Disney has had many issues over the last few years, with Disney+ being one of the main driving forces for this. Losing billions of dollars, millions of subscribers and requiring a constant deluge of content like Willow and She-Hulk to keep the service going, it's not an easy task.
Bob Iger has sat as the CEO of Disney throughout most of this, and as the WGA strike continues and Disney gets a lawsuit over cost shifting within the company. Can Disney+ continue as a successful platform for Star Wars, Marvel MCU content and many other IP's? Were Peter Pan and Wendy & the Little Mermaid a mistake?

Disney has been struggling with keeping subscribers on Disney+ months now. While making Disney+ streaming service profitable has been even more of a challenge. But with the WGA writers strike standing in the way of modern innovations such as AI, while asking for other workplace changes to help bake in previous issues on shows to future productions. How long can Bob Iger continue down this path without radical change within the Disney company. As Disney get sued by investors over "cost shifting" for Disney+ and they start dumping Marvel MCU shows all on one day for the first time ever. Seemingly to hide the show and minimise the attention it will receive. After losing 4 million subscribers in a single quarter, can Bob Iger turn Disney around? Does he have what it takes to even WANT to make the necessary changes to make it a success? Or is it time for change? Let me know your thoughts down below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

These people don't have the same hang-ups that writers in Hollywood believe they do, or at least not to the same degree. Nobody talks about these new movies; nobody could shut up about End Game. It wasn't that long ago writers still cared. Going back further, Starship Troopers is one of the wokest movies I've ever seen, but nobody cares because the story is pretty good. I won't lie. I guess what I'm getting at is what changed to cause writers to flip the script and make it about the message over the story?

@jamespfp

I think you've missed the mark by focusing on the writing room and presuming that the writers inside it have to be blamed. As I see it, it's Committees involving production executives who are actually at fault, and for sure they can find writers who will attempt to back their proverbial plays when it comes to the Woke narrative agendas. Let me put this another way: the fanatical agenda pushers aren't writers, in the same way that political "leaders" don't always write (or even edit) their own speeches. This ought to absolve the writers (somewhat) for the fanatical aspects of it; for most of them, it's just a regular jerb to pay for that Hollyweird home.

My degree is in screenwriting and I took part in the WGA strike in 1988. I only interviewed with a producer once and the first and only question he asked me was, "What does your father do?" I did not get it at the time, but he was checking if I was connected. I had an opportunity to apply for an internship through the WGA, but coming from a lower middle-class family, I could not afford to work with no pay for a year. That was pretty much the end of that career choice. My point is, these tick-box writers may be from a protected group, but they are not from poor backgrounds and they were already connected to get the job. This is a class issue and being a writer used to be a working class profession but over the past forty years it became an elitist one.

More writers are only going to screw it up more. Some of the best comedy was only written by two writers eg. Fawlty Towers and the Blackadder series. Frasier had 6-8 and they said it was necessary because of Frasier and Niles' highly sophisticated interests like opera and wine tasting and obscure luxury products. The whole group of writers contributing their bit of info were able to write believable dialogue for 2 knowledgeable snobs. 😂 From a few seasons near the end, the episodes were less funny, and for the last season, they brought back the original writing team, which was a very good decision.

I assumed the writers had already been using AI, probably for the last 4-5 years. The story structures were too smart while being too stupid. They'd miss glaring continuity errors but include weirdly specific references. They'd incorporate interesting themes, but forget about them almost immediately. They'd build emotional resonance, and then fail to deliver, or even recall it. It all neatly falls into that specific uncanny valley that AI art always manages to strike.

Disney would be offended by what they are turning out now. Disney was all about wholesome entertainment for children and adults. He loved American History and story’s with morals and lessons of character. Victimhood is the antithesis of Disney. He wouldn’t bash any race or accuse people of unfair advantage. There are very few real new thoughts most writers tell the same stories with different names and scenes. Even Tolkien used literary models of Men on A Quest, Mythology, The rise and Fall of characters and races he even used stuff he hated like allegory. Personally I think that Lord of the Rings was the last time real Landscape will be integrated as a characteristic of the movie with CGI. Fewer films will be made in real landscapes. The Music and Landscapes were as important as any actor. The use of film and video will diminish sadly. Like real voices of singers replaced by auto tune. The problem Unions can’t deal with is anyone can write and produce profitable entertainment with a $1000.00 camera or a phone.

As long as the works of AI programs CANNOT be copyrighted in the U.S., the human creator has the big advantage. U.S. copyright law is very clear: ONLY works created by humans are eligible for copyright protection. The U.S. Copyright Office has already refused to register works created by AI, and in the case of a graphic novel written by a person but illustrated by AI art, copyright was granted to the writing but refused for the artwork since it was not human created. This human authorship requirement is well-established, long-standing, and backed by legal precedent.

@@primmakinsofis614 I really don't think that has much to do with it as that is very easy to circumvent. Nothing prevents an actual person from taking credit for something AI-generated. After all, if computer art is considered a production of the person behind the keyboard why wouldn't AI art (even things like a script) be a production of the person typing "run" on the console. However, what AI generates depends totally on what is used to train the AI. So you can kind of see the argument for not allowing AI to write or rewrite or AI productions to be used as source material for writing (BTW, nice euphemism for taking credit for what the AI produced). People used to ask: “Can a machine ever pass the Turing Test?” Now we are dealing with a whole union full of people who couldn’t pass the Turing Test themselves to save their life (or rather jobs), because a machine (or a stick, or a piece of dogshit) is more human than they will ever be! I sincerely hope none of them work again!

the same people make the same mistakes, and then the public is blamed for the failures, simply because it is not at the level of their genius.

On one hand, I want to support worker's rights. On the other, these hack writers have destroyed most of the IPs I've loved. So... yeah. Mixed feelings. I worry for the few good writers, and what might happen to their work. Have been looking forwards to the second season of Andor, and this might put a wrench in that.

I agree. I think they need to get off their high horses, and pay them less. And hire more competent writers. Unions work, and are honestly a good thing. Unless you’re the Hollywood writers and abuse it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Ugh. I miss 90s TV. 😫

At this point, the studios should simply come out and say "Yeah, we're not going to negotiate on the A.I. because we are planning on using it and will be actively reducing our writer pool over the next several years". Just don't beat around the bush, just flat out tell them - what are they going to do?

What they need is the HR hiring and firing decisions made by AI.

AI is only as good/ethical as the programmer who programmed and trained it. If you’ve got a pro-affirmative action programmer telling the HR AI to hire only a certain type of person, based on race/sex/creed/orientation (which is technically illegal... which is why affirmative action is nonsense), then that’s what the AI will hire.
