Renegade Nell is a new historical fan fiction series that had potential but Disney did everything it could (and always does) to spoil it...

Wouldn't it be likely in 1705 England that someone with superhuman powers be charged with being a witch?
@freman007
@freman007 2 ай бұрын
Although officially the last witch trial that resulted in execution was in 1682, at Bideford, but Mary Hicks, along with her daughter Elizabeth, was executed in 1716. So yes, witch finders would have seriously investigated a woman with superhuman abilities, even if they didn't charge and execute her.

What’s bizarre about witch trials is that if a person actually was a witch (or had some other super human ability) they could fight all the people arresting them and come out on top - or turn them all into frogs or something. Or vanish. So only truly innocent people were ever convicted of witchcraft - women yes but sometimes men too, even children sometimes 😢 But somehow the people conducting the trials were too stupid to be able to recognise this! Like, they believe witches could turn into animals for example. WELL THE PERSON WOULD HAVE TURNED INTO A MOUSE AND ESCAPED ALREADY THEN, DUH

@@kaykutcher2103 I like that it's always excused with statements like "this is isn't for you stop being an incel and complaining about it" but we can't have males portrayed as hyper competent in modern Hollywood movies or shows without a woman coming in and being either better or commenting on misogyny. James bond movies used to be sexist 100% and we don't make movies like that anymore because it's cringe, how is it not cringe when women do it now as well?
@marshmallowloaf
@marshmallowloaf 2 ай бұрын
@jaycollins2036 We don't really need "Males being hyper competent" in media, we just need media to make characters that feel like real people rather than walking PC statements. Women should be just AS good as men and vice versa. We need challenge and struggle, not this "Woman/Man defies all odds because they're God and everyone loves them so much we must dedicate 2 hours to showing off how great in comparison they are to everyone else". I've read fanfiction with more respect to its supporting cast than Disney has written in years. It's about time we bring back quality writing rather then writing power fantasies for specific audiences

Not Disney, but the one that amused me was Enola Holmes. There were tons of diverse extras in Victorian London and even a karate dojo run by a black woman, but Henry Cavil’s character was still lectured about how society was set up exclusively for people like him. Meanwhile, the actual Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes story that most dealt with racial issues, while quite forward-thinking for its time, would be considered _very_ offensive by today’s standard.

Something that confuses me about these shows which give old timey Europe the population diversity of modern New York is that they seem squarely foccused on Northern Europe. There's actually quite a bit of diversity in Southern Europe and Northern Africa around these time periods due to the Muslim invasions and complete rule of the Iberian peninsula up until the Reconquista. If they wanted black and Middle Eastern people in their medieval Europe shows they could just set them in Italy, the Balkans, the Iberian Peninsula, Morroco, Algeria, or the entirety of Spanish conquered America, which also gives them a reason to add native americans and mixed race people. Why ignore such a massive chunk of history in favor of altering the Northern European countries' history

Conservatives surrendered the arts to progressives. Progressives got incestuous, first in teaching their own, then in gatekeeping the industry. From then on, they spread from the colleges to the studios, and the rest is history. You have to remember that all their skill, all their experience as artists and writers, is now fundamentally based on "progressive politics good, everything old bad." All history, all morals or philosophy, all operations or management or skill, it's all from the cis-white-fascist culture of bigotry, and therefore literally anything they do to destroy it _ipso facto_ justifies itself. And, yes, that means you even get batshit takes like "stealing from people is actually good sometimes" and "kidnapping children isn't as bad as threatening people," because ideas like capitalist property rights and traditional families are anathema to these psychopathic monsters.

'Dumb' at the time would have been a synonym for deaf-mute, I believe; she would *not* have asked someone she was just having a conversation with, if they were dumb - someone who encountered a person that continually interacted without speaking, might ask another if the person in question was 'dumb'- _that_ I could understand. The trouble is, that if the characters (especially the lower class ones) spoke in authentic language of the time (which you can find in books/newspapers of the period), a modern audience would struggle to understand them, because so many words have changed meaning or are no longer used at all, although it grates on me too when characters in a historical setting use modern-sounding language.
@leirawhitehart1236
@leirawhitehart1236 17 күн бұрын
@dexine4723 Well, like the person above said, they could've used the word "daft," and it'd hold a better, more historically accurate meaning. In fact, I was expecting her to say "daft," and was surprised and rather baffled when she said "dumb," because that's _not_ the word she would've used in those times. They don't need to sound unintelligible to sound accurate, they just need to use words _somewhat_ correctly for the time, and they couldn't even do that. OP is correct, using the word "dumb" like it meant what it means today, when it didn't, was a stupid and ignorant move. And you could say it's just a small detail, but I think even a small detail like that, speaks to just how little they actually cared when making this, that they couldn't even be bothered to use language correctly for the time to make it feel even a little bit immersive.

This is a cultural phenomenon. The story-telling is simple yet engaging, taking us on an incredible adventure at a rapid pace. The characters are well defined and the viewer is left satisfied yet wanting more to come. A Masterpiece. Well, that's enough about Disney's original "Snow White". I bet Barry Norman is spinning in his grave over Disney's latest dollop of tripe

9:40 For an infinitely better approach to the subject of women joining the army in the olden days, may I suggest Terry Pratchett's 'The Monstrous Regiment'? And it takes place in Discworld, not real England, so you can indulge in enjoying the fantasy plot without actual history getting in the way. Then again, it goes without saying that Mr Pratchett had a much better knowledge of history and story-telling than the whole of Disney's writing staff put together.

The only thing I can add to that is it's Sir Prachett. The man was knighted, even personally did most of the work in making his own sword within a year of being knighted on the basis of "Well, obviously a knight should have a sword". Then he felt it a good idea to hide it because of the state Britain's in, even back in 2010. "It annoys me that knights aren't allowed to carry their swords," he said. "That would be knife crime."

Or, look up the real life stories of women who joined the army/navy in the seventeen hundreds and genuinely did go to war. There weren't many, but they did exist, and there were probably more than we know about, because many would have kept their identities successfully hidden. Hannah Snell is one famous British example, and disguised herself as a man for many years, but there were examples from all across Europe.

Instead of creating new and imaginative stories and worlds like they used to, Disney has outed themselves as bigger bigots than they used to actually be, and nobody is buying it anymore. modern writers and directors putting things like bullet dodging into their work makes me question how much they actually know. and I just did a check with an ai - and flintlock pistols moved at around 1.5 thousand feet per second. Finally, I'll just say this: it takes naught but a glance at population stats, to see that before 1990, Britain was 99% White. The "black history" of Britain coincides with the rise of the global billionaire elite ruling class, and one of their classic tactics for maintaining control over sovereign nations; open borders, chaos, and divide and conquer. They said they were gonna import more non-whites, and they did. From 1992 to 2002 they began, and that's when Britain ACTUALLY HAD a black population. Even more so since then. But just 30 years ago? Hardly any, eh?

@@Itsnotphobiatodislikeislam The UK wasn't quite that cut off from the rest of the world and you would also find a sprinkling of Arab/black/Asian sailors/merchants at the larger ports, and occasional black servants in the bigger aristocratic houses (brought over from plantation holdings in the West Indies), so in the rural setting of the show, the only possibly accurate non-white character was the black groom. Go a few decades further on, when newspapers became more widespread and you'll see the occasional mention of a 'Black' (capitalized), either in adverts, as a person seeking a situation as a servant/groom and describing themselves that way, or a person wanted for crimes. I've also seen records from the early and middle part of the century referring to black prostitutes in London (again, the result of freed slaves brought over from Jamaica etc, who were left with no other occupation). However, even if you put them all together, it would still only be a tiny, tiny fraction of the UK population, and you certainly wouldn't see them hanging out in a rural inn without being gawped at as novelties, let alone as senior members of aristocratic families.

It's to do with latitude, and to a lesser extent elevation. If I've guessed correctly and you live somewhere near Mount Mitchell you'll be around 15 degrees south of London - no idea where in the UK Johnny lives, but it doesn't make much difference - so the angle of the Sun will be higher throughout the year for you and the sunlight will be concentrated on a smaller area. It'll also have a smaller amount of atmosphere to penetrate before it reaches the ground, so less will be scattered by dust, air pollution and clouds. UV is most affected by pollution, which tends to accumulate at lower elevations - think car exhaust gases and the like - so at higher altitudes even on a cloudy day you can get a tan.

I did a Fanfiction where a Knight and capable Squire, returning from the Crusades, have to rescue the Knights sister and Fiance. The sister is accused of being a Witch, she's not, because she's inspired by Contortionist Sofie Dossi. So, a teenage girl who can accurately shoot a bow with her feet while balancing on her hands with a deep back bend just has to be a Witch to the Stupid Ignorant Peasants of 1200 France? Her ability to shoot arrows with her feet saves her life as she's able to hold out until her big brother saves her! So yeah, extraordinary Women would face Witchcraft charges.

Literally watched like the first 7-10 or so minutes and switched to something else. The lines were just a bit too cringey and acting wasn’t really there for me..😅

This is insane. But if they want to make a 1700's power fantasy similar to the early 2000's destruction simulators like prototype and hulk...at least just make it good. You obviously thrown believability out the window so just at least have it be fun to watch, cool set pieces and likeable characters

I can't even finish watching this... When it comes to bad, woke media; these historical fantasies are the worst. It's just so laughably progressive.

If a fairy in your stomach gives her super powers, I have to ask what happens when she farts? A hurricane? Does lightning come out? Would it eject the fairy and leave her powerless? Does it give a pleasant aroma? Would she go airborne?I have questions.

they take out the one thing people want from historical fiction, which is a certain level of factual accuracy to create the illusion of immersion and make the fantasy aspect pop out. everything happening now with diversity breaks the illusion and ruins the foundation of the genre. imagine if half the cast of shogun looked like this. (and then i unpaused the video right into jonny making the same exact point)

But she didnt go to war as a soldier, she went as a captains wife. They mention it like 7 times in the first episode, and even show her being rejected from joining near the end of it.

I miss the era of cinema when all we had to complain about was just bad acting, lack of sophistication and bad writing.
