For those who don't already know the plot of the Nutcracker ballet, this is pretty much it. A rich family with a daughter named Clara (and son named Fritz) throw a party on Christmas Eve. Clara's godfather, who is legendary, attends the party and gives Clara a nutracker toy for Christmas. Clara falls asleep and is shrunk down while all the toys come to life. A battle between the Nutcracker (backed up by toy soldiers) and the Rat King ( backed up by rats) commence. The Rat King defeats the Nutcracker but Clara savmares the day by throwing her shoe at the Rat King and kills him. The Nutcracker is fine and transforms into a prince, then the snowflakes escort Clara and the prince to the Land of the Sweets. In the Land of the Sweets, the candy canes, Arabian Coffee, marzipan and many other dance for Clara and the prince. Lastly, the Sugar Plum Fairy (who is basically the queen of the Land of Sweets) and her Cavelier perform three beautiful dances and sends Clara and the prince on their way. Clara wakes up and realizes it was all a dream.
@Pollicina_db
@Pollicina_db 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly the ballet is pretty limited when it comes to story telling (cuz they can't talk). Henri Dumas story of Nutcracker is the base I would say, instead of Tchaikoskys ballet. In the book it's explained how Nutracker became what he is and in the end he and Clara (or Maria like in the original) end up together.

@@annabelcaye Well there are some variations and different endings depending on the company and year of production, but Odette and the Prince throwing themselves into the lake is the og ending. There's one production where Rothbart gives up his power and everyone gets a happily ever after, but in most of the others at least one person dies. A lot happier than the Giselle ballet though.
@annabelcaye
@annabelcaye 3 жыл бұрын
@Bridgette Lair Yeah as soon as I saw this comment I looked it up right away and I found out that a lot of people tend to change up the ending based on how they want it to end instead or how they interpret it. I must say I like the ending when Odette and Siegfried go to Heaven together or die together in the lake more than Odette leaving Siegfried to mourn her death forever because at least then they die together lol. But of course I prefer when they all live happy and survive or come back to life (I saw that one production made them die but when Rothbart died they came back to life since the spell was now broken and everything was undone). I also know a lot of kids who do this ballet and I doubt they would have an ending where people died so tragically, lol... I personally don’t get the ending though. I know Siegfried accidentally said he would marry Odile, but it wasn’t his fault. He thought it was Odette, so wouldn’t the spell have worked because of what he believed? And when he found out it was Odile he was furious and rejected her for fooling him (which I feel like should’ve have renounced his previous statement and undone that betrayal), then went to Odette to ask for forgiveness and said she was the one he wanted. But his betrayal couldn’t be forgotten, like, I just don’t get that part. They make it seem like it was intentional and his fault when it really wasn’t. I am getting too defensive and overthinking this I know but I can’t get over that part in the endings where they die. 😂😂

The swan princess ballet follows Odette, a beautiful girl cursed by the evil Rothbart to be a swan unless her true love declares his love of her to the world. The Prince falls in love with her and invites her to the ball. Rothbart finds out this plan and traps Odette, replacing her with his own daughter (or pawn depending) Odette escapes too late and dies. The Prince battles Rothbart and defeats him, freeing Odette. Ballets are weird and have no dialogue and the movie was pretty accurate

@@blepp7641 Not really, though that's a common misconception. People have known that the world was round since the ancient Greeks, and sailors could easily tell it was round from seeing how the horizon curved. People weren't scared of falling off the earth, they just weren't going to sail all the way over the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans because they'd starve to death. The barbie and the nutcracker is literally a retelling of the nutcracker story. It’s originally a story from E.T.A Hoffmann that’s called “the nutcracker and the Mouse king”. This story was later turned into a Russian ballet in 1892. It’s famous for the score that was written by ten composer Chaiskovsy. That melody you know from the nutcracker is the MOST famous melody, but the whole story and ballet is incredibly popular and still being performed on stage to this day. The third movie has almost exactly the same backstory as the first film. Except this one is based of the famous swan lake ballet. This ballet is also famous for the chaikovsky music.

A lot of the weirdness in Barbie in the Nutcracker is from the original Nutcracker. The ballet has basically no plot, so I guess they did what they could and turned it into a fantasy adventure. In the original they beat the Rat King (who I think originally had like 7 heads???) in the first act of the ballet, and that breaks the Nutcracker's "curse" and he's a handsome prince. Then to thank Clara for her help, he takes her to the Sugar Plum Fairy and everyone performs for her. There's really no plot after that, but the different scenes and dances are really fun and the music is iconic. And remember, its a ballet, so this is all being told through dance. You don't really go to see the Nutcracker for the plot. Edit: Oh Swan Lake is also a ballet made by the same guy (Tchaikovsky, who also wrote the original Sleeping Beauty, so he's technically the writer of the "Once Upon a Dream" song in the Disney version, but, ya know, without the lyrics). Also iconic music, though other than the lady turning into a swan, I couldn't tell you the plot since I haven't seen it. Just assume there is little plot since its a ballet.

@l.c.8475

Rapunzel has a lot of source material to work with, but writers keep ignoring it, the Disney version is surprisingly close at the beginning with the flower. In the original her father steals lettuce from their neighbour's garden for his pregnant wife, the first time she's sick and the neighbour forgives them, the second time the wife is craving some lettuce, so her husband goes over the garden wall once again to steal some lettuce from the witches garden, the witch gets angry and once their child is born she takes it away and names the baby girl lettuce (Rapunzel literally means lettuce)

@@l.c.8475 Also she meets the prince because he hears her singing, decides to spy on the tower and finds out how the witch gets up there; they fall in love and live a secret romance for months, where the prince would come as soon as the witch left and bring Rapunzel pieces of silk for her to build a ladder to climb down the tower. Then, in some versions Rapunzel inncently asks the witch for a new dress because hers doesn't fit, revealing that she's pregnant, in other versions she's a straight up idiot and asks her how come it's easier to lift her up compared to the prince. The witch then cuts off her hair and releases Rapunzel to get lost in the woods. She then ties the hair to the window, lying in wait to trap the prince next time he comes. When he does, she pushes him off the tower and he lands in a bush of thorns that, though breaking his fall, pierce his eyes, condemming him to wander around blindly for years. Then one day, he wanders to where Rapunzel has been living with the twins she gave birth to, and is guided back to her by her singing. She cries when she sees his injuries (hence I think the tears reference in Disney's Tangled), and his eyes heal when her tears land on them. It's a pretty rich story, definitely not lacking in source material!

@doubledork crawford I read a version of Rapunzel where everything that you and @L.C. mentioned happened except for the whole twins thing and the guy walking blind for years. In the versions I read she didn’t have twins, and shortly after the guy was blinded she cried onto his eyes and healed him, which also made her hair grow back. After she did that, he helped her find her parents who had been mourning her absence and they lived happily ever after. But that’s interesting to know about the lettuce connection (didn’t know Rapunzel meant lettuce) and the whole pregnancy and love affair thing. I believe in the versions I read they only met once or a few times and it was instant love? I don’t remember. But I wonder what’s up with fairy tales princesses having twins lol, the original Sleeping Beauty had twins too. 😂

What I love about Seamus is that when he says "if this video gets X amount of likes I'll do more" and he actually does another video. Other youtubers don't keep their like promises!

You should watch some of the newer movies as well like Barbie Princess Charm School, Barbie in a mermaid tale, and Barbie A Fashion Fairytale.

personally 12 dancing princesses has a special place in my heart, but objectively speaking the whole aesthetic of a secret world brimmed with nature is absolutely amazing XD

Each Barbie movie has a quote at the end of the credits. The ones Seamus has reviewed so far: Barbie in The Nutcracker: “Anything is Possible.” Barbie as Rapunzel: “Love and imagination can change the world.” Barbie of Swan Lake: “You’re braver than you think.” Barbie as The Princess and The Pauper: “Live your dream.” I've always found them quite touching, they made me look up to Barbie lol.

Nutcracker didn’t have a message after the credits, but the back of the DVD case says “Barbie in the Nutcracker shows that if you’re kind, clever, and brave, anything is possible”

You can just hear how lost and confused Seamus is that he got to this point in his life. He's like "why must I spend my life now reviewing the barbie movies" and then goals were achieved and he's like "Well I'm a man of my word"

There’s actually a tourist attraction in Minnesota where I’m from that we refer to as Swan Lake. It was part of a conservationist movement when swans in America were endangered. This lady in Minnesota started feeding swans by the lake behind her house and ever since swans have been drawn to that place and people gather to look at them 😊

I had the Rapunzel Barbie. She had a string on her back you could pull to make her hair shorter and if you pulled her hair it would grow long again. It was the weirdest mechanism, and as time went on her hair clumped together and she basically had a hole in her head with a log of hair coming out of it and it was just the worst...
the new barbie movies are better than the old ones, and i'm not sorry
