They supposedly release them months before Halloween so it’s available to buy and watch at home for Halloween cause most people don’t go cinema on Halloween especially kids they’re trick or treating. But they should just do both at the same time

I honestly never understood why they release the films SO far ahead of time. I understand wanting the movies available for at home viewing, but movies go onto streaming so fast nowadays. a film released in September at least can end up on streaming by halloween time. Plus, personally, when it’s October i always have a huge desire to go out with friends and do “ spooky “ activities- if there’s a scary movie in theatre’s we’re there. But in October there are NEVER any scary movies that we want to see!! i know this is long but i really just wish companies would release spooky movies actually during october 😅

@gabrielleporter553 While not the biggest reason (because I think it was also just a great movie!), i think that's also why Beetlejuice 2 did well! It was released in September, close to Halloween! If WB released it during the summer, it wouldn't have done as well IMO

When they scheduled this, they didn't know how the other movies would do. Oppenheimer is a serious historical film. Everybody thought Barbie would be for young tween girls. Theoretically there's a lot of audience that would pick Haunted Mansion as a fun non-gendered comedy. I suspect as they got word about how audiences were responding to the other movies, they cut their media buys to reduce their losses.

The problem with the film is that it wasn't scary. It had big budget special effects but was basically a mild Disney Channel film designed to be as inoffensive as possible. It was not a horror movie. It was just a mystery movie with ghosts, ghosts which weren't scary. It seemed like it was aimed at a younger audience but was advertised like it was a big mainstream film.

OK as someone who is a fan of the ride It has some scary moments in the beginning, but once you Leota, it gets all silly and now you’re surrounded by ghosts having a good time you have a bit of a scary moment in the attic, but other than that, you having a haunting great time so realistically, it needs to be a scary movie for the first half Just for it to become silly ghostly fun in the second half and I guess that’s the essence of the ride. It has an element of scaring you start looking.

I second this. The production literally had Lasse Holstrom (Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat) directing but then went under a month of reshoots directed by Joe Johnston and cost between $120-133 million to make. All for a movie with a very generic fantasy plot and bland characters. Which sucks imo since some of the costume and set design had a decent amount of effort put into it.

The trailer had me SO excited for the film. Showing the ballet scene (which is 100000000000% without a doubt the star best scene in the film) mixed with some action and the badass version of the OG Nutcracker score… ugh… brilliant. The film lived up to none of that. Save for the ballet scene.

Disney overthinks everything into shit. Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There's no such thing as fun for the whole family," and he was right. A scary movie has to be scary and an expensive, FX-heavy movie has to be inventive and original to be memorable and successful. We've all seen effects. They have to show us something new for the audience to care. Disney execs are choking the company into a stupor.

I saw this movie on Disney+ last year and thought it was fine tbh. I loved the first Haunted Mansion movie as a kid, so I didn't understand why this movie even needed to exist and didn't rush to go see it in theaters. Still, it was better than I expected, though that might be a product of the already very low expectations I have with live action Disney movies. As an aside, while I agree that there are too many side quests going on, I actually did like the parts with sea captain ghost. Somewhere in the convoluted script, there's a great short film about the main character helping this ghost get back to the sea he's been yearning so long for.

i really feel like last year was a big wake up call for Disney. even if they didn’t know how well Barbie and Oppenheimer would do, they still thought that just because they were Disney it automatically meant audiences would choose their remake over the comeback film of Chris Nolan and the passion project of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. the Barbenheimer trend was unexpected but these films still had so much hype even before the trend blew up. but Disney thought they would be more successful simply because they were Disney. and it was a narrative that flooded into a large portion of their movies since 2019. hopefully, with the new direction of the MCU, they’ve finally learned that a name isn’t going to carry them to success anymore.

Halloween has nothing to do with it. Horror movies are released outside of Halloween all the time, and you can’t even ride the original version of Haunted Mansion at Disneyland during Halloween (it’s already dressed up for Christmas). I really like this movie Its far better than the first one, and does actually do interesting things Like right off the start, “oh this house is haunted? nah we are Leaving!” Just like the old eddie murphy standup bit So, why cant they just leave in this one? *The Ghosts Will Follow You Home* I love the reality bending the house goes through as the hauntings get worse- its always a little silly when some haunted mansion films have these houses be utterly ludicrously huge beyond reason I also like that they have one of the main themes be about grief and depression Dealing with being on the verge of outright suicide even Vs the original film, eddie murphys character journey is just….spend more time with his family. Which he does spend a lot of time with his family he just works a little to much, thats not enough of a character flaw nor does it in any way tie into whats going on in the film The movie even perfectly sets up an emotional gut punch towards the end with the cat I love the idea of “ghost winks” as everyone talks about how “oh my mom always loved hummingbirds and i see a hummingbird when im sad i know its her!” And the payoff that the cat that keeps showing up at his doorstep every day he goes home is named *Tater Tot*, his wifes favorite snack (and ultimately what sadly got her killed as she went to go get some) is such a great emotional payoff that hits you in the feels And im gonna say it….im gonna defend the product placement mentions Yes, really. Why? Because everyone i knows talks Exactly like that When someone says they are going to get ice cream, they say ice cream But if they say they are going to baskin robins, theyll fuckin say baskin robins Everyone i knows sits there and laments that ya i shoulda cancelled my subscription to amazon Or that yes i bought that at cvs Is it product placement? Considering how Guillermo Del Toro was working on his own Haunted Mansion adaptation that was supposed to have the Hatbox Ghost as a central figure before it got scrapped, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Hatbox Ghost being the main villain and his backstory were elements from that scrapped Del Toro version that somehow got carried over into this new version. Would explain why the backstory of the titular mansion feels so convoluted. I feel personally it would’ve been better to just have had Master Gracey’s backstory and cut out the Hatbox Ghost’s and the character and just have it be Ben and Master Gracey learning to let go of their grief of losing their loved ones and moving on.

I always feel like these ride-based movies are destined to tank (pirates aside). Unless they’re actually marketed as new, fleshed ideas to international audiences. I had no idea this was based around a ride, I thought it was just a lazy name. How am I supposed to know about a ride in Disneyland? Haunted Mansion, Tomorrowland, Jungle Cruise… they sound like comedies of their genres. Like “scary movie”. The names are so basic and naked that there’s no mystery or character. It reads like a running title that was never changed. Disney either had to provide context to int. Audiences OR make it clear these are franchises that the audience will find it worth investing in… starting by giving it a name with an ounce of personality … pirates having “curse of the black pearl” meant the movie was clearly to be franchised, but gave a hint on narrative being a key component. It meant to me, as a non-Disney goer that there is a movie about pirates in the cardigan who are cursed by a mysterious black pearl. It’s really that simple. Pirates of the Caribbean on its own is nice but there’s no intrigue. It’s like saying “pirate movie” In fact, I went all this time not knowing it was a ride at Disneyland. I thought it was just a fresh concept. Silly me, how could Disney have a fresh concept! If they named Haunted mansion something like Haunted mansion: terror of the hatbox man Or something else that signifies its - kid friendly - not a mock of the horror subgenre - not cheaply named - has a narrative As far as casting goes, having both Wilson and Devito genuinely made me think that it was a comedy of the genre. The colour in posters affirmed that it wasn’t scary at all, perhaps kid friendly, but it was a whimsy time. Which made me not want to see it - I’m neither of those audiences

I also think if there wasn’t the original 2003 movie I think it might have been a little better received since a direct comparison makes it apparent that it doesn’t really hold a candle to that movie, at least in my opinion. I think it could have actually been something really good but it was still fine overall.

As someone that deeply loves The Haunted Mansion Eddie Murphy movie, I’m glad this slop of a remake has warmed people up a little bit to the original Eddie one. I found the plot of the remake boring and predictable, even cliche. Not to mention Disney really shooting themselves in the foot with having Jared Leto in the cast when it was well known by that point how many bad things Leto had done to receive bad press to the movies he was included in, helping to cause the movies to fail.

The one thing I liked about the new Haunted Mansion movie was it's portrayal of Grief and Loss. My Mom passed away 4 months prior to the film's release. When I watched how LaKeith Stanfield's character and the young boy (I forgot his name) discuss and handle their grief, it was refreshing to see that on screen and helped me cope with my own loss since Grief is often seen as kind of a taboo subject that SHOULD be discussed more openly. That being said, the points brought up in the video were the same issues I had with the movie. If Disney stopped being afraid of pushing the boundaries for a minute and had let Del Toro direct with his original idea (and with a release date around Halloween), the film could've been very successful.

It seems to me that 99%of all the failed mega projects is the fear of paying for decent writers. If you have interesting stories and characters people can care about you cam make so much of this work. But most of these giant flops have nonsensical plots and idiotic mannequins instead of characters people can root for. But the corpo executive idiots who are just glorified accountants don't know a story from a hole in the ground. So screw the whole Hollywood system. It's just a sinkhole of incompetence.

I still despise how the hatbox ghost was portrayed. Casting Jared Leto was bad enough, but taking an iconically creepy character like that and making him a generic monologuing villain just felt insulting. I don't know how Del Toro would have handled him, but I'm sure as hell he wouldn't have been spouting exposition all the time like a damn audiobook. Just let the visuals and atmosphere speak for themselves, the audience doesn't need everything spelt out for them.

I think this movie was the definition of a “death by trailer” movie. As soon as I saw the promos that seemed to be pushing lame CG effects and cringy humor over actual spooky vibes, I knew it was gona be awful. Honestly I do think a new good Haunted Mansion movie could exists with fans that would see it and make it popular, but it would have to be an actually spooky horror movie that focuses on impressive practical effects and dark humor (something like the original Hocus Pocus or Addams Family), over cheap looking CG and forced celebrity cameos. And I sadly don’t see Disney putting the effort in making any movie like that any time soon…

As a huge haunted mansion/phantom manor ride fan I was really happy with the Easter eggs in this movie. I actually prefer this movie to the Eddie Murphy one (even though I do enjoy the Eddie Murphy one too) I just wish it stayed darker, Disney needed to not be afraid to keep it actually haunting. What’s amazing about the ride is that it’s a perfect blend of fun punning whimsy and spookiness with some genuinely scary bits. This films climax and cgi was the main disappointment for me but before that I was quite happy being along for the ride. The photography and proving ghosts to be real could have been a really fun main story line alongside a ghost host trying to keep the ghostly world a secret and scaring them away or something, to then have some kind of amicable agreement at the end would have been a fun way to look into the characters and explore their interactions and more of the mansion itself

The ride is my favorite theme park ride ever, and I admire an attempt to make a more accurate adaptation of it...issue is I think the set design and costume/make-up work in the 2003 movie is a lot better anyway. To sum it up, the 2023 movie feels like it was filmed on a set whereas 2003 feels like it was shot in a real haunted house, and that's baffling to me when 2023 is trying so desperately to appeal to fans who know how much small, authentic detail the ride has

As a HUGE fan of the Haunted Mansion (the ride + books) I'm so disappointed that we never got Del Toro's Haunted Mansion. The problem with both of the movies is that it focuses way too much on the human characters (who are usually kind of boring imo) and doesn't do anything particularly interesting with the ghosts. The ghosts (specifically the important ones like Constance) are always treated like background characters and/or joke characters. Both movies feel more like generic haunted house movies with Haunted Mansion cameos, and they don't really take advantage of the iconic characters or moments from the original ride (in my opinion). Tldr; The movies are bad (in my opinion) because they don't put enough care into the ghosts themselves, and the Muppet version is currently the best Haunted Mansion movie because it feels like a sincere love letter to the source material.

I wish they had made a Haunted Mansion series on Disney+ instead. 6-8 episodes starting with the first ghosts and focusing chronologically on one story each episode. Like the Duelists, Constance, The Ball. madame Leota. and maybe a few others here and there . or the hitchhiking ghosts----that is if they really wanted the ride to be the center. Otherwise they could have just started fresh and totally begun new-with no connection to the ride but originality isn't in vogue at Disney right now.

Although, I admit the original would've been the better movie out of the two if it scrapped all of the subplots revolving the family characters and just focused on the goth romance between Sarah/Elizabeth and Master Gracey. I still don't get why the movie didn't come out in October. It would've made more sense for it to come out then.

Besides both “Haunted Mansion” movies being terrible and unnecessary, Disney seems to forget the ride only exists in the USA and Japan. Disneyland Paris has the Phantom Manor with its own, exclusive storyline. While Hong Kong Disneyland has Mystic Manor, which is not an enchanted (but not haunted) house. This was done to give those parks their own identity. So unless a “Haunted Mansion” film was great, akin to what Del Toro would have done, there was no audience. As there were not enough people in the world with nostalgia for the ride.

@@ChienaAvtzon in the case of Mystic Manor it was actually for cultural reasons; I don't know the exact details but basically stuff like ghosts and zombies don't go over well with Chinese audiences (I know HK and China are different but when we're talking culturally the distinction doesn't matter as much). I know that kind of sounds like bullshit, but I'm more inclined to believe it because of Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody, a (apparently cancelled?) Castlevania mobile game for Chinese audiences. The explicitly-undead enemies from the series were changed to other things for that game; the zombies were changed to Cthulhu-lookin' guys called Creepers, and the various types of skeleton enemies were all changed to anything from stone demons (the Dry Bones-style invincible Red Skeletons) to machines (the Bone Pillar and Spittle Bone enemies) to nonspecific noseless humanoids (the Skelerang enemy) to anthro hyenas (the Skeleton Flail enemy)

A much simpler Haunted Mansion movie plot that doesn’t require excessive exposition to explain why the characters are in the mansion could easily revolve around a group of teens to mid 20 year olds messing around and breaking into the notorious local haunted house (mansion) out on the edge of town. Like boom, easy explanation as to why the characters are there and no reason for them to ever leave. (Which by the way is one of my biggest gripes with the 2023 movie. Like why tf would you have a Haunted Mansion movie where the characters constantly leave the setting that is literally the title of the film? So dumb) They get trapped in the haunted mansion and have to fight for their lives and escape or join the other 999 happy haunts already there.
