Disney needs to allow the creatives run their departments again. Inside Out is a great movie, but even then the whole "____ but with emotions" trope was getting old and Elemental looks like an even more tired take on it. I guarantee if "Up" or "Wall-E" were pitched today, Disney executives would have thrown them out, because they don't have what people like Bob Iger thinks would appeal to people.

@Alexlestat he was, but John Lasseter was still at Pixar, so he was able to protect Pixar's identity until they found a very feeble excuse to fire him. Iger's head started inflating around 2015 and he started taking the idiots on Twitter seriously (not to mention Kathleen Kennedy's slow and steady destruction of Star Wars), that's why nothing feels authentic anymore, all the stories at Disney have to be approved by committee and have to have a checklist of things in them before they can be made. And I used to like Pete Docter, but he has next to no creative control, he's a sellout. It doesn't matter though, I'd put money on Pixar and Disney Animation merging into one division within the next 5 years, Disney doesn't have infinite resources to spend on 2 separate animation studios if only one of them is making a profit.

@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 I had completely forgotten how Lasseter was the backbone of Pixar until he was outed. But yeah I 100% agree with you. Funny how the only thing keeping Disney afloat is their parks while they're literally burning everything else to the ground..

@Alexlestat even the parks are coming apart at the seams (literally, if you look closely at the monorail supports and more than a few rides seem to be in desperate need to maintenance). Plus the billion-dollar Galactic Starcruiser lasting barely a year and a half, and the price of everything going up in general (especially food and electricity), I'd be surprised if the company as a whole was breaking even right now. Plus they're going to eat the cost of Hulu soon, so that's another strike against them.

The thing that bothered me the most is how Disney just released Pixar’s original films like Soul, Luca and Turning Red straight to Disney Plus without a theatrical release, while Lightyear was the only one that made it, because it’s part of Toy Story. 1:30 its disneys fault, actually. disney sabotaged the end of its 2d era on purpose, giving zero advertisement to films like treasure planet and atlantis because they _planned for them to fail._ the reason was because 3d animation wasn't unionized, and hence was substantially cheaper than union 2d animation. The reason I'm not excited for Elemental is because it goes for the most cliché type of pairing in these types of stories, the fire/water one. It's been done to death. I have mixed feelings for elemental. The cliché jokes were expected, but a of course they’re kind of mandatory to have element jokes in a movie about elements. Then there’s the animation. Pretty unique considering there’s a lot of squash and stretch added in and I think it looks amazing. When the movie comes out, I hope the story isn’t TOO predictable and the overall characters are likeable and the movie as a whole should be bearable to watch.

We talk a lot about audience fatigue. But I also think there's creator fatigue. And the reality is that Pixar has, I think, has burned through a lot of the novelty of their house style and the sort of stories they're famous for telling in that style. But that house style is also something they're incredibly strongly associated with. It's one of the curses of branding. It's only really notable to us BECAUSE of Pixar's reputation for hitting it out of the park for so long. If this were some other studio, we'd just shrug our shoulders. But it's not, it's PIXAR so we assume there must be some reason other than just . . . they've mined out their vein of ideas constrained to their current model. So what do they do? They try different things. They try developing niche or unusual ideas. I mean, I really liked Onward. Turning Red was bold if nothing else. And I thought Lightyear was merely okay, not at all hateable or bad. But I also agree these aren't the sort of movies that turn everyone's heads and get them to plant their butts in theater seats.

Disney is playing it too safe with their animated films right now. The whole purpose of Pixar was that it was experimental! Some of the most successful Disney movies to date were movies that they had not assumed would be popular. Sony and DreamWorks are experimenting right now and giving creatives the reigns and it *shows*. Disney isn’t seeing this lack of success for the opportunity that it is, they have a chance to do something very original because the audience is ripe for it, they just keep shooting down great ideas for the sake of playing it safe. Let’s hope that when they start feeling it in their pockets, they do the right thing and hand the torch to the creatives instead of having people like Iger crunch numbers and make their studios suffer more.

That stemmed from the leadership - Lasseter, Bird, Stanton, and Docter. They were committed to the artistic vision of their projects without getting caught up in the business and politics side of the Disney partnership. They were creating original, heartfelt stories that people had not seen before, and were able to captivate mature audiences as well as children through the portrayal of complex emotions and relatable situations. I personally loved the movies they released over Disney+ during the pandemic - Onward, Luca, Soul, and Turning Red, and I think judging their public reception based on internet release does them a great disservice. Where the studio has faltered has been the cranking out of sequels in order to appease the Disneyfication of their IP, the desire to franchise their characters and make an easy buck off of beloved titles from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The lore of Pixar is that the main directors got together over coffee one day in 1994 and developed story ideas together to get things rolling once Toy Story was in production. Knowing that they had struck gold, they wanted to roll out new ideas to pursue to keep the studio rolling ahead, so they came up with the premises for various titles that would soon follow: A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, and Wall-E resulted from that one sit-down they had together. That sort of long term brainstorming has not really been replicated since, and all those directors involved have moved on. There's a plethora of new additions to the Pixar roster, but that sort of creative freedom to bring new characters to the screen appears to be lacking. Outwardly, there doesn't appear to be team collaboration between the production crews anymore, which may be due to the way their office structure is set up, or the hand Disney execs have in the preliminary stages for greenlighting new titles and setting the release dates, or the shift in the workplace to have staff working remotely due to covid. In any case, that has led to a change in the way these films are being written and animated, and the rise of streaming platforms has cut into the box office draw they once had. Plus, when you have movie property that is family oriented in an age where the cost of buying theatre tickets is prohibitive for many households, and the patience of waiting for these titles to make their way to your subscription services online saves you money, of course the numbers are going to be less impressive than the releases that came in the early 2000s. Pixar isn't the only animation studio struggling in the era of online streaming.

I hate that Disney is basically forcing Pixar to make these films so cliché when it comes to story telling, meaning giving toys, elements, and emotions life. Not that it’s bad or anything, it’s just feels worn out, I love those films with all my heart, it brings me nostalgia. I was excited to see that Pixar tried something new with “Luca” & “Turning Red”, they brought some new story to the table and that has shown potential with Pixar with their new animation which I adore. It reminds of stop motion and clay animation movies like “Coraline” and “Wallace & Gromit. Disney is limiting Pixar’s potential to only film old concept’s that were already used before. I’m gonna watch “Elemental’s” because I know Pixar has a lot to offer. They need the freedom to express their creativity fully, instead of doing the same old thing with the likes of “Lightyear”. In my opinion, Toy Story 4 had pretty cool original characters, but imo instead of being a major franchise installment, I think it should’ve been a spin-off special, film, or miniseries focused solely around the new characters (and maybe Bo Peep) instead of being another story about Woody and his gang.

If they really wanted to expand the Incredibles, then why not a prequel show called "Mr. Incredible"?. It could take place in the "good old day", show how he met Elastigirl, meet other Supers, learn where their powers came from, etc.

Yeah he mocked Frozen 2 but that movie actually understood what was needed to expand in the success of the first one, the story had a proper conclusion and in several aspects was narratively more interesting than the first one. Ironically the fact that was such a solid end means we’re about to see a Toy Story 4 type of unnecessary sequel but hey, gotta pump that merchandising. Other studios have either nothing to lose, or where build with bolder, edgier values like Dreamworks. Disney and Pixar are stuck in their cookie cutter limitations and it shows.

I’m a little conflicted on Elemental. On one hand, I actually like the idea of a movie that takes place in a world of sentient elements, but on the other hand, it has a lot holding it back such as the unoriginal plot, the comedy that doesn’t land, and the ugly character designs (ugly to me at least). I’m kinda hoping that the movie will at least be decent, maybe even subvert my expectations and turn out to be amazing, but I won’t be disappointed if it sucks.

When this video talks about Pixar's "sequel era" in the 2010s, I still feel as if "Inside Out" has been unfairly erased. Has it become fashionable to hate it now? Is it fated to sink into the surrounding quicksand of the mediocrities around it? "Inside Out" is special to me, not only for its sharp script and outstanding voice cast but for its being the first, and so far the only, Pixar film to focus on a female nonhuman (Joy) as protagonist, and to give a welcome spotlight to her budding friendship with Sadness. How many other American animated films have showcased a friendship between female characters? Ghibli films do it all the time, but here in the US, animated buddy pairs have always been boys, with the exception of "Inside Out" and, to a lesser degree, "Turning Red." Maybe this doesn't matter to everyone, but it matters to me. Nonetheless, I agree with the video's overall points. Sequelitis and Quality almost never coincide. Disney/Pixar will become a joke if they don't course-correct.

Strange worlds is much better than people give it credit for (seeing it as bombing due to “gay agenda”) when that’s such a small part of the movie and probably the reason it was banned (foreign markets). It abandons a lot of the traditional format and could have been a breath of fresh air if not for Disney meddling

art projects/companies should be run by artists, not business people, at least in my opinion. disney was founded by an artist, after all. putting money above all else is a fatal flaw. if something is good, the money will come, you shouldnt feel the need to worry about it and snatch at whatever crappy money maker. maybe if the disney company cared about telling good stories and not just trying to make money, theyd stop freaking out so much. i mean, theyve definitely come out with a few good movies these past few years, so its not like theyve stopped entirely, but you can definitely feel the shell of the old way it was forming.

People: Why doesn't Pixar make original movies anymore? I'm tired of these sequels! Also people: I'll just wait for (insert upcoming original Pixar movie) to come out on Disney+. This is the problem with moviegoers nowadays. They complain about wanting more original movies, but yet when we get those movies they refuse to support them where it matters, but will instead go to see the next Toy Story movie or whatever sequel they put out. I'm honestly glad that Pixar is making another Toy Story and Inside Out movie because I'm genuinely scared that unless they start making money soon, they'll be forced to shut down. If getting a few more sequels means that we'll be able to keep Pixar, I would gladly accept and support anything they put out, both their original movies and their sequels.

I enjoyed how Cars ended with "Not everything will be the same. At some point someone will be better" with the fact that McQueen is outdated racer. Inside Out was unique movie and would work on it's own and we will have sequel from what I read. But what about it? Same thing but with older Riley or something? Toy Story too. I liked the ending of 3rd movie showing that people grow up and toys just don't get thrown away and find different owner. It depends on a movie if it's franchise liike or single movie like. I personally think that Pixar is single movie like type where you can think of a story that doesn't need to continue. You get everything in one movie and it's enough

To be honest, if I don't do any research I can't tell a disney and Pixar movie apart anymore and haven't been able to tell since the mid 2010s

We are also going through a recession. People could just be so done w spending money they would rather just wait for these movies to come out on streaming platforms they are already paying for.

Animation colleagues dont fall for the corporate loyalty trap in the naughts we called it geeksploitation. The quote that stands out most in my mind was: "We got a half pipe and a soccer pitch, but dont ever get caught using it."

In my own professional opinion, one of the reasons Pixar's failling is because they stopped using John Ratzenberger's voice in their movies. Pixar just ain't what it used to be without him and still will never, ever be the same without him, whatever way it is!

That producer didn't really save Toy Story 2. They basically scrapped the version she saved and redid the whole thing. So, in the end, it wasn't that important.

Pixar sequels today is basically the direct to DVD sequels of Disney. Loosing the character arc they have on the first movie and ruining the story by adding unrelated plots.

At least we know when all hope is lost for Pixar at least we can still fully expect Toy Story 95 posters to litter bus stops around the globe.
