Higher taxes, de-monopolization, criminal charges. Oh, that opening question was rhetorical?

The answer is obvious, just not particularly pleasant (for Disney) You see the same scenario everywhere in the US at different corporations. To actually solve the problem, it requires more structural changes But as the youtuber said "Capitalism is broken. We know this. Moving on."

As someone else who lived through 90's Disney, I totally agree we have circled back to the 90's. I am literately quoting my parents with my kids now: "Oh it's a Disney. We'll wait for it to came to the library"

I think Inside Out is the only one that I can see having a truly justifiable sequel as puberty does change how kids process their emotions. Moana 2 I'm trying to be optimistic about because I love the first one and I can see that there is the potential for there to be another good story in that world. Frozen 3 and Zooptopia 2 feels straw grabby, and Toy Story 5 just makes me sad.

Has disney forget that those hits exist BECAUSE they invested and took risk in those original ideas ? Like that how your able to make sequels in the first place! Also did people forget the Great Depression the stock will inevitably go down at some point !

Part of the reason the old school Disney Animated Classics felt so wonderful and special is because it took a while for them to come out. You had to wait a while between “Alice in Wonderland” in 1951 and “Peter Pan” in 1953 and then between “Peter Pan” and “Lady and the Tramp” in 1955 and then between “Lady and the Tramp” and “Sleeping Beauty” in 1959 and then between “Sleeping Beauty” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” in 1961 and then between “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” and “Sword in the Stone” in 1963 and then between “Sword in the Stone” and “The Jungle Book” in 1967 and then between…I think you get the idea.

I do think there's potential for Inside Out 2 to have meaning, because of the way our relationship with emotions evolves as we grow up. Toy Story 5 on the other hand... There wasn't even a reason for the fourth one.

The "We were going to do it as a series but it's good enough so we're retooling it into a film" had me twitching, hard. And maybe its because as someone who prefers tv to film, I hate this idea that some critics (and, apparently, entertainment industry executives) have of 'film good tv bad', but... Televission is not 'worse films', movies are not 'better television'. Even when we're dealing with serialized television, so the entire season is focused on telling a single story - like films are meant to be doing and why is Wicked being done as a Duology? - the two mediums are very different despite being and the sort of thing. There's a difference in what you can do, the sort of stories that work well for, a 90-180 minute thing designed to be consumed in a single sitting and a 6-10 hour thing with clear chapter breaks throughout where you can get up, stretch your legs, and contemplate what you've just watched - I'd probably analogize it to the difference between a novella (film) and a novel (a television season).
@Freak80MC
@Freak80MC 5 ай бұрын
I don't think I got the memo on films being designed to be consumed in a single sitting. I can't focus well enough for an entire 2 or 3 hour film so I usually watch it in small chunks lol
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 5 ай бұрын
@@Freak80MC As films get longer on average I'm starting to feel that, though more due to my bladder than anything else. If a film is 3 hours long, let alone 4, it should have an interval, or a designated 'take a quick biobreak' point for home consumption (be that streaming or blu ray), just like the 3-4 hour TTRPG sessions I play in do.

On the other hand I sometimes wonder why they aren’t doing what I‘d think would be a no brainer. Like, they have a certain Lin Manuel Miranda under their belt and they’ve put out staged musicals already. To have him write more songs for encanto and making that the next big stage musical I think would be the move. Last year they put out that Encanto at Hollywood bowl on d+ and you can see the electricity, the audience was feeling it.

Honestly, it’s been awhile since I’ve gone to the movies and I don’t see myself re-signing up for Disney+ and Max anytime soon. I don’t care how good the quality is anymore. I want a movie or series that is not a franchise. I don’t want another sequel, prequel, spinoff, reboot, requel or cinematic universe. It’s boring. I am not spending the little money I have for corporate content. I want something different.

the current state of Disney, particularly the animation side of things for me, is extremely depressing, like they have all the money in the world, they could take every artistically bold and risky decision they wanted and they just don't... like say what you will about Walt Disney, the man, and god there's so much to say about him but, even being a businessman too he pushed animation to its limits and innovated time and time again in his day, that man almost went bankrupt several times for the sake of not compromising the artistic vision of the thing... they're just so artistically bankrupt now, it's sad

I'm actually looking forward to Inside Out 2... even though the first one was a tight, self-contained story, the concept does offer quite a bit of room to explore other avenues, and the first one actually did give us a decent sequel hook (with the Puberty button)... I do wonder just how far they can explore this concept and keep it PG (or maybe Pixar could at some point try their hand at their first PG-13 film... it's risky, but Disney needs to take some risks if they ever intend to get out of the hole they're in). I also think Zootopia has a vast enough world that could be explored further (I'd have to see how much of that they do in the series).

Turning Red proved that they can cover these more mature ideas and do so in a PG fashion, so I have no doubt they can do the same for Inside Out 2. The real question will be if the story and character development will be good enough to justify the sequel's existence

I think that oversaturation is a problem. But the bigger problem is a lack of long term thinking. Let's say that the sequels have a better ROI. You should take that into account in the value of a movie that isn't a sequel. Sure, I might make 10% less on this, but I can make more sequels of this later if it's good. That's part of the value of the movie. It's part of the value of taking risks. You make a movie like say, iron man, and it might not make as much ROI as the live action remake of something. Or perhaps you create a massive cinematic universe. Refusing to take risks based on ROI is only a good short term strategy because wheny ou're making a live action remake of a movie that came out less than ten years ago it means you've tapped that well dry.

Honestly what Disney needs to do is have a meeting like they did when they decided on I think it was five Pixar films? Wall- e finding nemo, the incredibles and a couple others all came from one brain storming session. They need to do that. They need to bring in fresh talent for that. They need to crack open some more fairy tale books. Like, what about the three Billy goats gruff? I would love to see what Disney would do with that. There’s plenty of room for cute animals, it’s a fairy tale, it seems right up their alley. Or I know there’s plenty of Princess stories they haven’t done yet. How about the twelve dancing princesses? The Princess and the pea? Or what about new fairytales? Disney needs to get some new ideas. But they’re afraid to take the chance on new ideas now because a failure is a much bigger deal when you’re in a slump.

The Lion King 2 is legitimately great. (Though I think the best thing from that oversaturation era is the time a thing made the jump the other way - When one of Disney's cartoon shows got a theatrical film follow up and gave us the wonder of A Goofy Movie. And I'm saying this as someone who generally prefers tv to film here, and who rarely wants TV shows to get a film based on it)

While I'm not sure if Bob Chapek was the best replacement for him, I think the board was right a few years ago when they decided it was time for Bob Iger to go and that bringing him back was a mistake. Most people running an empire long enough are going to fall into the trap of relying on what's worked for them up to that point. It's time for fresh leadership at Disney with fresh ideas.

I don't think The Return of Jafar was ever going to be a theatrical release. The story I have always heard is that it was originally a three-part pilot for the Aladdin animated series re-edited into a direct-to-video movie (and you can tell with things like it fading into black after every 20 minutes and animation studios randomly changing)

Disney's sequel saturation issue reminds me of an early phase in Universal Paperclips.... Universal Paperclips is a game about an AI turning the universe into paperclips. Because that is what it was designed to do:maximize efficiency in paperclip production and distribution. It starts off with you making paperclips and selling them. As your efficiency increases, you unlock increasingly more complex means of convincing people to buy your paperclips in order to fund the process of creating more paperclips. This phase ends with you releasing "hypnodrones" which removes the problem of the AI being subject to human whims of money and life outside of paperclip production. (Phase 2 ends with you launching your first paperclip based spacecraft and becoming an interstellar paperclip factory, with the final phase being the collection and refinement of all matter in the universe.) It's a neat little game, with some unnerving lessons that corporate leaders should probably learn. (It's not realistic in detail, but the broad concepts of the game - ie, the idea of creating a superhuman AI with a singleminded devotion to fulfillng the production demands of some random corporation long beyond the point at which such production loses meaning is entirely plausible and entirely terrifying. Even more so than your traditional mindless "grey goo" type story, because there at least we have the possibility of reasoning a way around the problem and defeating it.)

As a kid who grew up on a lot of straight to dvd stuff, I feel like some of the old sequels get a bad rap just because they aren't polished Disney magic, but some of them have at least very interesting ideas. Like Peter Pan 2 having a story about Wendy's daughter living through the WW2 and being cynical with childhood magic because of the horrible situation. It was derivative, sure bu Some of the stuff feels a lot of organic then whatever that Wreck it Ralph 2 princess scene was.

It has been almost a decade, and the fans have already done every conceivable story with Nick and Judy. I assume it will just be a new case with a new villain, but I don't know what they will do with the themes of the first movie. I doubt they are doing a romance even though that's what fans have been obsessed with for a decade.

I will just say, what I remember is that it wasn't until former Pixar head John Lassiter was put in charge of all Disney animation projects that they yanked Toy Story 2 from the straight-to-video track. If I remember correctly, Pixar was going to stop working with Disney over things like what they were doing with TS2 (Which, as you say, was normal for all Disney-owned theatrical successes at the time), and part of the deal that came with Disney outright buying Pixar was putting Lassiter in charge. He immediately put TS2 back in the hands of the Pixar team. I also don't remember if the animation had already started but pretty sure Pixar went back to the story boards and started over, even if not from scratch.

Zootopia+ was actually really fun. It's basically just a series of shorts that amount to "Here's some stuff happening around the city while the movie was going on." This is part of why I'm excited for the new X-Men content coming out. X-Men '97's trailer drop yesterday made me so happy and excited - nostalgia bait with the returning voice cast (most of them) and character designs, but with better quality. Deadpool 3 has me excited as well, since we're getting more crossovers from the old XMCU. Then again, I've always been an X-Men fan more than anything else Marvel, thanks in large part to the X-Men animated series from the '90s. Introducing the X-Men characters into the MCU (ideally in their own branch of the timeline rather than the main MCU, but I know that won't happen) is the injection of novelty I want out of Marvel movies and streaming (along with Daredevil: Born Again, because that's looking more and more like the Netflix Daredevil's season 4, and I really liked the Netflix Marvel shows). In terms of the Disney properties, I think they do need to work on their animated films. I don't think sequels are the answer. I think switching up the formula would help a lot more. I also think at this point doing a 2D feature would be a novelty that would get people to the theaters. There are plenty of people with nostalgia for the hand-drawn films and animation of the pre-2000s that I think, paired with a good solid story, it could spark another renaissance. Not sure what the story would be - maybe The Borrowers, if they could get the rights? Have fun at Gally, Vera! I wish I were going, too!

Yeah, I definitely agree about that "feeling of deja vu", and frankly...I think it'll probably work out better than that 90s era (with box office performance rather than just straight-to-home video), but still far worse than they hoped, further burning the brand. I can understand why they're doing it: Disney's attempts at more original stuff (Elemental, Wish, most Pixar that got dumped on Disney+) hasn't exactly raked in the cash (Elemental did end up doing well, though), so they're making the stupid move of leaning even more heavily on existing franchises/IPs that have done well (the same reason they had the live action films, not the copyright BS that keeps popping up in some circles, that's not how it works). 8:50 Since you bring it up: I really liked The Marvels, thought it was a lot of fun and does a pretty good job with the characters. It doesn't live up to its potential on that front, but it does better than I expected, based on reviews. There's one plotline that doesn't work but leads to a fun conclusion (it's wacky, but I was entertained), just good fun. One of my favourite MCU films in a while (not better than GotG3, but probably more rewatchable, since it isn't so heavy). I am mixed on the main argument around 13:55 - I think if quality was higher, then the saturation level wouldn't be such a problem. That said, they did go a little too heavy and the overall broad vagueness of what is happening with the MCU, where it's going, and who is important has been a big blow. Talking about algorithms and "not factoring in the numbers going down", I wonder if the key to success is what A24 (or Blumhouse) seemed to be hitting on (and may now be blowing it by trying to do big franchises with The Rock): more mid-range films that have a lot of potential for profit by simply doing "rather well". More or less a "Moneyball" style: get pretty good consistent performers rather than relying on the sluggers (blockbusters), especially as it allows you to better round out your roster and cut your losses if a player (movie) is injured (does poorly at the box office). 16:22 Because that's the "businessman executive" mentality since Jack Welch ruined them decades ago/the shareholder became more important than God (so to speak): the entire purpose of business is to make the number go up so line goes up, and up by more than it was before. It's the insane capitalist mindset. 24:30 I've said it before, I'll say it again: COVID is definitely the thing that snapped me away from going to the movie theatre. As someone who lives in a small rural (and reasonably remote) community, I still feel weird in large crowds (even when my grocery store's really busy), especially if anyone's sounding sick (coughing, mainly), so the idea of sitting in a crowded theatre doesn't appeal. Add in that travelling to see a movie's a big chore for me (2-3 hr. drive 1 way, so needs to be a weekend or holiday, which has other problems), the higher cost of gas and food (part of the treat of going to the city for a movie included getting some fast food, since there's very little here), and other fun factors like weather (that drive really sucks if it's snowy, which can also mean a road closure, sometimes lasting days), and my bar for catching a movie in theatres is much higher than it used to be. I did see GotG3 while visiting family (totally worth it) and caught the latest Mission Impossible shortly after its release (right before Barbenheimer), but those are the only ones I've gone to theatres for since 2019 (maybe summer, maybe Christmastime, can't remember), and few others have really appealed enough. The Marvels almost did but timing didn't work out, Argylle almost did and then I heard reviews (definitely will watch it later), was considering going this weekend but I'm not sure what I'd even see. This is definitely not just a Disney issue, it's systemic/industry-wide.

Another problem with playing in the same franchises is that when they do try something new within established universes, it usually flops. Andor is a great example of that. So even trying new stuff in the same franchises seems to be futile. New - completely new - stuff is the only way forward, yet as with any new stuff there is never a guarantee that it will be successful, and they don't want to take those risks. So yeah, as you so aptly put it, it's a vicious circle.

I swear to god, I have no idea what I watched just now. It's half an hour of my life that I will never get back and I can't decide if it was worth it. It definitely escalated.... KINDA. Okay, so, maybe spoiler alert? IDK I can't think right now. It's 6x of about 5 minute features about the different side characters that we meet throughout the movie. It starts with Judy's parents seeing her off and then going on a rescue mission to save their baby who accidentally boarded the same train as Judy. It's that kind of show. There's one about the shrew bride that's like living with the cardassians, then there's one about the Weasel, the godfather shrew, chief Bogo and Clawhauser (that takes most of the credit for frying my brain and simultaneously made the whole endeavour worth my time) and the sloths, which concludes with the scene where Nick and Judy stop the speeding car with them in it. I'm not sure if I recommend it? Unless you feel the need to certify it's existence and make sure I'm not pulling your leg. I swear Disney lost their minds when they signed this off. Not sure who smoked what, but I need the number of their dealer. Stat.

Retooling the Moana show into a movie? Oh now I'm especially getting flashbacks to the direct to DVD sequels, in particular the Atlantis one, the Beauty and the Beast one, Cinderella 2, all of the shittiest ones that were clearly just a few episodes of a failed tv show haphazardly marketed as a movie.

well In love return of jafar and the king of thieves, though I do want to see more new stuff. I think Moana 2 is not a bad idea, that world is big lots you could do. Zootopia also I think could be good, but also kind of wish they had announced somthing not sequel based. Hollywood seems to love sequels and IP things, and yes lots of those are great, then again most of the time when something different is made people loove that and say yes more original stuff. Yes Barbie from last year was based off a doll, but it still was different and original in so many ways.

I'm only 10secs into a 30min video, but... I gotta say, as bad as it looks for Disney's creative decisions, Frozen II *is* by far the best Frozen... I don't really care about any other animated property of theirs (re sequels), but if the writers and directors of the next Frozen feel like they have a story worth telling, then I'd trust them, at least. Okay, I'll edit this if I need to after watching the actual video...

Like every corporation, Disney has to keep growing to keep shareholders happy (and more importantly the fat cats at the top of the corporation who get slightly smaller bonuses if they don't grow the company). Sequels seem like an easy and cheap(er) solution, getting rid of a CEO who earns the equivalent of a blockbuster budget is not!

It's kind of funny that this is happening to Disney specifically, since they used to rail so hard against home video releases and carefully curated the "Disney Vault" so that their new films and re-releases would feel special and not saturate their own market.

I think Disney is making a huge mistake in tying their streaming shows and their movies so closely together. I’m fine popping in twice a year to see what the various Avengers are doing, but if I need to subscribe to Disney+ to understand why one of the main characters has such a chip on her shoulder about Captain Marvel, I’m instantly less interested. It begins to feel like a job to keep up with the MCU or the Star Wars franchise when there’s so little breathing room between movie releases and then there’s streaming content filling in even that.

To this day I can go off on a rant about the frigging hunchback getting a 2. The story where everyone dies (or should of). Its a terrible movie and should of been left for dead. But the Moms who were buying it were buyiong these movies to babysit the kids not to watch them themselves. One reason for marvel burnout is they almost imediatly broke some of the concept they said they were doing. They said they would do Superhero movies in different types. Like a horror hero and a family drama hero. I loved the concept. We would speculate about ho would be good in what roles. I was rooting for Antman to have a dark family drama where he does hit his wife - you could retell that story and make it so much better. Then Antman came out and I gave up hoping. Every Mando fan Ive interacted with has expressed anger/disappointment at Bobba Fett and returning the kid to the story too soon. I doubt the movie will do well.

8:58 the Marvels is okay, they had some good bits but it still too much of a franchise movie, and wasn’t allowed to be its own thing . If that makes sense.

It's not that surprising Disney are just buying into already successful and established IPs because that takes zero creativity and that's about where Disney's capacity to innovate has been for some time. A string of remakes and safe bets are testament to that. It's not like they are the only studio taking safe bets but they are the most prolific and they did used to be cutting edge, once, so their fall is really obvious. I guess sequels take a LITTLE more creativity than remakes so that's something but none of this is about art. It's about money and, unless you're an accountant, there is nothing exciting here.

inside out would be less questionable if the y dammit changed the protagonist. Hell or make a boy the protagonist who learns to doeal with his trauma and maybe anger issues? A lot sequels could do to avoid sequel tiring, is making it anthologies like, not same thing again. lion kings had a reaso to exist, due different protagonists. And the series were fine, whats now uis that, like animation quality probably, and diversify, there wasnt really a disney universe crossover in one universe, which helped somewhat diversify. I dont think if you are a superhero brand thats way to forulatic.

I enjoyed the Marvels, particularly the elements from Ms. Marvel. But, like you said I learend to wait for Streaming. I almost went to see it in theaters to try to shut up the anti-woke/SJW/insert you least favorite toxic "fan" category. But I didn't.

Inside Out 2 is including mental health conditions as little emotion people. I would have been willing to give inside out 2 a chance this summer, if Pixar didn't immediately let anxiety and depression into the trailer from the get-go. I'm completely checked out on the concept of using emotions as a metaphor for mental health and it's an outdated pseudoscience to begin with. I don't care if it performs well because it's probably going to be used against people who don't fit that idea. Enjoy it if you want too, but I'm waiting for this to be reviewed. I have Nothing against Pixar fans, but this feels broken to me.
