IT’S ALSO NOTABLE TO POINT OUT THAT SONIC 3 IS JUST, AWESOME?! Putting my bias aside for a second, let me give my review, spoiler free first, and then spoilers in the second section. Like the previous two movies, the plot is very simple, and the depth isn’t something that’s going to grip you. But also like the previous two movies, the story simply doesn’t need to be Song of Ice and Fire or Full Metal Alchemist… okay those are two weirdly random examples. Point is, the movie is entertaining for all ages, and I think that merit is often overlooked in the realm of movie criticism. Even if you know nothing about Sonic prior to watching the movies, the movie universe does a fantastic job of building up the characters and what makes them appealing, not only making their roles and personalities faithful to their game counterparts without directly copying the exact same story beats. The movies act as a fantastic point to introduce people to Sonic and I don’t see a lot of people giving this movie series enough merit for that. This kind of story quality feels like it shouldn’t be difficult for writers, but is it just me or are most billion dollar companies fumbling when hiring talent to make their products for them? There are thousands upon millions of visionaries all over the world. It’s difficult to make quality art, but the dumpster fire media I’ve seen getting pumped out in every media genre, from Hollywood movies to anime to AAA video games, it’s like people don’t care about art anymore. That said, Sonic somehow managed to blow away my expectations back when the first film came out since at the time, Sonic was the LAST franchise I expected to pick up good steam and yet here we are, two more movies later, the train still going strong. I realize I got opinionated at the end there, sorry in advance. We enter the spoiler section now. WARNING I SPOIL LITERALLY EVERYTHING NO SERIOUSLY DON’T LOOK IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILM If you’re here I’m assuming you either don’t care or you’ve seen the film. Anyways, SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG RIDES A MOTORCYCLE AND GRABS A GUN WITHIN PRACTICALLY THE FIRST SCENE OF THE MOVIE AND HE PROCEEDS TO DO THE *AKIRA SLIDE* UP THE SIDE OF THE FRIGGING *TOKYO SKYTREE* I KNOW THIS IS OLD NEWS, BUT I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE THAT SHADOW IS VOICED BY KEANU REEVES! SHADOW IS VOICED BY THE CHOSEN ONE! BABA YAGA! KEANU “WAKE THE FUCK UP SAMURAI” REEVES! AND HIS VOICE *WORKS* I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH THE CASTING CHOICE WAS PERFECT! THE PLOT FEELS GENUINELY, WELL, GENUINE! AGAIN, THE STORY IS SIMPLE, BUT IT WORKS! THIS MOVIE WAS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO WRITE! I know this’ll sound stupid but when they brought back the “stars still shine even when they’re gone” thing and connected it with the themes of love and loss, I genuinely felt that. It is very poignant and mature, ESPECIALLY for a movie largely targeted towards children (note that I say targeted, not made for. Films should always be for all audiences). OH RIGHT! WHEN SONIC AND SHADOW TEAM UP AND THEY START TO PLAY ‘LIVE AND LEARN’?!?! THE FACT THAT THE LYRICS ARE THEMATICALLY APPROPRIATE FOR THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE?!?! THE FACT THAT BOTH THE PREVIOUS FIGHT BETWEEN SHADOW AND SONIC AND THE TEAM UP SCENE ARE ANIMATED LIKE SHOUNEN ACTION SAKUGA BUT WITH BIG BUDGET CGI! THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT TOO! SONIC AND SHADOW BOUNCE OFF OF EACH OTHER AND MAKE EACH OTHER DEVELOP, THEY DON’T JUST EXIST IN THEIR OWN VACUUMS! DR. ROBOTNIK GETS A FUCKING REDEMPTION?!?! AND IT DOESN’T FEEL FORCED?!?! IN FACT, ALL OF THE CHARACTERS FEEL CONSISTENT AND THEIR ACTIONS IN THE PLOT MAKE PERFECT SENSE! *EGGMAN HAS A LASER THAT PISSES ON THE MOOOOOOOON* There are post credits scenes. Two in fact. But I don’t think I want to spoil those even in the spoiler section, just in case there are people who ignored my warnings. I draw the line at spoiling post credit scenes. (Long Comment Warning) The main thing that a lot of non sonic fans seem to forget. Is the fact that sonic has been around for over 30 years now. Which obviously means that there is a lot of sonic fans that are now fully grown adults. So that means a lot of sonic fans actually have their own money to do whatever they want. Without having to ask for their parents permission. Such as going to watch a movie that they actually asked for. Or buying a video game whenever they feel like it rather than waiting for their birthday or Christmas. Basically the sonic fandom is a massive extremely diverse worldwide fan base that cannot be influenced into abandoning the franchise. Just so that greedy company’s that don’t care about their fans. Can make more money with lazy unoriginal ideas. Heck Sonic fans even went to see the Mario movie. Because even though Mario and Sonic are rivals Sonic fans still enjoyed it. Because it was actually a good movie that had effort put into it. Unfortunately there is a lot of people that absolutely hate Sonic for seemingly no valid reason. This is going to age like fine wine as the days and weeks go on. Sonic 3 is set to its predicted 60-70M domestic box office at the end of the weekend. Disney was probably praying that the predicted 150M international box office would save them, but now it's the opposite, it's now predicted that it will make only 87.2M internationally, leaving a grand total of around 119-120M for this weekend, and remember, Sonic 3 is making 60M+ from domestic ALONE, once it releases to international markets on Christmas, it's gonna be game over for Disney
