Disney's Never Built Bonnet Creek Resorts

Brennen and I venture out to the oddly cold Orlando to check out what was supposed to be. Way back in the early 2000's, several resorts were to be built to complete an ambitious master plan just outside of Disney property. Bad timing took its toll on the hotels and most of them were never built according to the plans. Today we check out what happened and what's there now, to the Bonnet Creek Resorts.

The turkey sign was likely for a 5K that was being held soon or not long before you guys got there. Around Thanksgiving we call them "Turkey Trots". It was probably motivation for people to keep running :P

Great video. I've stayed at Bonnet Creek a few times, always great. I've long wondered about that odd empty lot on the eastern side. It has shown up on Google Earth for 10+ years and looks so odd. I always assumed that it was for waste, out of sight. Now I know the real reason. Cool

It's funny you would post this now. I was just in WDW a few days ago and drove past the Bonnet Creek entrance sign several times. I had never hears of it before and didn't know what it was. I legitimately just remembered and was about to google it when I opened KZbin and saw this video show up.

Great vid guys! I work for the in-house audio video company at those three resorts and it’s cool to see that long road of abandoned swamp land being featured. Being that we’re not real hotel employees they designate that (previously) empty lot for our parking. So I’ve had some real interesting long late night walks to my car on that strip. And no joke there are swarms of turkeys there sometimes!! Also, I got excited to see that you guys were tackling the bonnet creek resorts. They have a compelling history with the Disney company. Being an Orlando local I hear rumors/lore of the family that owned that property. They all pretty much give the same reason why that land is surrounded by Disney property and not itself considered within the lines. They share a sense of “FU DISNEY” it’s quite comical but would love to have you guys do your awesome research and maybe defunct or validate this. Great vid guys!!

I'm an Uber driver in Orlando, and I do rounds to this area occasionally. I had no idea about this abandoned plan. You only see a string of hotels and no traces of an incomplete project. Thanks for this informative video.

I have stayed at both the Waldorf Astoria and Hilton Hotel. They are both my favourite hotels to stay in for visits to Walt Disney World. Bonnet Creek Resort is the best place to stay to enjoy Disney but also have a break from it when in your hotel.

My dealings in Florida are primarily limted to Palm Beach County, mainly around the area of West Palm Beach down to Delray Beach. Jake.. All of Orlando is swamp lands. That is why there are retention ponds and canals everywhere. Swamp does not prevent development, we build up the land anyway.

The land they chose to develop on had portions that were more suited for development than others. While it's certainly possible to develop swampland (which I never said it wasn't), it sure costs a lot and was probably impractical in this case when they had suitable land elsewhere.

Hey Jake! Love all your videos. I know you were just down here, but you should look up what we call in Orlando the "I-4 Eyesore". It's a legendary building that is 70% complete, which was built for a company called SuperChannel Television. It's one of the tallest buildings in the local area. It started construction in 2001, and was just left unfinished overlooking the local highway for 16 YEARS. It has become a local legend- spawning memes, costumes, and even people asking for Hurricanes and local authorities to knock it down, while the owner "promises to complete the project" every couple years.

I've been following WDW and the Bonnet Creek area since 1999 when I first started to find satellite pics of the area. I have never heard that Disney is involved at all except that they had to allow road access to the property since it's landlocked by I4 and Disney I had read that Disney wanted the property back when they bought all the other parcels and the owners caught wind of what was happening and asked for too much. I'm involved in a fairly busy Disney parks forum and this comes up a lot because people are confused about this area. You have to go on property to get there but that the signage oddly changes. A few even have stayed there and wonder why they don't get on site perks like some of the other non-Disney owned Disney Springs properties. One thing I have read though is that their shuttle service pretty much parallels Disney's and they have buses that go to all the parks all day. Most off site properties drop you off at the TTC and expect you to use Disney transportation to around and have a bus in the morning and a bus in the evening.

Have you noticed the number of Sheratons in the area? There's two in lake Buena vista and on on the other side of I-4 just a couple of miles down. And they are always booked. The demand is rising, people don't want to stay at the Disney resorts anymore and companies are taking advantage of their good neighbor program.

We stayed at the Four Seasons Orlando last year and it was amazing!! I think there’s definitely a market for upscale hotels cause people know they are gonna spend a ton at Disney anyway
