I mean, yes, but it is important to acknowledge that every person's difficulties are valid and important, even if some are more serious than others. Addison held a lot of fear of being discriminated against for her white hair and that is a totally valid fear, especially when you remember she is only a teenager, which is an age where appearance often matters a lot (way more than it should). Of course, Zed's issue of being discriminated against and oppressed is far more serious and significant, but that doesn't invalidate Addison's issue. They are separate issues that should not be compared, both valid but different.
@Cat-mi4nl
@Cat-mi4nl 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sentariana Of course! No one is saying that Addison's insecurities are invalid because they totally are, but literally everyone has some insecurities about their appearance. Especially teenagers. The problem here is that they try to make it like her hair problems are just as important as Zed's discrimination and suppression, which is even more problematic because because he is supposed to represent a minority

Addison is supposed to represent assimilation imo, her parents force her to hide something that really shouldn't be a big deal because it's "different", and it impacts her sense of identity. Her hair color being made a big deal is irrational yes, but that's the entire point.

I hate when a minority group is portrayed like this. The fact that they're literal flesh-eating zombies without this special wristband that makes them civilized actually validates all the racism coming from the humans. Zootopia has a similar problem, with the racism being based on the historical fact that predator animals used to be bloodthirsty monsters who couldn't help but kill and eat sentient prey, thus validating the prey animals' wariness of them. Real racism isn't justified, it's meaningless and arbitrary and it's based on practically nothing. There was a Star Trek episode where a race of aliens was introduced that had half of their face black and half of their face white, but there was racism based on *which* half was black or white, a distinction that is portrayed as meaningless and trivial, thus highlighting how stupid and pointless the racism is.
@gnomansland
@gnomansland 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on this movie, but I feel like Zootopia is a bit different bc it's not as obvious which group was supposed to be a stand in for white people and and which group was supposed to be the minorities. I always thought the predators were supposed to be white people, but I've heard other people say they always viewed the predators as being the minorities. That confusion creates its own problems, but I think it only has the Zombies issue if you view the predators as being the minority group.

@UConqkNRKCd41Y-lprP0BQ1A I mean I saw it once when I was like 12 so I wasn't that deeply analyzing it, but I definitely thought the predators were supposed to be white people and I've known other people who thought the same. It wasn't as blatantly obvious as you might think, especially for a kid. Because in the beginning of the movie they say that predators were the bad guys, I assumed that was code for them being the racist white people. On the other hand, Zombies might have the Zombies being bad in the beginning but they also say pretty much outright that zombies are the ones being discriminated against. They quite literally have a scene with separate entrances for "normals" and "zombies." There's no subtlety so you're much more likely to walk away understanding the allegory than with Zootopia. But take this with a grain of salt bc I was much older watching Zombies than watching Zootopia.

I have albinism, which means I actually do have white hair. It’s hilarious to me that Disney made this whole movie combating “discrimination” and then they just throw this plotline out there about the girl having a different color hair and it being a really big deal. Like they never addressed the fact that actually people do have this condition and that it has caused marginalization in our lives, not to mention the fact that almost every person with albinism is legally blind and that makes our lives harder as well. All in all, as all the other comments are saying, they messed this up really bad just like everything else, including all of the “racial” groups they coded into this thing. Good music and aesthetic though. I’m definitely watching the third one just to see how bad it is.

I saw a KZbin comment once that Addison’s real hair should be green instead of white. It would also make a genuine connecting factor between her and Zed.

@stayuptoolatedog528
@stayuptoolatedog528 Жыл бұрын
Well the issue with that is that Addison’s whole story arc is that she’s trying to find where she belongs as she feels that she doesn’t fit in. Hence Zombies 2, because that was a big plot point in the first which was unresolved. If they made her hair green, then 1. That just wouldn’t make sense. 2. Her entire storyline would be done within the first 10 minutes of the movie as everyone would make that connection. The thing that sets them together is the fact that they’re both different from what society thinks is normal. Hence how much they like each other & fall in love.
@irreplaysable
@irreplaysable Жыл бұрын
@@stayuptoolatedog528 I think you are definitely right about Addison’s arc, and how she forms her relationship with Zed. But the problem with the movies is that they don’t really establish a proper reason for why she doesn’t feel like she belongs. In the movies, she seems like she is generally well-liked, has a lot of friends, is on the cheer squad, etc. None of that really aligns with the idea that she does not belong. They try and solve that with the white hair thing, but then in the second movie, that never ends up being that big of a deal, so it doesn’t seem to matter that much anyway. I think having the hair be green would provide a much better reason. Because then she would have this characteristic that associates her with zombies, so she would not quite fit with the humans, but would not quite fit with the zombies either, because she is still human. That would make her arc make more sense, because she would then be able to grow to accept herself as other people around her, including Zed, do too.

If you want the "the oppressed are portrayed by the undead/monsters" actually done RIGHT, read the "Discworld" series by Terry Pratchett where the undead/monsters actually haven't done ANYTHING wrong and are discriminated against simply for being "unsettling". The "undead" revolutionary leader is Reg Shoe, one of the only two zombies in all of pop culture who doesn't terrify me because I have such a horrible fear of them. The other one is Billy from "Hocus Pocus". So yes. I am terrified of the zombies in this movie. Because they actually ARE dangerous and have been shown to actually HURT people. The logic in this movie is so odd; we're reinstating monster laws, which include things like curfews for zombies and monsters not attending prawn, but our school, which a chunk of the first movie was segregated, will still be integrated and we'll let the new monsters enroll in the school too, even though the point of reinstating the law was to keep those people away

Kinda reminds me of a short lived manga series called "My Pathetic Vampire Life" where the main character is required by law to continuously repeat his first year of high school because that's the grade he was when he died. My first thought upon seeing this movie announced was "Maybe making an anti-segregation/anti-discrimination allegory involve undead creatures who EAT PEOPLE isn't a great idea". Did no one think to say that at any point during the pitch meeting or beyond. Did they and were they not listened to. This is like the implications of Zootopia's allegory but somehow even less subtle and so much worse because not only are the outcasts here dangerous but also NOT NATURAL. Cringe doesn't even begin to describe it.

The main reason why she didn’t like her white hair is because the whole city is supposed to be perfectly planned and everyone looks and acts in a certain way and she is seen as weird for having white hair, so that’s why she is hiding it. This shouldn't have been a race thing. The zombies are literally humans with a health condition (that makes them a threat to other people) and need special devices to control the effects of this condition. Also, the condition is implied to be hereditary since zombies seem to be able to procreate to produce children with the same condition The conflict the movie could have gone for is the non-existant of an actual cure to turn zombies into regular humans causes parts of the society to try "cure" it through eugenics instead, as in preventing the zombies from having children so the zombie population will die off eventually. There's also a moral conflict because zombies are genuinely a threat to the safety and health to other people if their devices fail. There's also a possible conflict of a singular company monopolizing their devices. That company would single-handed determine if people with the zombie virus can have rational minds. So maybe the new CEO wants to monetize the hell out of it by making the devices a paid subscription and rig the device to kill a zombie if they don't pay up, because the device wouldn't function if it isn't paid for, making the zombies a threat to other people. There could be a generational difference between older zombies who got turned through the virus and younger zombies who are born as a zombie. Like, the ones that are turned misses being human and resents being a zombie, while the ones that are born are more proud of their characteristics as a zombie.
