I feel like a lot of people , including you, misunderstand Isabela's "stuck being perfect"-line. She didn't mean it like "Oh, poor me, I'm sooo perfect", but more like "Everyone expects me to be perfect!"

I was kind of surprised by how many people misunderstood that line. As soon as she said that and followed up with the marrying for the family and not herself I understood she was acting and doing things because she was expected to not because she wanted to. Lol love this movie can't wait to buy it and have my own copy.

Exactly! It was Mirabel's Talk/song with Isabella that led to the confrontation with her grandmother which led to the scene of the river. Purposeful misdirection! It's really cool, because it's obvious misdirection because Bruno literally said said it's out of order, but nobody realizes it. They think it's the grandma, then I think it's Isabella, and they don't go back to their original thought initially, because they forget that it's out of order. I love that scene. I love everything about Bruno. He is my boy. He might be twice my age, but he is my son. 😀

When Mirabel touches the candle in the flashback, the flame turns into Abuela. The reason she didn't "get" a door is because she already had one. The FRONT door of casita. Abuela doesn't have a Gift, she is the keeper of the candle. As will be Mirabel after Abuela has passed.

Isabela’s storyline hit the hardest for me - she’s the eldest daughter & grandchild and she clearly looks the most like abuela so her entire life abuela has been trying to live vicariously through her wanting isa to have the ~perfect~ life abuela wasn’t able to! even down to the detail of mariano looking similar to abuelo pedro and abuela being so eager for the marriage proposal and what it will do for the family when isa clearly doesn’t want it her bitchy attitude toward mirabel for the majority of the movie is a result of her being jealous that mirabel doesn’t have to uphold a perfect image & is allowed to be herself

@@Iamjustherek yup!! her vision is honestly sad though because she was told she’d have the life of her dreams & her power would grow, but at the point in the movie where she’s singing about it she’s stuck upholding a perfect image, about to get engaged to a man she doesn’t want to marry and can only grow perfect flowers over and over again.. so while it sounds like an ideal vision to abuela & the rest of the fam, internally isabella feels betrayed because this isn’t the dream life she wants

@@kenna_elyse Maybe she did want that life but just because that perfect life is the only life "she knew", cuz to the point of the story when she sings about her prophecy she didn't knew what else she could do. Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did. He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

as a Colombian I loved the fact that they spent so much time and effort on actually learning our culture, history and little details. I cried because I saw myself and my culture represented so beautifully throughout the movie. The grandpa’s death is hinting at a hard time in history where a lot of families lost their homes and relatives due to political violence (liberales and conservadores war), the candles are a reference to our día de las velitas, the sounds in the songs are spot on and they hired Colombian singers for the songs and Colombian voice actors for the characters in the Spanish version. The food, the ethnic diversity and even some gestures are perfect, this was really well made and I’m so happy to finally see other people seeing and enjoying my country in a new light 💖

I agree with you abt the house. Although this story is all abt magical realism, where magic happens and it doesn’t have an explanation, it feels like the grandpa had a lot to do with it. I feel the miracle was born from both the grandpa’s sacrifice and the grandma’s wish. They were united by magic, since the butterfly made him look at her in the first place, and the candle is the same (or made to look similar) to their wedding candle. Therefore the miracle is from them both. However, it’s just a theory since, as mentioned, this is magical realism.

We could theorize about the fact that both the miracle Abuela Alma received, and the miracle Mirabel received happened at the same place, at the river. And that maybe that spot in the river has something to do with it. But that kinds of ruins the magic of it all.

Luisa's song encapsulates what it feels like to be the oldest sibling in a hispanic family with everyone putting all the preassure on you to be the responsible reliable one. i am the oldest in the family and it messed me up fierce I was in charge of my brother and had to take on soo any responsabilities early in life to help in the household like meals and chores and I een started working in my moms office at age 12, at 14 I was working at camps (I used those paychecks so me and my brother had working cellphones) and when i was 15 i was taking over Managing and closing my moms hair salon (a bad idea for her to purchase and manage one when she had no clue) from after school till 10 pm every single day not to mention full days on weekends while she did extra work as an insurance agent while my brother got to go out and hang out with friends when we moved to the U.S. i was going to highshool and working a full time job so that my mom didnt have to work 2 jobs and i gave her like 90% of my paycheck cause I walked everywhere. IT got to the point my Italian teacher agreed to let me sleep in his class as long as I Maintained a C avarage and he knew I could understand the language cause he saw how tired i was every day to the point I had no time to even study like 4 days out of the week. People ask me why I settle for passing now a days and at like I am lazy for not over achieving or wanting some great rich life but I just honestly want peace quiet and to simply just get by with no more stress

I am the oldest of three, though my family is black not Hispanic I felt a lot of the pressure Luisa sings about. I was very surprised at first to find out she was the middle daughter and Isabela is the oldest at 21, Luisa is 19, and Mirabel is 15 (I have the same age gaps with my siblings). But on a second watch I realized how much sense it made that Isabela was the oldest. Isabela was expected to live her life solely for the family and furthering the family's miracle. And while doing so she needed to not only be perfect herself but also keep everything appearing perfect with the rest of the family. Because anything that they do reflects back on her. She supposed to keep everything perfect. And Alma was putting the pressure to ease her own fears. It actually made me think of when I was younger, I was often left in charge of my siblings. And my siblings would do something and it would come back to why did I let them do that? Why did I stop them? And there were times where I felt like I would get in more trouble for their actions and they did oh, because I was the oldest. And I was expected to keep everything easy for the adults. I will say my mother is also the oldest and she actively tried to defuse those situations but my grandmother, great-grandparents common even great-great-grandmother we're very set in their ways about this. Actually as an example when I was 15 years old, I was in a bookstore with my sister who is 13 and my grandmother. My sister was standing between my grandmother and I, reading the back of a book. Also my grandmother says "Jennifer (my sister's name) hand me that book." My sister did move towards it shows really engrossed in what she was doing. So my grandmother repeated it a second time. I remember being absolutely shocked that my sister was completely ignoring our grandmother. But not as shocked as I was when my grandmother reached passed my sister and thumped me in the back of the head and said "I told you to hand me that book!" Obviously I replied know you told Jennifer and I am Brandy. No surprise that that argument did not work and she just told me I should have known she meant me. And not once did my sister get talked to.

The reconciliation scene made me cry. It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family. She did not ask forgiveness or say BUT or IF YOU HAD ONLY. She took sole responsibility and held her tongue on her pride. That's maturity to me.

I was trying to avoid spoilers before watching the movie, and only looked at trailers--even then I suspected when one of those "people who made the movie talking about the movie" trailers said Isabela's song would be called "What Else Can I Do" that it would mean "what choice do I have". In the trailers she's always twirling around making flowers, and Mirabel's "Senorita Perfecta" line is dubbed over that, I thought the song would be a lament about everyone putting her on a pedestal and wishing she could be seen as something other than pretty. I was partially right, I guess.

So here is my theory, so Mirabel is the embodiment of the gift or takes the place of Abuela, whatever she is considered to be. I think the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift was because of Abuela and how she interacted with Mirabel and the magic. She tells Mirabel about how the gift is going to directly help the family and not her. I think Abuela subconsciously gave all of the kids their gifts, except for Antonio which I believed Mirabel gave him his gift. She gifts him a tiger and says he's an animal guy and walks holding his hand before he touches the door. I think Abuela was only thinking of what gift would suit the family best and not what would suit Mirabel best so she didn't get a gift. I also think she probably has a subconscious effect on the magic and everyone's power. When Luisa is feeling overburdened Mirabel reduces her magic. When Isabella is angry and yelling at Mirabel her power expands to something new. Then later effecting them all via breaking the house. She didn't feel a part of the family anymore so the magic didn't feel like a part of the family. When she felt fully integrated into the family it all came back.

This also makes sence if you think of Alma´s roll(the grand mother) She has no gift but she can controll the house to some capacity, I think like so many others that Mirabel didn´t get a gift becuse she is the next Matriach of the family. Sure she has two older sisters but they got gifts Mirabel didn´t "get one" she got all of them, or atleast the power to help them work together. That was what Alma was supose to do but she lost sight of that.

That's what I was thinking too! Since there was no candle the second time the house came alive, that had to mean that Mirabel was the living embodiment of the magic/miracle itself. And also makes sense why she and Abuela Alma are the only ones you see directly speaking to the Casita/interacting with the Casita.

I think Bruno's stuff at the end was perfect because remember that Abuela doesn't know why Bruno left. From her perspective- Mirabel didn't get her gift at her ceremony, that night she begged Bruno to have a vision because she was worried for the miracle, then Bruno has a vision but doesn't let anyone see it, and disappears. Abuela assumes the vision was bad and that Bruno doesn't love the family b/c instead of sticking around to warn them and help give them clues they might use to fight or avoid the trouble, he just abandoned the family without even letting them know what was coming. At the end, Abuela accepts Bruno back in a way that's not specific because it can't be- she doesn't know the whole story and just like with the dynamic between Isabella & Mirabel, it's more complicated than "one side is completely wrong." Bruno could have communicated better (such as what he pulled at Pepa's wedding- well intention-ed as it was, it's still kind of a jerk move to induce your weather-controlling sister into causing a hurricane on her wedding day) or kept some of his prophecies to himself (why tell those guys they'd get fat & go bald? Why not keep that to himself?) Abuela accepting him back without even knowing why he left and the "the miracle is you, not your gift, just you" line is her accepting that she is partially at fault for the rift & that it doesn't matter what his partial fault is because it's not more important than reconciling with him.
@naya9076
@naya9076 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that the reason Bruno told people is because he only has visions when people ask him to. So everyone in the village came to him for visions, and he told the truth so as to prepare them for the future, negative or positive. It's not his fault that so many were negative and people didn't like that! Maybe try keeping your goldfish in a bigger aquarium more suited to the species if you don't want it to die??? Jeez!
@vadalia3860

@@naya9076 Nothing in the movie indicates he can only have visions when people ask him. That his words at Pepa's wedding were taken as being one of his visions indicates he doesn't need to be asked (because no one did) And the vibe of Mirabel's "well, just see more" comment comes off like he could have done that at any time, not that he was helpless until someone came along who asked. So I'm sticking with the fact he could have kept his visions to himself and in many cases should have.

I had the same theory about Abuelo Pedro being the spirit of the house! I also think the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift was... The only other person to not have an obvious magical gift is Abuela. Instead, as head of the family, she has a responsibility. She's the force that holds the family together. The problem is, her power was rooted in trauma, which she passes down, hence the cracks. I think Mirabel was born to be the next family matriarch. When Abuela passes, I think Mirabel will become the new, central force holding the family together. She proves herself capable of doing exactly this, through the narrative, and, because her strength is born of love, the miracle is able to be rekindled as strong or stronger than ever.

Loved the reaction. I love this movie, and I liked your analysis. However I feel like this movie hits different for First generation immigrants. I was born in the US, however my mother is from Mexico and my father is from Venezuela. As a kid my dad always told me about stories from back home, a lot had to do with the never ending civil wars for government control. He struggled to get out on a scholarship to the U.S. Although my father is strict and stern whilst I was growing up, I always had to remind myself that he always pushed me because he didn't want to to experience the same life he did growing up. Now being an adult and seeing my father getting older I can look back and appreciate what he did for me when I was younger, and I'm sure others like me can say the same. P.s: I also love the fact that the setting was extremely accurate. Even the Spanish version of the movie was close to the way it's spoken in Colombia. And being that Venezuela and Colombia are neighbors, sharing the similar cultures, I can finally hear Spanish in a main stream media that sounds the way I speak it, and not just the traditional Mexican sound (not a jab at Mexico, I'm half Mexican).

This reaction was all the way through one of the most compassionate reads on abuela I've seen, and that felt kind of special. I must have watched *dozens* of these reactions over the last month (I'm a little late to the Encanto party), and I'm not sure if it's because abuela isn't the main character and people are just going into "spot the bad guy" mode, but people seem to get very mad right off the bad without thinking "this is someone with a lot of trauma who is feeling a feeling right now." It was nice to see it click right away in this one that she lost everything once and is scared of it happening again, even though it was a very long time ago. I think people can forget really easily that when something like that happens to a person, it's not over when it's over. If someone loses their house like that, it's not all better when they find a new house. When someone loses the love of their life to violence, they don't figure that's the only time that can happen. They stay scared. I thought it was really powerful how the movie handled her progression throughout, and it felt good to see someone express some kind of compassion for it even at the start.

i think why it was Isabella because she like the grandma treated her the same but the grandma is the head so to heal the house she had to handle someone who is similar. That's why the house was healing, it was the first step. The family is the foundation, and if the family is broken and hurt so is the house.

Abuela isn't just afraid of losing her home. It's a bit more than that. The magic/ miracle created the whole town. The violence they fled is still taking place and the only thing protecting them from it is the miracle which raised the mountains as a barrier and to conceal their encanto. So, I think that's what she means when she says they are vulnerable if the magic is dying out.

Abuela didn't need to apologize that much at the end. 1. The movie was almost over, time is a limit. 2. She still gave Bruno a hug, and brought him out to the family. 3. The VA for her did a great job on the "Brunito" line. That sounded like an apology enough for me.

Yeah the reveal of the painted plate GUTTED me when I first saw this film. That whole scene in the walls is so nuanced and balanced. EXCELLENT writing and acting. And Dos Oruguitas? Catch me sobbing every time. I also agree that the ending was rushed - I wanted more of the family coming together and reconciling, more apologies TO Bruno rather than FROM him, more explanations from all, and would have gladly accepted 15 more minutes of runtime to really sum up all of the loose ends, but I understand that with the way “All of You” was written, it didn’t allow for a lot of things to be discussed. We have to extrapolate on our own, ugh. Pacing, especially in kid-friendly films where they anticipate needing to keep things moving for the sake of younger watchers, can cause a lot of meaningful interactions to be excised. 😞 Oh, and yes - Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno are Abuela Alma’s triplets - the ones she was holding as she and Pedro escaped. Anyway, great reaction! I think you summed it up nicely with “Oh! That hit me personally, and I appreciate it.” 😂 That was this WHOLE movie for me.

My favorite thing about this particular Disney movie is that there really isn't a villain in the traditional sense. Yes abuela is antagonist but then you see what happened to her and understand that her lashing out was coming from a place of fear of losing everything again.

It is one of my favorite movies, possibly favorite. My fiancé is from Colombia so I am still learning stuff about her country and culture. The creators took inspiration from different time periods and different areas of Colombia but intentionally made it vague, even the attackers are left vague, this is great because this kind of thing has been happening in the country for a real long time and even though it has gotten much better it is still going on to this day. They did a real good job of representing Colombia where all other media always paints it in a bad light. Isabela is misunderstood by a lot of people, throughout the movie you are supposed to feel like she is this perfect person and has the perfect life, that pressure of being perfect is crushing because if she is not perfect than she is failing. This movie does a good job representing trauma, mental issues, family pressures, and just social pressures in general.

Finally someone pointed out what Casita did. Casita was dying but it used its last power to help and protect the family and literally its last "breath" to save Mirabel. And did you notice that while Casita helped everyone to get out of the house, Mirabel was the only one to get help from it to get to the candle? Isabela and Camilo were both very close to the candle when their powers disappeared but instead of helping them to make these last few steps Casita just helped them to get safely out. I think that's because Mirabel was supposed to save the family/miracle. That's why the vision showed her hugging Isabela. It wasn't about a hug, it was about reconcile. The cracks always appeared when Mirabel and the family grew apart further. On the outside her problems were mostly with Isabela and Abuela but deep down everyone (aside from Antonio) didn't really "saw" her. But since she is obviously the one to take over from Abuela (keeper of the magic) she needs the connection to her family. She and Abuela were the only one in the family who actively interacted with Casita.

A lot of young people are hating Abuela saying what she did was unforgivable. It was intentional for the movie to make you despise her tactics in the beginning. But even after the movie, some people still say her character was the worst still, and is beyond forgiveness. They missed the point of the movie. Yes, what she did was bad. But she finally let go of control. Most authority figures in the family never do that. She acknowledged her mistakes and made up for it. The family came back together and stronger than she had hoped.

But I think abuela didn't tell him to leave or something... But he left for his own decision knowing that everybody would judge him, and the reason he left was not clearly known by the family.. There was this vision about the destruction of the town with Mirabel in front but he didn't show it to anybody, he broke it... Probably he told it to grandma... But! Knowing the risk (I mean it would become real for sure) she preferred to stay together... And Bruno left so nobody would know more... It's very complicated indeed

He def knew if he told them, they would first think he was a lying on the new baby (Mirabel) and then when she actually didn't get her miracle, they would shun her thinking the vision is coming true (kind of like the town is with Bruno) would of been crazy if both Tio Bruno and Mirabel both left due to being seen as outcast

Well he knew his mom and even the other members of his family would'nt trust him , leaving his family was a big decision, he took it because he knew what his mom, specifically, could do if she knew about Mirabel, he knew / he felt that Abuela would treat Mirabel as a problem if she knew the exact vision Kind of sad, because no one trusted him he didn't trust his family to react the right way about the vision

The theory that I've come across which I really like is the theory that Mirabelle did get a gift at the proper time. Her gift, as the theory goes, is that she's the embodiment of the miracle, the way the candle was until this movie. She seems the most in-tune with Cassita, and it is when she is faltering that the house starts to crack... finally collapsing completely when Abuela lays into her the way she does. She's the one who is the key to bringing the magic back in the end, breathing life back into the rebuilt house and the family. What's more, the "All of you" song says "We see how bright you burn, We see how brave you've been, Now, see yourself in turn, You're the real gift, kid, let us in." Mirabel isn't just part of the family. She is, herself, the embodiment of the miracle.

My theory about the fact Mirabel has no gift is it's because Casita felt she has something special in her and decided she didn't need a gift. There's a subtil sign because Isabela says Mirabel is always on the say but it's thanks to the middle pillar (the one on the way) that a building can standing. About Isabela being perfect, she's the oldest daughter of Agustin and Julieta but also Abuela's first grandchild (Dolores has the same age but is younger) and a family expect to the eldest child to be an example to the siblings (and even a third parent for taking care of them if something happens to them). Honestly, I think this movie is a kind of illustration of how an handicaped person feels herself in her/his family. I recognize me inside because I'm the eldest daughter (so I suppose to be the example) but I have ASD and my sisters don't really accept it (one of the two last even told me that she's ashamed to have a sister like me).

I understand why other people wouldn't feel the same way, but I personally related to Isabela the most. I didn't have it nearly as bad as she did, but I know the pressure of being the 'perfect' one in the family. That kind of pressure can really mess you up. Isabela and Maribel both make assumptions about each other. Mirabel sees Isabela's 'perfect' life, all the attention she gets, and is jealous of her, because all Mirabel wants to do is help. In contrast, Isabela sees Mirabel's 'freedom,' how she has no expectations on her, and is jealous because all Isabel wants is to be free. Neither one knows the pressures the either is under, they don't talk about it with each other, so they end up in a loop of mutual bad feelings towards each other.

I wasn't the oldest of everyone but there were 6 of us. I was the 4th oldest. Each older child in my family took care of the kids younger than us. Because I was not the oldest I would still be watched by my older sisters but then when my younger sisters needed to be watched it was me who watched them. So that was confusing..but it's just how it went we also shared our stuff with each sibling younger. Two of the kids were step siblings so they were only over every other weekend but I always had them when they were over. I also shared my bedroom with them and my youngest sister. Which made us grow such a bind with each other. But my step sister and little sister kind of felt like my children. So I have a motherly feeling towards them. Which was a weird feeling growing up. Which when they were finally old enough to watch themselves it started over again with nieces and nephews. We'd help take care of them. I don't even remember a time where I wasn't responsible for someone which it think has something to do with why both my sister and I ended up mother's at 19. I relate to Luisa's song like crazy...I sobbed the first time I heard it.

Ok, so as a latina I really felt represented on this film because: 1. So many families have a matriarcal hierarchy. This is because a lot of our countries have had guerrillas, civil wars and dictatorships and most of killed people were men leaving woman in charge of the families. Also, we still maintain a "machista" society where men leave their families and woman are the pilar of the family system. 2. Latinos are very religious (not me), but I have family in Colombia and they are. I also think in Colombia there is a particular veneration of the Virgin (another matriarch) And we are also supersticious. There's a rich combination between catholic beliefs and ancestor's practics as shamanism (wich I think Julieta the healer and Bruno the fortune teller are) 3. You go ask every latino and there ALWAYS a family member nobody wants to talk about XD 4. We are very gossipy LOL 5. There is a strong sense of community. I think that is because all of Latinamerican countries suffer a lot of natural disasters and everytime something happens we come together and rebuild from zero (I'm in Chile. Every now and then we have earthquakes. The first thing people do is organize help for the needed) 6. We very diverse in etchnicities because we are mixed with our ancesters and also afrodescendents and white people. (Sorry if I'm not using the most sensitives words for this topic, my vocabulary is very limited on English) 7. We do make a party out of every event LOL (any time is good for some food, drinks and dance) 8. We don't leave the nest if it not necessary. As you can see Madrigal's live together, as soooo many

I always feel like reactions misunderstand one of the sad parts about Bruno. First being that the Grandmother Begged him to look into the Future. But more importantly, he left without TELLING anyone the Future. Meaning no one, not even the Grandmother knew what he saw. And he did it, to protect his youngest Niece, cause he knew everyone would take it negatively and treat her horribly because of it. He gave up his own life with the family, to becoming the Exile and Outcast everyone hates, to protect her from that life of torture and pain. It's so sad, as most people would not have done such a thing, even for a family member, but Bruno did.

Abuela didn't kick Bruno out of the house, did she? He chose to leave to avoid further drama. Abuela often gets all the blame for everything, and while she's deffo too harsh of Mirabel (and the others, for that matter), I don't think she's always the culprit. For instance, some people got mad at her for not allowing Mirabel to be on Antonio's family picture, but again Abuela has nothing to do with that, it's Mirabel herself who chose to stay away. Now it's true that Abuela didn't notice, but neither did any of the other family members, including Mirabel's own parents. At least that how I feel about it!
