One of my favorite things about Alice is the line "don't just do something, stand there" I am always quoting that. Just the whole nonsense of the Tea party scene really. A lot of great lines in there! I'm hoping for a Hunchback of Notre Dame Down to Disness soon! :)

Give the song "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane a listen, for a '60s psychedelic rock bands, take on the story. The forbidden fruit among Disney movies is "Song of the South," as it was never released on VHS/DVD in America. You can sing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah." You can ride Splash Mountain, but there's no Uncle Remus in sight; tackle that movie.

Alice in Wonderland is probably one of my favorite classic disney movies and I'm so upset that we don't have more of it in Disney World! I love Cheshire and the face characters of Alice and Mad Hatter in Disneyland! I think that you should do Cinderella in honor of the new live action remake or Peter Pan. Keep up the great work, Sarah!

Fun Fact: Lewis Carroll's many works also include "A Tangled Tale" (Has Rapunzel read it??), a collection of logic puzzles, and "The Hunting of the Snark", which is basically the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" of nonsense poems.

This series is terrific and you're so engaging! Great job, Sarah. I loooove more obscure stuff (I used to draw the watches on Main Street in New Century Timepieces in the late 90's - along with a handful of other artists - and loved making watch designs of lesser known characters) and wanna put 'The Black Cauldron' and 'The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad' on the table. Sleepy Hollow is a fave of mine. Melody Time could be interesting, too. And...I kind of "squeee'd" with delight when you sang in this video. Heh heh. Adorbies. :)

Fantastic video! I didn't know about the ad-libbed line. Seems like, in some way, that may have set the stage for Robin Williams to basically do ALL ad-lib in Aladdin. An homage? I don't know, but would be interested to find out. Also, the Alice/drugs connection was really solidified with "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. Although I wonder; was the song in response to the drug ideas that had developed around the story, or did the song help push the story down that road?

I think Disney has just always been pretty open to comedians doing their thing during voice acting sessions, which is incredible.

My all time favorite Disney movie! I have always loved the character complexity of this movie, the Cheshire Cat especially. They're never really good or bad, except for the Queen of Hearts, of course, but they each have such developed personalities. It's also that rare Disney movie where you have a main female character that is just her quirky self without chasing after a prince. Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love Disney princess movies, but it took Disney a very long time to get back to this type of female protagonist.

It's amazing to me how Walt was able to convince broadcasters to air his specials on TV, when he knew that these TV shows would help promote his product/services. He was truly an Innovator, and I often wonder how he would approach social media today. I'm glad you mentioned something about the peter pan songs.

like everyone else, I am really enjoying this series so far! Honestly I'm kind of torn about whether I like the film Alice in Wonderland (the scene with the clams always freaks me out) but I really appreciate all the iconic scenes and characterizations. I had no idea it was pretty unsuccessful until it became a cult favorite later on! I would love for you to do Peter Pan next. That story has some of the most interesting impacts on pop culture in my opinion--there are SO many interpretations and imaginings of it. Plus it was referenced a couple times in this video so I feel like it'd be a natural step for the next installment :)

I love the song the Cheshire Cat sings! it's called Jabberwocky and its a poem from through the looking glass, it has been put to music for choirs and of course the Cheshire Cat. I sang and studied this piece in chorus last year, it's weird nonsense words are really fun and the choir versions involves a lot of weirdness but I loved preforming it - you should listen to that version :) I would love to see the controversies on both Pocahontas' next on the series, thanks for making these I think they're totally brilliant!

Fun fact that I actually didn't know until recently: you don't pronounce the "g" in Dodgson! It's actually pronounced "Dod-son"; Lewis Carroll and his family insisted on that bc he was afraid of being nicknamed "dodgy" (meaning "weird, loopy") or something of that variant. So it's actually a lot easier to pronounce!

Of course there have been enough movie versions (both on the big screen and small) of _Alice_ to fill a coffee table book (which I have -- _Alice's Wonderland_ by Catherine Nichols), and Disney's version is admittedly not my favorite, but there's a lot I've always liked about it. -- The fact the White Rabbit is very much more likable than in the book, the Dodo as a salty sea captain, the bizarre creatures in the forest (some of which make a return appearance in _Donald in Mathemagicland_), and especially comedic character actor Richard Haydn as the Caterpillar. I also have a sentimental soft spot for the rare Disneyland vinyl record of the _Alice_ songs arranged by Tutti Camarata and sung by his chorus. I listened to it ad infinitum until the record was well-worn when I was a child.

DaveLH That studio cast record of Alice is definitely a favorite of many. Darlene Gillespie sings well on it, and she also narrated the original Storyteller made back then, although later pressings are told by Ginny Tyler. There will probably be a new cd set featuring the soundtrack as well as the studio cast, in the Legacy series. As far as the Tulgey Wood scene you mentioned, the Jabberwock was originally going to appear also, and can be seen in the early Disney Alice books.

I can totally understand why Alice became a cult classic in the 60's. Anyone heard of the Jefferson Airplane song, "White Rabbit"? And I thought a reference would've also been made on the Tim Burton-inspired "Mad T Party" event that ran at Disney's California Adventure theme park since June 2012 (and will be making a return on May 22 of this year). :)

Also! The full answer to the raven/writing desk riddle actually goes "They both produce notes, though they be very flat; and they are nevar put with the wrong end in front!" The "nevar" is of course, "raven" spelled backwards, or put with the "wrong end in front"...I'm much more partial to the "Edgar Allan Poe wrote on both" answer though bc it's much more clever and concise. Sorry if these comments get a bit overzealous, I'm probably one of the biggest Alice in Wonderland book fans ever and I'm also a huge freaking nerd. :')

My dad hated Disney's "Alice" because he was such a Lewis Carroll purist, so as a kid it was always a "guilty pleasure" for me... I don't care that Disney made so many changes... I'm not a hugely big fan of the original "Wonderland" book anyway -- I think the sequel, "Through the Looking-Glass" is much better. Anyway, my favorite things about the Disney version are: -- The weird creatures in the "Tulgy Wood" sequence -- The fact that the White Rabbit is a much more sympathetic character than in the book -- Richard Haydn (movie comedian from that era) as the Caterpillar -- And yes, Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatter... (He of course also played Uncle Albert in "Mary Poppins")

I'd just like to point out that EVERY adaptation of the Alice books, before, after and including the Disney version, uses the 'it was all a dream' ending, because that's how both books end. I don't see how anyone could possibly complain about that. If it's become a 'cop-out ending', I think that has more to do with the 'Wizard of Oz' film than anything Alice-related (because that ending WAS a cop-out - a gigantic one. If Oz is supposed to be a dream, explain to me why there are 40+ books where it's a real place).

OK. First of all, this is one of the best videos you have done. I was entranced the whole time. Most of this was completely new to me. Thanks! Secondly, You looked especially good in this vid. Now don't sic the boyfriend on me, but you looked totally super model, hotchickeybabe in this one. Keep it up. Thirdly: The movie I would like to see done next? I'm tempted to say, "The Black Hole" just to see that movie get the panning it deserves....but you work so well with positive upbeat themes. I would love to see Peter Pan because all the characters were so well done (and when I was a widdle kid, Tinkerbell was my first crush). This vlog was quality work from top to bottom. Thanks!

I thought I was the only person who noticed King Candy/Mad Hatter! It bugged me so much! Also, I LOVE the orignal 'second star to the right (beyond the laughing sky) and 'Im odd''!

Enjoyed your video! Could I make a plea for "Pocahontas"? I love the morals, but it gets so much "wrong" from the historical record. It'd make for an informative video! Gracias!

Definitely one of my all time favourites!! I always loved the Cheshire Cat, voiced by the wonderful Sterling Holloway! It would be wonderful to know more about Sleeping Beauty or The Jungle Book!

Hey Sarah!! love this playlist and actually all your disney related videos!! I would love to see a Peter Pan or Aladdin Down to Disness. Last summer I was monitoring a summer camp in Spain and the theme was Alice in Wonderland!! It was one of the greatest weeks of my entire life!! I made myself the Mad Hatter's hat out of a cereal box for a game and it turned out really well. What I love most about the story is that for example in the second book, Alice is the one that has to kill the Jaberwocky because she's the only "real" character, she is the only one to go through an evolution throughout the story, all the rest have their excuses to not kill it and they can't change their fate because they are part of Alice's imagination. If you read the books you will find the poetry AMAZING!! Thank you so much for your work, Miriam

I'm never really able to watch this movie cause on my first trip to Disney, I went on the Alice dark ride(the very first dark ride I went on, mind you) and got scarred for life. My parents claim I was crying and screaming bloody murder in between my grandparents, and to this day I get slight anxiety going on the dark rides, or even just being in the park very long past close. Of course now having read the books and watched both this version and the Tim Burton remake, I can appreciate it, but it'll never be high on my list of favorites. Love these videos, Sarah!! You should totally do Beauty & the Beast!!

I think what I love most about Alice in Wonderland is the entire tea party scene. The soundtrack for it always comes up in my Disney playlist and I can't help but to dance to it haha! It reminds me so much of Disneyland because of the area music for Mad Tea Party! As for the next Down to Disness, I would LOOOVE to see Sleeping Beauty, it's my favorite movie of all time and I can't wait to see what cool things you would find out about it, especially with Maleficent coming out just last year!
