Disney's Lorcana Card Game Review

TBH, I am drawn to TCGs but I realize it's a money sink. I can experience even more fun and satisfaction for fraction of a price with LCGs and board games.

I’ll stick with LCG’s. I gave up on TCG/CCG’s long ago, and refuse to play any. It’s just a money sink when it’s all said and done, even worse so if it becomes a dead ccg. It really hard to compete with Magic and Yugioh IMO, but let’s see if they allow this to flourish or flounder.

I agree. I recently got into Netrunner and my bro is getting Arkham horror. Also LCGs are more balanced, no OP cards that can decimate your deck.

First of all it was good to meet you at Gen Con! Thanks for taking a picture with me! I got away from CCG's/TCG's many years ago and switched to LCG's as I prefer that sales model better. I do not enjoy chasing cards anymore. I work part time at my FLGS, so I did get to learn and try Lorcana yesterday in order to be able to teach it to our customers. We have our first big Lorcana open play tonight! My first impressions are that Lorcana was more interesting than I thought it would be. However, coming from Marvel Champions and LOTR LCG and many years of playing Magic in the past, the game felt very basic. Concerns I have heard from other channels was that once you have been inking once per turn, and then eventually play your hand out, you are essentially top decking pretty much the rest of the game. Since you most likely have enough ink to play almost any card you draw, there really is little decision space. I felt that way after playing the game. I won pretty easily, but at the mid to end game I was just top decking and playing one card each round and then questing with everything. There were very little decisions for me to make compared to the early game. I am sure as the game develops it will improve, but my first impression was it was very basic, but maybe a good intro game for people coming into the hobby. Sorry for the long response but since there are a lot of questions around the hype of the game, I figured I'd put in my 2 cents for those who are curious.

It was great meeting you too!! Curious if you were playing the starter decks? If so I totally agree with your top decking concern. With deck building that concern pretty much goes away for me!

@@NelsonAllOverCards Yes it was the starter decks. So that is good to hear. Probably some deck building would help. Kind of like playing pre-con Champions decks. Most aren't great until you tune them.

This is the review I was looking for! I want a more complex gameplay for a game that costs that much. I understand the IP holds value, but since i'm not a disney fan, I think I'll pass. I don't want bunch of expensive cards sitting in the shelf because I got bored of it eventually. Also, if you like LCGs, Netrunner is supposedly a very good game.

I'd like to give the game a go, but I can't support any game that involves random chance on what I get in a pack. I'll stick to my NeXt Evolution box this weekend where the only random chance comes from Domino.

I just picked up my NeXt Evolution box and saw that two of my local FLGS are doing Lorcana events. I had convinced myself that I wasn't going to play a TCG, but Lorcana has me intrigued. I think I'm going to attend the events and just see what it's about. You get a started deck and a few packs/promos so I figure why not. Just check it out and have some fun. Outside of the events, my stores are selling product at a 2x markup so I can't see myself buying anything outside of the event entry price right away. If I like them game, I may continue to buy when prices come down. But yeah, the logical side of me says, just play your beloved Marvel Champions and forget about Lorana. The Lorcana artwork is so beautiful though!

I may pick up a couple of starter decks to play with my wife but hold off for a while before jumping into local or competitive play. Lack of Supply killed Destiny, and that left me with lack of hope for this game surviving. Hopefully the Disney theme will be enough to keep it alive. I know my wife is going to love it

I want to play this game but like you I fear it will be out of stock. I wanted to get into one piece the card game but was only able to get one starter deck when it came out and then for months just couldn't find anything unless you bought singles on TCG player which sucks cause I wanted some packs and I fear it may be the same way. I think it's going to go out of stock quick and just hope they can keep up cause it sucks waiting like half a year before being able to buy boosters or decks at a fair price XD

I find it pretty stupid already the fact that they decided to release in Europe in 3 different timelines. First comes Germany, England etc then comes the second zone countries and finally the 3rd one around February. And they announced organized play especially in Greece will happen in autumn 2024, which means we will get all 3 or 4 sets by then at the same time. How can they not foresee the amount of hype around their game since its Disney?At this point Bandai did it better.

I like Lorcana and got my pre-order batch with a booster box, the 3 starter decks and a gift set. Really nice and on a side note, the companion app on your phone is lovely with a how to play, a way to keep your score and to organize your collection. That is absolutely marvelous.

I picked it up today. The game is such a disappointment. There are so few interesting choices and it's 95% a MTG clone. "Questing" doesn't feel like your character is going on a quest. And bizzare thematic connections happen constantly--like a stable horse swinging a schmitar. They shot for broad mass appeal with this game and it will succeed in that, and only in that.

My wife and I played a "Learn to Play" and a small tourney at our LGS this weekend and had SO MUCH fun. We just started learning Magic about two months ago, and now Lorcana has become our new obsession. I'm going to try to build her a pacifist deck because she's not a fan of attacking and figuring out how to resolve combat damages and stuff haha! But the fact that you can build a semi-pacifist deck is just a cool feature to me. Hope it takes off in a big way, but either way, we will be playing! :)

I'll most likely just play it sort of like I play MTG these days: just having a few theme or custom decks and leaving it at that. I've found that its much more rewarding to explore tons of TCGs/CCGs/LCGs than to get so invested in only a single game. No game can ever even come close to being as good as Android Netrunner, so they all technically are a waste of time and money in comparison. I didn't want that to stop me from playing and enjoying things for what they are, though.

Th graphic design of the cards (not the illustrations) feels old, the mechanics are a copy of MTG (mostly) and it's a T/CCG which is....bad :p Not for me :)

They are going to print and saturate this game to oblivion. Don't overspend. You may not get 1st edition, so if that doesn't matter don't spend over retail.

Interesting, I wouldn’t be surprised if they print more, but then again I could see them not in order to maintain integrity of the aftermarket. I think a healthy TCG probably can’t just flood the market with multiple reprinting and expect longevity All that to be said, I kinda do hope they print more so players can get their hands on it!

@@NelsonAllOverCards I think of it like MTG Core set 1-19. Maybe not, but I could see them doing that if the game stays popular. Disney is notorious for releasing stuff in duplicate. Just look at Star Wars figures :)
