Disney's Wish DESERVES Better

So I went to see Wish the other day, and despite expecting it to be terrible based on what I had heard. It really wasn't all that bad. Disney didn't serve up a turd. Here's why.

I've read that Asha was supposed to be the king and queen's kid and she found out that they were evil and wanted to stop them but didn't know how. After she wish on a star and the sprite came, they worked together to stop her evil parents and grand everyone's wishes. That alone is a better story and it can help Asha become a Disney princess and not a forgettable heroine just like the rest that didn't make or was on the roster before they were kicked out. Unfortunately I think that's what's gonna happen thanks to the film we have now. Any thoughts?

The movie would have been better if they kept the original idea of Magnifico and Amaya being an evil power couple. It´d have at least been something new for a disney movie. Also, if Asha was their daughter, the future heir of the throne, it´d fix so many problems in this story because 1) It would now actually make sense why she is the one who gets to hear the truth about the wishes 2) She now has a personal connection and stakes in the story which can lead to an interesting character arc when she confronts her parents in order to protect her people 3) We would get rid of some of the useless side characters. Asha´s mother and grandfather were basically non-characters imo.

Yeah 100 years is HUGE! Which only amplifies the fact that the movie is mid at best. If they had released this movie at any other time, it would be decent but nothing special. But since its meant to be their celebration of a literal CENTURY of Disney, its so much worse then it would be otherwise.

I don't see how having "Star Boy" as a love interest would work, because the character is supposed to be a representation the wishing star seen in tons of other Disney media. Thank you! “Not everything has to be Encanto” is the perfect way to sum up the hypocrisy of a lot of the comments I’ve been seeing. Is it some ground-breaking piece of cinema? No, but neither were the classic films if you were to pit them against today’s standards. I’ve seen Wish twice and loved every second of it. Yes, it’s a simple story that could have been more fleshed out, but I really didn’t have a problem with that. I’m also happy they went with this version of the script as Asha being the daughter of two evil parents and falling in love with a “Starboy” sounds terrible to me. Surprisingly enough, Magnifico was my favourite because I can see the fatal logic behind his downfall. Like me, he suffered a trauma in his youth that caused him to view the world through a lens of intense paranoia. Only Amaya truly understood that, so when the pressure from the people finally became too much, he acted in a moment of weakness. He’s the type of villain you can understand because he isn’t all bad. All this to say, the film did indeed deserve better. It probably won’t make the same comeback that Elemental did, but I will continue loving it regardless. 💜⭐️

I'd call that a really bad judgment call, which sometimes the internet is too good at doing. Sure, the film could have been so much more to make it better, but that doesn't mean outright the film is just terrible because the majority says it is. And I'd go even further saying it's not your opinion anymore, when you're basically saying the same exact thing everyone else is.

I love the movie as a Disney fan since the 80s (it has its flaws but not as bad in my opinion) but the circulated premise that it starts before anything Disney is a bit too general (and the Disney marketing is to blame for it). The movie is probably set in the 12th century and there are at least some Disney movies that take place before that. These include Hercules, Aladdin, Mulan, The Black Cauldron and at least two segments from Fantasia. In any case, Jennifer Lien and Chris Buck did specify that references to other movies are just Easter Eggs and not supposed to be seen as something more than that. I am OK with the star supposedly being the Disney star that has been travelling between different worlds/universes and seen by different characters but it seems that they did not intend it to be an origin story for Disney stories as a whole.

What annoys me about criticism towards the film is that people try to say the main character’s gripes with the villain are unjustified and that it makes total sense that the king should totally only grant wishes that benefit the kingdom even though it’s said in the movie that these people forget their wishes as apart of the process meaning they can’t make it happen themselves if not granted magically and also it seems like this benefit the kingdom is mostly going towards military strength(which while important not the most innocent to expend most the kingdoms magic resources on) anyway with only some exceptions to people think he is still granting all their wishes it’s not that he doesn’t have time to do it or enough magic just out of worry he is actively taking peoples abilities to grant the wishes on their time away from them aswell the equivalent is basically breaking the legs of kindergarteners and only giving wheelchairs to the ones who promise to help out military charity

Some people suggest a bittersweet ending, where Star ends up leaving. And, one of the original ideas was for “At All Costs” to be a love song btw her and Starboy (love you instead of promise you), which I thought made more sense. Plus, it’s magic-I’m sure they could have figured out some way to have it make sense, maybe paying homage to Ariel being a little naive in the Little Mermaid!

The problem if you ask me is the villain. They marketed him as a classic evil villain... When really he's just a heroic and kind albeit traumatized and narcissistic guy that has his repeatedly hinted complex background entirely overlooked when he literally gets possessed by a book. Disney has made great malignant narcissist villains before. Gothel. Frollo. The worst thing Magnifico does is temporarily crush a couple of dreams because he's possessed by a book. And he deserves the non-redemption terrible-ending destiny of a classic Disney villain? Are you kidding me?

Hollywood is having trouble doing villains. Look at Homelander. The production company are amazed that people started to side with him, but they humanised him with his backstory of abuse and then accidentally made a hero of him when he had to fight Super Butcher, Super Hughie, and Solider Boy simultaneously and he had to reflect and struggle, both being part of the hero's journey not the villain.

To be honest 100 years is a very huge milestone for such a company. A legacy that needs high-class treatment. To be honest Wish did not feel like the type of movie to celebrate such an anniversary. Also I think there should've been a Once Upon a Studio full length movie instead. I mean Wish is fine for some things but it isn't the type of movie worth celebrating such a milestone and it wasn't just critics who were giving this movie some filth but a majority of the audience see and knows what and where they went wrong. And as for the villain, the writers handled him poorly. Plus his theme song was just not right him. Speaking of the writers and artists, they had such better ideas for this movie and their plans were far more interesting. Plus as a bonus, there was even going to be and evil couple. I usually agree with you Smarty, but this isn’t one of those times. The story made zero sense from start to finish, the biggest being why literally anyone consents to give up their wishes to Magnifico at all. The heel turn for the king from slightly paranoid to evil made no sense, and neither did Asha’s personal motives to “welp I’m an activist now somehow”. Not to mention the Queen own turn to allying with the plucky band of diverse teenagers against her husband. I don’t know, a ton of the character motivations (not to mention the governance of this entire city-state) made no sense. Even Illumination films have better world-building than this movie lately. The whole thing felt phoned in. On the other hand, I think the animation style was actually the best part; the song lyrics were childish and unforgettable.

It is not a luma rip off. The creators said that they based it on Mickey Mouse’s face and Tinker Bell but to me it looks as if they were based on the goldfish stars from Disney’s 1938 cartoon short Wynken, Blynken & Nod. The star is the typical 5-point cartoon star type and it looks like a goldfish where every one of its five points corresponds to one of a goldfish’s five sets of fins (especially the point on its back is very characteristics as it acts like a dorsal fin). We also see the star swimming around in the air just like the goldfish stars in the 1938 Disney short. In any case, there have been other stars like the luma, including in Carebears and Dora the explorer.

That being said, it doesn’t change that it was designed for merchandise purposes in priority. It’s not the worst idea and I don’t hate little Star, but it’s the second “marketable little companion” in the movie and it’s magic doesn’t make sense. The idea of the shapeshifting starboy sounded much more interesting especially because it was possible to make him shapeshift into the cute little creature anyway. Heck, they could’ve followed some Ghibli trope and have a magic Starboy cursed into looking like a cute little creature enable to communicate and having Asha break the spell.

@@selmabm3409 The concept of the starboy and heroine relationship from the artbook gave me vibes of Haku and Chihiro from Spirited Away and indeed it has a very Ghibli feeling. Which is why I am personally content that they didn't go fo it in the end. Given that there must be at least one anime or videogame involving starchildren, it feels as if Disney dodged a bullet as people in general are ever so willing to come up with ripping off accusations. Even with the star, although the Nintendo luma was by no means the first animated star with a face and Disney had done it as early as the 30s, I am sure that there are people out there who do think that the luma was the model for Star. Nevertheless, if there is ever a stage musical adaptation wish (or live action remake) I do have a feeling that they will rewrite the story and bring back the starboy romance (as it will be inconvenient to have a main silent character).

But aside from the starboy, there were other things that still could’ve made the movie more interesting like the evil royal couple or having Asha being a shy bookworm or at least an epic final battle between Magnifico with his sceptre and Asha with her wand. I’m also aware that lumas aren’t the first animated stars, but the reason I keep thinking about it is because Rosalina’s storybook made me a lot more emotional than Wish. And I personally hope they don’t make it to a live action. I’m really tired of those. They spend gazillions on them, only for then saying that 2D animation is just too expensive. Instead, they could do what they did with Tangled, an animated series with a style different to the movie and new story ideas.

@@selmabm3409 Just to be clear, I personally did not mind the starboy concept. In fact, long before the first trailer, I actually thought that the star was going to be transforming into a star prince or something; I never thought that the star would just be a typical cartoon star throughout the whole movie. And just because others may have used star children concepts in other works, it does not mean that Disney could not do the same thing; there is no patent on such cliches and tropes and it should not be considered ripping off (too bad people are quick to jump to such conclusions). However, I was ultimately fine with the star in the final product. I am not its biggest fan but it had its own charm indeed. Plus, I do think that the star contributes a lot to the movie’s better performance in Japan where Wish is the second highest non local animated movie after Super Mario as it looks like an element of Kawaii culture. But I personally cannot say I liked the villain couple concept though. I know others find it intriguing but to me at least it feels as if it belongs to a different movie. The early version of the queen seems like a typical carbon copy villainess who is evil for the sake of being evil and there are better versions of this type of villainess in Madame Medusa, Yzma and of course Cruella. Their art looks interesting in printed form but for all one knows, she and her husband might have turned out to be far less compelling than what they are now. Queen Amaya is a strong character as she is without the need to be the girl-boss type. She and her husband pretty much interact and talk to each other as a married couple aged above 30 years and she is gentle, encouraging and loyal (until it reaches a point where enough is enough indeed) and we even get to know a bit about their background together. Disney has had Disney villains couples before in their movies, such as the Queen of Hearts and her husband (that many people often forget about) and (assuming that marriage or romantic relationship are not requirements) Rourke and Helga and none of them were as developed as Amaya and Magnifico. Then again I belong to an older age group so maybe younger people are more fascinated by the villain couple concept than what I am. Asha being a shy bookworm would have been the one millionth Easter Egg in the movie as it would have probably be seen as a reference to Belle and I can already see the backlash about how Disney is copying a better Disney heroine. As for the epic battle, it would have made sense if Asha was a trained sorceress, which she is not. Girlboss heroines get a lot a hate nowadays from the usual suspect yourtubers about how they are so perfect that they can take on a far superior opponent because of their girlpower. If Asha had been seen fighting Magnifico, an extremely knowledgeable and powerful wizard, with the wand that she did not even know how to use (and she is honest about it), youtubers would have basically been calling her another Rey (whatever that means exactly, I only saw the first of Disney’s Star Wars trilogy and only have a basic idea based on other people’s complaints). As for 2D, it would certainly look more artistic but would it get more people to cinemas to watch it instead of waiting for it to stream on Disney plus, which is what they do now? I very much doubt it. People love the old animated classics but only seem to go to cinemas nowadays to watch a familiar property or something from a known franchise and, with the exception of countries like Japan, avoid watching 2D animation in cinemas. A Boy and a Heron may be a masterpiece but it sells even fewer tickets than Wish does in western countries though it will still be far more profitable due to a smaller budget (seriously Disney, where does so much money go during production?). I do not care much about live action remakes either; I only watched some of them and only really liked 3 or 4 but that’s all it will probably be from now on from Disney: live action remakes, reboots and animated sequels since they will probably not be investing in animating new ideas for a while since Wish is not the box office success they wanted. Overall, I can see why people have fallen so much in love with the early concept art and the what might have been movie but, having personally been online since 1997, I have seen lots of Disney and non-Disney movies receiving hate and people proposing how they could be fixed or what deleted ideas could have been kept. Yet Wish is literally the only movie that I have seen so far where an overwhelmingly sizable proportion of those who post hate videos on it or videos about how the movie could have been fixed and how the early concept would have made it better have not actually seen the movie in its current form and usually just rely on trailers and what others say about it. It would be fairer if people actually watched the whole thing first before complaining. Some might even find that it is good enough as it is. Yes, it might have been better but it already has 9 award nominations as it is and deleted artwork may or may not have made it any better. Even if they had kept the early concepts, Tiktokers and youtubers would have found something else to complain about. It is human nature.

saw wish just last week so its fresh in my mind, i truly could not see why its getting so much hate as it was. i used to put it off as people hating on every recent disney movie before it releases since this happened with encanto, turning red, and luca for example, but it just feels worse. i agree it has flaws tho and it being marketed as a disney anniversary special movie put a ton of expectations onto it, but its not unwatchable as people are saying

The movie is far from beeing the catastrophy the critics are making it out to be, the film is preatty good, a -7 in my book the problem is that the plot and the characters feel very generic, very basic, Asha barely has a personality, she perfectly fits into the new "adorkable" protagonist mold. I liked the animation, especially the low light scenes, I only have two neat-peaks: first the textures were almost missing, it made the movie feel very flat, which was weird because I saw it in 3d, second Asha's hair moved weirdly, it was staying over her shoulder almost always, even when she was runing, I really don't know how that happened because I know disney uses a special program for hair that was developed for Frozen and Moana. I liked the songs but they didn't feel like Disney to me, and I found out why, the writters were pop compositers not musical theatre. Overall I couldn't recomand the movie but it wasn't a waste of time

I appreciate you giving Wish a fair chance. I don't think it's necessarily a good movie but i don't think it's disney's worst. Like you said, it's fine. What frustrates me is the baseless accusations about the production of the movie. Disney did not use AI for Wish in the writing department or the art department. You can just say that you don't like the animation style or that the writing was mediocre without throwing around those accusations. Not to mention the misinformation that Wish creates a "multiverse" with what are clearly supposed to be references. It angers me honestly because the film is not being treated fairly when it's literally just a FINE film. Not the first time Disney has put out a mediocre product.

I saw it in theatre on opening day (but the german translation) and I genuinely enjoyed it. It's not my favourite movie ever but I will also probably watch it again. Theer German songs aren't great but I do enjoy listening to the original soundtrack. People don’t get it, Disney went through development hell with this movie and all of you guys are giving it hate? It shows just how too high of your expectations are for Disney. In my opinion this movie was decent, my only criticism is that it would have been a bit funnier and more appropriate had Disney given Magnifico a glorious death instead of just being sucked into the mirror of his own staff. Also I think there was NO need to have any kind of love story to be asked for to be included in this movie, as don’t you guys not understand that not every Disney movie needs to have a love story of some kind? In my opinion love stories ruin the point of the movie. So to all the critics who are complaining that Disney should have added one, go watch some Disney films that already have them. Not every movie needs to have some form of love story. Also keeping Queen Amaya as a good guy instead of evil makes the plot of this movie flow better. There are already movies out there that have evil couples. And finally, stop saying that this movie was terrible when other people liked the movie. Star maybe 100s or 1000s of years old but it has the mindset of a child and Asha is 17 so it would’ve been odd 2. The biggest reason is it’s a Star…Star will live for millions if not billions of years longer than everyone so would it be fair for Star to watch everyone pass away as it continues to live on for a very very very very long time it’s kinda like shipping Moana and Maui the ideas are good in theory but you delve deep and realize Moana isn’t immortal and Maui is immortal so would it be fair for Maui to watch Moana and everyone else he knows pass away as he continues to live on?

He was not very good before either. Not Maleficent level evil but still not exactly a good person. One has to see the movie but, although he was a good person in his youth, he became very spiteful and vindictive and quite paranoid about losing his throne and that was before he touched the book (probably because too much power inflated his ego |). Even after touching it he was not exactly possessed, it just released his worst side and made it more obvious. People really should watch the movie themselves and not just rely on the views of others (who also haven't seen the movie and thus don't know what actually happened).

I like 2 songs very much, I like the idea of 2d-3d hybrid animation as it’s really nice to look at, Bazeema is my favorite, and I kinda like what they did with Simon to be some sort of face-heel-turn villain. How exactly was Magnifico right? It is one thing to say that he used to be a good person who was corrupted because of handling too much power but what part of his current mentality is right? When Asha pointed out the flaws in his system by politely arguing that it is OK if he does not want to grant every wish but he should not be keeping the rest and he can stop anyone who attempts something dangerous, you can tell from the expression on his face that he knows very well that she is being entirely reasonable and he does not even try to correct her other than him saying that wishes are impossible for people to fulfil themselves, he just cuts her off with saying that he decides what everyone deserves, not that this is truly what everyone deserves, and he proceeds to punish her and her whole family just because she voiced her opinion. He basically takes away chunks of people's souls connected to the best part of themselves and pretents people such as artists or other creators from pursuing their own interests unless he approves of them. If it was a case of Magnifico filtering out wishes that may cause harm to others, it might have at least made sense to say that morally he has a point, but this was not the case at all, as anyone who has seen the movie should know. It is basically as if someone took away someone's desire to create a movie like Joker or Sound of Freedom because it might create civil unrest (which is exactly what certain well known types of media say about such movies, hinting that they should be banned or something) or as if someone took away someone's desire to create "insert any book or work of art that has ever been banned or censored". He is 100% wrong, as Asha is 100% right; he should not be taking away people's wishes on the false promise that they will be granted after some decades if they are good and wait patiently. He also punishes entire families for something that one family member said, which is what the worst and most oppressive despots in history did and do. And no, he did not become evil after touching the book. His song sequence starts before he touches the book and you can tell from the way he takes poor Benito's stuff and gives it to others or how he volunteers poor Henry to help in a disaster while Magnifico gets praised fot it that he is not all that good.

I think wish is a fantastic movie and call me crazy but I think the concept art while great wouldn’t have worked I’ll start with the villain duo Now 2 villains aren’t uncommon in Disney movies but a lot of the time Disney movies have only 1 villain or villainess not saying it’s impossible to pull it off but I think it was smart to make it to 1 villain as a lot of Disney movies have 1 genuine villain Now for the star boy being a love interest …it wouldn’t have worked in my opinion at least and I’ll explain it’s cause we look at star and while he’s 100s of years old he seems to have the mind of a child and another reason is he’s gonna live much longer than Asha and everyone he loves it’s kinda like Moana and Maui Maui is a demi god therefore he’s immortal Moana isn’t immortal so would it be fair for Star to watch every one he loves just perish as he continues to live for millions and millions if not billions of years? While the concept was great on paper I can see why it was scrapped I still think the movie is phenomenal and keep in mind…not every movie will be like Aladdin,Lion King,Frozen,Tangled or Encanto we shouldn’t be expecting movies to be perfect it’s not the end of the world if a movie isn’t perfect it can still be 10/10 but not be flawless

Sorry my friend, this was BAD, there is no sugarcoat for this one, a dull inspired story, no real conflict, another dorky protagonist this time with less flaws and no interesting qualities, a joke of a villain after so long waiting for one....the absolute bottom of the trash with it's music written by AI instead of humans it seems or as it actually is a POP composer instead of a Broadway composer, and the only passable aspect the animation, looks unfinished, with an skin trying to imitate 2D paintbrush but just looks awful, specially when compared to the likes of Spiderverse, The Last Wish, Arcane, The Bag Guys and Mutant Mayhem. This is what Disney put out for the 100 anniversary.....Walt is probably rolling on his grave, this is insulting.

I have to respectfully disagree with your opinions, Sir. First of all, we do not actually NEED any form of media or entertainment. I believe that desire even just by one person creates a strong enough justification for any kind of entertainment to exist. Second, about the movie, one of my criticisms is that it kind of seems to piggyback off of the very existence of past Disney films. One of the things that made past Disney films great for instance was the presence of a character who has the interests of our main character at heart but stands in the way of his or her desires; think King Triton, Abuela Alma or even Frollo who appears to Quasimodo as a father figure before being discovered to be a villain. A villain does need to have clear motives for being the way they are. With all due respect I think it's kind of pitiful to say anything to the effect of "oh, this is not that other film that was highly praised by critics and fans alike." This Disney film (on Disney's 100th Anniversary, btw) is being shown up by an Adam Sandler animated film on a streaming service about a talking lizard. In my humble opinion, that is not a good look for Disney.

WOOF, gonna have to disagree with you on the soundtrack there. It is easily the worst part of the movie, which ya know, that’s what happens when you hire pop music composers who have no idea how to structure for musicals. But ya know, gotta appeal to the Tiktok generation I guess. The main problem with this movie is that it’s full of good ideas that are all executed horribly. Which is due to tons of executive meddling. And I’m not just speculating on that, there’s a twitter thread of someone who worked on the film who confirmed there were massive layoffs and executive handprints all over the movie during its production.

I agree that it's not that bad and doesn't deserve so much hate, but it's still 4/10 movie I would not recommend to watch. For me it was just boring, dialogues sounded so weird awkward and unnatural, everything was told not shown, the movie treats the audience like idiots or kids. Though I work in cinema and I saw kids also were bored and their parents often scrolled down on their phone during the movie. I agree that the animation is actually nice, it was probably the only interesting thing for me to watch on the screen. Songs are... The main song is nice, it's quite good and even catchy, but the rest? I wasn't really listening, there were also bored and so forgettable. So... Yes, it's 4/10, not recommend, boring, yet not the worst movie I've seen, the plot has actual a huge potential
