Fun fact: They had to make a whole new code just to animate Merida's curly red locks for this movie and it's CHANGED the game of animating hair ever since. Sully's fur in _Monsters Inc._ was a similar story.
@nodezsh
@nodezsh Жыл бұрын
The most iconic example was always Violet's hair in The Incredibles, which was extremely fine and long, and had an extreme amount of strands. Brad Bird kept pushing the animators to put a million new techniques into The Incredibles and I think they hated it. But the one that stands out is Violet's hair because now we have *CGI hair* woot I remember watching some commentary on the 2 DVD version of Finding Nemo and they talked about the way they animated the sentient school of fish. Apparently some of the fishes would stop behaving and they'd have to kill the process in the same fashion that a frozen Windows program would be killed in the Task Manager. (I remember I initially understood that they killed the fishes and I didn't understand why they said it like that, I was like 5 years old. But by then I abused my time on the computer and got the idea anyway.) I remember reading somewhere that Pixar put a lot of their animation software experiments into their shorts. These would be carried onto the movie. So you would see a short before every single Pixar movie, and then some more would be distributed on the disc releases as well. Nowadays, CGI engineers are no longer only Pixar's job to maintain, but they're kinda the ones who made the field a thing.

Didn't they also do that with Shrek for Donkey's fur and Fiona's hair? @@nodezsh
@nodezsh
@nodezsh Жыл бұрын
@@dhivaansalig6398 Short answer: Donkey's hair did not flow. Fiona's hair was not animated in single strands, which means it was definitely easier to animate by hand; Violet's hair was the first time anyone managed, so it would have been impossible to animate Fiona's hair if not tied up. EDIT: I made a huge comment essay behind this comment and decided to erase it from existence. Basically, coding the software for Violet's hair is an extremely complex and intricate job where animators tell the computer how hair should flow in an animated movie, because animating every singular hair strand one by one is impossible. There's too much detail.

I adore the fact the Merida doesn’t sing her own songs, we don’t ALWAYS need them to sing their own songs. It’s kinda refreshing to not have a main character randomly break out into song idk

I never realized this movie had a post credits scene of the bird delivering he wood carvings lol. Guess it seemed like such a minor detail that I never thought about it. Also, glad you liked Brave, it gets a lot of hate compared to other movies of the era. When I watched it myself, I couldn't really fathom the amount of hate I had scene directed at it. Is it DIsney/Pixar's best? No, but it's not like the worst thing ever like I've heard some people say.

Never thought about that. I like that idea. The only origin story I know for them has to do with drunk Jack. Basically the idea was that the lights are like the lanterns souls that are stuck wandering forever because they are denied entrance into the good afterlife. While not the best ending for our guy, it may be better cause he’d be (as you said) freed from his greed and anger.

I really like Brave! But what I think made people upset about this film was the misleading trailers. I can understand that. The trailers made it look like it was going to take us on this epic adventure and stuff, but it turned out to be about the mother being turned into a bear. The things that save this movie for me was the relationship between the characters, especially Merida and her mother. There was also some pretty funny humor and gorgeous animation. Welcome back, Sophie! I hope everything has been well.

There's a fan-theory that the witc... er, woodcarver is actually Boo from Monsters Inc (and later Abby from Turning Red). "Boo" was never the girl's actual name - just what Sully decided to call her. Between the events in Monsters Inc and Sully later visiting her, she became fascinated with the concept of doors being used as portals to other worlds. Eventually - either because she grew up or some other reason - she and Sully could no longer visit, so she began looking for ways to restore their friendship. Abby also wears purple (Boo's principal color in Monsters Inc), complete with flowers such as what she had on her bedroom door. She's wild and fearless, particularly given that she had the top scarer of the monster realm for her best friend when she was younger. (She most certainly wasn't the least bit scared of Randall by the end of Monsters Inc.) Among the witches many carvings of bears are a few which are quite clearly of Sully. She also used door magic to isolate her magical workshop from her carving workshop.

I must just be an emotional person to cry no matter how many times I watch the movie. As someone with a similar family from Wales (celtic, as Scottish is) and have a very close relationship with my mother. Like many other families the women in mine are... hot tempered to say the least, but always have their hearts in the right place. We would clash constantly when I was a teenager because we're both so stubborn, but as an adult, I wouldn't have had anyone else raise me. She's there for me no matter what, so the mama-bear thing I definitely related to. The woman nearly had a war with my school for mishandling my medications as I was quite sickly growing up. Everytime I watch Brave it's just like watching us, and I always cry everytime.

🐻👍 You're always a hoot. I think the trend in Disney/Pixar films in general over the last decade is to not have princesses that wind up marrying princes in the end (Moana, Raya, Mirabel etc). ☺ If you're having copyright issues with Dreamworks, I'll just remind you that there are also a lot of good animated features out there that are neither made by Disney OR Dreamworks. "Spies In Disguise" (2019), "The Mitchells Vs The Machines" (2021), and "Ron's Gone Wrong" (2021) are all a lot of fun, and "Wonder Park" (2019) is an underappreciated gem. Of course, for more serious adult oriented viewing, "9" (2009) is the one to watch.

This was the second Disney animated movie I ever saw (the first being "The Lion King"). My mom was very opposed to me watching the old Disney movies because she didn't feel they presented a good message to young girls. They were always about falling in love and finding a prince who would save you, often at way too young an age (Ariel was 14, I think in "The Little Mermaid." Unless I'm getting her mixed up with Snow White. I know one of them is 14 and the other is 16) Jasmine was 15, most are 16... After my mom died, my dad took the same stance because it was what my mom wanted. I didn't start seeing these movies until a few years after this came out. I was 12 at the time. But the newer princesses were starting to be strong and independent, standing up for themselves and seeking their own destiny without clinging to a man, so I was totally on board, and I think my mom would have been too. "Brave" is special to me because I found Merida so inspirational. And I also really wanted a bow, even though I'm not sure a bow can be fired properly from a wheelchair. Also, I think my love of Merida as a character may also be part of the reason I find redheads so beautiful. 🤔

This is still my favorite of all the Disney princess movies. It gets some flak for being out of the norm of standard Disney princess movies, but it really took aspects from Mulan and set the stage for many of the stronger Disney princesses we have seen in the last decade. For me the best and often unnoticed moment is right after the stone falls on Mor'du and his spirit is final released. He turns to Merida, closes his eyes and briefly nods to her. This is not a expression of gratitude from a prince to princess, it is a acknowledgement of thanks from one warrior to another. Fun fact, the slow motion of when she looses the arrow at the tournament is a near perfect representation of what an arrow does fired from bow.

Great description! I did liked this movie more than Tangled. It was extremely overrated, and it wasn't... as great as many said it was. Brave was a much better movie, with a better message. The advertisement was misleading, but after you get over that, you'll realize just how great the movie actually is. The overall plot isn't the best, but Merida is one great character. A strong woman who doesn't need a man in her life to do great things! Not only that, but even though you understand her, she could come out as selfish, and in the end, both her and her mother learned a valuable lesson, bonded beautifully and made a great team! Seriously, too many movies focus on romance. Why can't we have parental bonding as the main message in movies more often instead? And as a bonus, Merida has both parents. I can't be the only one tired of the dead parent trope, especially in Disney movies. If you're going to remove a parent, use another excuse other than death, say, like a certain underrated movie did.

Brave was going to be Pixar´s first animated movie to be directed by a woman, the animator Brenda Chapman wanted to make it a mother-daughter drama based on things that she went through with her teenage daughter (she was like Elinor and her daughter was like Merida) but the CEO Jon Lassater who was very toxic and sexist did like that so he took this project away from her and gave it to Mark Andrews who chose to make it more like an adventure and war story instead of focusing in the human relationships, that´s why in the start it feels like it´s going in one direction and then in the middle it feels like they suddenly went to another one, because they unnecessarily changed the directors and they had different visions for this, and in the ending credits Mark Andrew´s name came first as the director when the idea was Brenda´s, "Turning Red" became Pixar´s first movie directed by a woman and that´s because gladly they fired Jon after he got many accusations of harassment from workers there

Just curious, how long does editing a video like this take? I've never edited but it looks like it would take 10 - 20 hours of work.

@@SophieLents Yeah I'm not surprised, there's something new on the screen every 3-4 seconds for 30 minutes straight, that's hundreds of things you have to do in editing.

I will say I’m pretty disappointed with what they did with Meridas father. Like in the beginning he was set up to be the powerful man who fought a bear and came out alive (injured or not). Yet then he can’t speak publicly, takes orders from his wife and daughter… like he’s just so disappointing.

Ngl the later half of the film was kinda forgettable for me, but the archery scene will FOREVER be ingrained in my memory

What if the parents in storyes like this, didnt actually open up to their kid, but changed their view just because they saw how crazy their child/friend became, and didnt want that to happen again. Lol.

I didn't think this was better than Tangled, I thought it was better than Toy Story 3, the movie that came out same year everyone raved about 😅 This opinion could get me lynched in certain corners of the internet, but oddly, a lot of my artist friends seem to agree 😂

9:02 Factually incorect. Corsets arent much different from bras and belts. They do completly the same thing. The only problem occurs when they are far to tight.

I would have liked the movie more if it was about an adventure traveling the countryside rather than trying to undo or survive some curse.
