a bit dried out if you grab one toward the end of the night.

Sorry we missed this question, but wanted to give you an answer in case you still need help or others have a similar question. You can buy Genie Plus at 7am. When you set up the free Genie Service (Main Menu > My Disney Genie Day > Get Started Now) it will ask you to select your party. These will be the default members included in Genie Plus reservations that you make. If someone doesn’t wish to ride, just click cancel on the reservation and it will let you choose who you wish to cancel for. You could technically alter those you are booking for at the time of booking each reservation, but it is not advisable because Lightning Lanes go quickly and you’ll likely get a later time.

Hi Nicole! Yes, I’m pretty sure you’ll only see edit selections when you are actively using Genie because the Tip Board will always only show the current day. If you don’t see Edit Selections, it usually means you haven’t set up the regular “free” Genie service. Just go to Main Menu > My Disney Genie Day > Get Started button. Hi Michelle. I think you are referring to stacking where you book an attraction every two hours until you have a “stack” of them later in the day. I only recommend this if you’re not going to be riding rides in the park in the morning. If you are, you’re better off playing the slots because you can get a lot more done. Especially with the new Modify feature we showed off in recent videos. You can typically get a few rides done every two hours with the slots, where you’d only have 1 with stacking. Even better, they could switch to how they do it at Disneyland where you can't book your first Lightning Lane until you enter the park. Hi Samuel! This is a common misconception because Disney put out info on Disney Genie Plus that said you should “expect” to book 2-3 Lightning Lanes per day. They did this because if you don’t know how to work the system effectively, it is very possible that is all you would be able to get and they were getting lots of complaints about how poorly the system worked. The only limit on how many you can book is how much time you have to book them. You can usually ride every ride in a park that has a Lighting Lane if you use the strategies we show in these videos and (most importantly) have patience when you are “playing the Genie Slots” as we call it. Hello! You pay for Genie Plus when you set it up. We don’t show that part because it is fairly straightforward, but we do recommend starting the process at least 10-15 minutes before 7am in case you run into any issues with your card. The soonest you can pay is midnight on the day of your visit. You can also add a payment method in the app in advance if you prefer to have that set up and ready to go. I love this video! So much great information! I have a question though. If i booked a lightning lane at 7am for a 9am or 10am return time, does that mean I can't maximize 120 min rule until I use my first booking? And does this mean that for us to maximize the 120 min rule, our first booking should be past 11am?

Great question. I only try to use the 120 minute rule if I am planning a break for lunch, shows or going back to the hotel - or if it is my only option for getting the ride I want. Otherwise, you will pack more rides in by trying to get a time as close as possible to the current time and trying to book the next ride as soon as you have tapped into that line. You don’t have to wait 120 minutes to book your next ride - once you tap in at the line for your current ride, you are all set to book the next one. Note that a few rides make you tap in twice - once when you enter and once right before you board. For those rides, it won’t consider you tapped in until the second tap. Please let me know if any of that doesn’t make sense. It’s a somewhat convoluted and confusing system. 😂

Sadly, you have to cancel first and then hope you can still grab the one you want. We REALLY wish Disney would change this so that you could cancel as part of the process of booking the new time you want, but that is not possible currently.

Thank you - and great question! I would suggest booking the ride for both of you, then canceling your reservation. You could go in and remove yourself when you make the reservation, but this takes time and you might lose the time slot you were trying to book if it takes you too long. If you don’t remove yourself, you could also just badge in and not ride, but be aware that some rides have multiple tap points and you might need to give your daughter your magic band or park ticket so she can potentially tap you in at the second one. Hi Luiza! You can’t use the full functionality of the tip board (including editing selections) until the day of your visit. You used to be able to, but they changed this so that you can only view the current day in the tip board view. Hi Nick - thank YOU so much for watching! Are you staying at a hotel that gets you early entry to the parks? If so, I’d recommend arriving as early as possible so you can do Rise of the Resistance before regular park opening. At 7am, I’d recommend grabbing the first Lightning Lane of the day for Slinky Dog Dash or Tower of Terror. I’d also recommend paying for an Individual Attraction Lightning Lane for Guardians at Epcot, just make sure you book it late enough in the day that you can safely get there. That’s the only way you will be able to ride that one because there is no standby queue and you won’t be in the park in time to get a virtual boarding group. We did a video all about using Genie Plus in Hollywood Studios that will come out in the morning - that should help you get an idea of what to prioritize there. For Epcot, there are only 3 rides I would classify as thrill rides: Guardians, Test Track and Mission Space. Test Track will be tough to book late in the day, but you can do it with a lot of patience. Mission Space is much easier to book. Hope that helps!

@@EarScouts no worries! I actually did get Smugglers first thing at 7am so we did that at around 9am after some annoying park entry stuff haha. After playing the genie slots I got us an 11:45 rock n roller coaster so we did the standby line for Toy Story and rode that in the meantime. Rock n Rollercoaster broke down so with our free to use Lightning Lane we ended up getting to ride Mickie and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad, then went to Star Tours lightning lane, and then bought the lightning lane for Rock N Rollercoaster, so that breakdown ended up actually getting us 3 rides for the price of 1! After those 5 rides we park hopped to Epcot at 2pm and just rode Spaceship Earth and appreciated the Boozy options at all the countries haha. Thanks again for all the tips, we definitely maximized our one day trip!

I know you can still book Genie Plus in advance for Disneyland and it is not limited like it is here, so I’m assuming it might not be quite as competitive out there. Hi Joanna - you can sort of skip the line with DAS, but it works differently. With DAS, you can book one ride at a time and you are allowed to enter the Lightning Lane after the posted wait time has passed. So if you book a ride at 1pm and the posted wait is 1 hour, you can enter the Lightning Lane at 2pm. Some people choose to use both Genie Plus and DAS so they can have twice as many reservations at once. I wouldn’t say that you NEED both, and it is easy enough to add Genie later in the day if you decide you need it. Hope you have a great trip! 😃

This video helped our family have such a great Disney vacation! The most helpful tip was the “slot machine”. While at Epcot (park hopper) I missed all Genie+ availability for Frozen and Remy. I just populated both as my desired rides and kept spinning the slot machine. Got both with about 10 minutes of effort. Same thing happened at Magic Kingdom. Thanks for watching! There has never been a limit on Genie Plus Lightning Lane reservations. Before Genie Plus, there was a system called FastPass+ that allowed you to start with 3 reservations, but you could also add rides one at a time with FastPass after you completed your first three. With FastPass, the reservations were tied to the number of people in your party, which definitely did make it harder for larger groups. Luckily for your group, Genie Plus is designed differently. If a reservation is available, it is available to all parties, whether they are one or ten. Hope that helps answer your questions and that you all have a great trip!

Simply FANTASMIC!! Hands-down the best and most fun way to understand and use DG+. Thank you Rob and Eric for putting this together as it made navigating the parks on our recent trip as fun as possible. DG+ slots works and we scored LL when there were 'none' available. There were only a few times that we had to have time-fillers that were unplanned. All the other times we literally were going from ride-to-ride and getting on through LL with minimal wait. We do miss the previous iteration where we could book 90 (or was it 60?) days out before arriving on-property. But who knows if that feature will ever come back. Worst is that we have to use mobile devices instead of un-plugging.

As for your questions, all attractions that offer the ability to bypass the regular line call them “Lightning Lanes.” The only difference is that a few Lightning Lanes have to be paid for individually and are not part of Genie Plus (currently these are 7 Dwarfs Mjne Train, Rise of the Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy and Flight of Passage). For all the others, your Genie Plus charge of $15 per person per day covers access to all the Lightning Lanes you can book and no additional payment is required. As for splitting your party: let’s say everyone is able to book a Lightning Lane. If half of your group chooses to book Space Mountain and the other half wants to ride something else, they can book a different ride instead. Keep in mind that in order for everyone to ride the next ride together, they will all have to have used their Lightning Lane or waited two hours, so it is best to try to book different reservations with similar times to get everybody back together on the next ride. @@EarScouts I wanted to share a thing I discovered with Genie+. I wanted to practice "playing the Disney slots" even though were not going officially until Sept (so I can't do the Edit Selections). I had the Tip Board open and if I for example click on title for Remy's (the click that shows the ride description, not the LL) it opens another page with info on Remy's. If I scroll down on the ride description page, you will see a big "LL" Lightning Lane symbol. If I click on the "LL" it takes me back to the Tip Board, but centered on Remy's. If I then scroll all the way to the top of the Tip Board and pull down to refresh, It refreshes and then it automatically brings me back to being centered on Remy's. I was able to do this for a few minutes one day in the afternoon and sure enough, boom some Genie+ time slots showed up.

Luckily, it seems like we don’t need to buy the night before. This past weekend was pretty busy and Genie did not sell out. Seems like you’re good to just buy it first thing in the morning. As for whether Genie Plus is a cash grab, yeah - it definitely seems that way.

I love how well you explain the tool and the strategy, I can 100% understand how to "play the game". The thing is I do NOT want to "waste" my day scrolling on my phone while in the parks :/ I am assuming there's no solution for that?

Hi Justin - thank you! We definitely agree that it’s not fun to be staring at a phone screen when you’re at Disney World. You could choose to be less picky than we are with return times and just take the best option after a couple refreshes, but this will reduce the number of Lightning Lanes you’ll be able to book. Of course, that might be better than feeling frustrated with your phone all day. Another option is to limit your scrolling to time that you are actually spending physically waiting in line. With the exception of rides with amazing queues or cool pre-shows, there’s not a lot else to do in line. Another option is to see if maybe someone else in your party is happy to be the Genie Slots master. I can’t say that I “enjoy” scrolling my phone all day, but there is a weird competitive side in me that really enjoys snagging seemingly impossible Lightning Lanes, so maybe there is someone like that in your Disney crew? You will have tons of fun at Disney World even without Genie - or with just using it more casually to skip a few key lines. Let us know how it goes!

Just came back here to thank you once more for this video! It helped me SO much on my trip. Thinking of it as a slot machine helped me keep it fun and not get too frustrated! Getting up early was the hardest part. Third week in may so it was not the busiest time. Curious how summer will go! Nothing worse than then having a ride pop up and you click on it only lose to someone else! I wanted.

When you make a Genie Plus Lightning Lane reservation, it will include a return time window of 1 hour. You can see the return time that is available before you book it and it is often hours away from the current time. Typically, it is your goal to get a return time that is as close as possible to the current time so you can use it right away and book the next one. Does that answer your question? This is very helpful! Do you still recommend folks spin the Genie slots if they are at a park on the weekend during a busy time or should they try to grab whatever they see first? I believe you could grab what you see first - but then you'd have to cancel that reservation to try the slots, is that right?

Hi Monica! Yes - unfortunately you do have to cancel your existing reservation if you want to try for a different one (unless, of course, two hours have passed). I always recommend playing the slots, you just might have to settle for slightly longer return times when things are really busy. If it’s crazy busy, I’ll usually settle for a return time of 1.5 hours or less. If I play for 15 minutes and can’t get it, I just settle for what I can get or pick a different ride and try again later. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 😃

We have a large group (10 people) going this week. If I book a Genie+ time, does that allow me to bring all the people in my group? What if my group spilts up for bit and only a few of us want to go on a ride? If someone else in my group books a Genie+ ride and I don't want to go with them but I want to book my own Genie+ ride how does that work?

Hello! As long as everyone is linked together in My Disney Experience and has paid for Genie Plus, you can include or exclude whoever you’d like when making Lightning Lane reservations. You can also remove people from an existing Lightning Lane reservation and this would be our recommendation. Include everyone by default so you don’t have to make changes and risk losing the time slot you’re trying to snag. Once it is booked, you can remove whoever you wish and they are then free to book something else.
