Disney+: The DUMBEST Commercial of Super Bowl LVIII

Disney lost a ton of money in 2023 with how badly their movies failed, and with the company losing subscribers on Disney+. And now, they just lost another $7 million advertising at the Super Bowl with one of the most baffling ads I've seen in a long time, where they got, quite literally, nothing right.

The whole "Paramount's Mountain" series of ads are great, and also pretty funny... on top of that, it's a fever dream for fan-fiction writers too. Also speaking that particular Creed fueled commercial, Sir Patrick Stewart (Star Trek TNG/Picard) kissing Arnold on the helmet was a perfect 90s moment.

RFK and Temu were the biggest offenders this year. 1, politics is a no no during the Super Bowl. And 2. Temu is a very scummy app, and there's plenty of Negative reactions to the ads, practices and the company structure as a whole.

Especially since Paramount+/CBS is trying to position itself as the home of soccer in the US even though they don't have the most popular European league in the Premier League (which is on NBC/Peacock) or the World Cup (which is on Fox). There are also many parallels between the Super Bowl & the UEFA Champions League Final which is considered to be the Super Bowl of European soccer & by highlighting those similarities, Paramount+ hopes to grow further interest in the Champions League from regular sports fans & subscriber numbers.

I don't know how any commercial can be any dumber and more counterproductive than "Dr. Umstick." The Super Bowl is not time for your Adult Swim "anti-humor." I’d actually say the RFK Jr ad was the worst Super Bowl commercial this year It literally finished at the bottom of the USA Today Ad Meter and regardless of your personal politics it’s not hard to see why It was lazy as it basically a fan edit of an old JFK ad but replacing photos of John with Robert Jr. that actually offended other members of the Kennedy family so much that RFK Jr had to make an apology on Twitter immediately after it aired. Also spending $7mil dollars is pretty wasteful for an independent campaign. RFK Jr running as an independent means that he will need a big effort to gain signatures to get on the ballot in most states. In fact I myself helped gather signatures for Libertarian and Green Party candidates. It takes a lot of effort and it’s even more needed if you are a completely independent candidate like RFK Jr. That $7mil could have gone a long way in helping him with ballot access efforts I seriously don’t understand why the NFL has allowed for Presidential campaigns to air at the Super Bowl in the past few years (back in 2020 they had Trump and Bloomberg campaigns have ad spots)

Also, why is the disney+ ad called "cheap" but coinbase's QR code moving side to side like it's a screensaver was brilliant? EDIT: Seems like the lack of call to action was indeed stupid. Maybe there should be some lines that call you to subscribe or something like that. Or maybe put lines from non-Disney properties that are available in Disney+, like, maybe, Summertime Rendering or Heavenly Delusion.

What find humorous/depressing is the quotes they chose were from content that (A) Disney only acquired, not actually made by the company or (B) Made by the company YEARS ago, when they actually valued creativity and hired competent people to make these films. And the people who made the movies in Category (A) probably have more than a few traits in common with those in Category (B). Disney is a shell of its former self, run by people who wouldn’t even be qualified to clean the toilets in Walt’s offices.

I’ve seen other videos by “That Park Place” where he talked about the worst Super Bowl ad of all time, which is right up there with Accenture and a few other bad Super Bowl ads. Apple’s 1984 Super Bowl ad was iconic, and it was sort of a teaser for the upcoming Macintosh computer, and still remains a classic to this day. But this is nowhere near as the Apple 1984 commercial. I hope “WDW Pro” and “Clownfish TV” might talk about it in future videos.

Disney sucks as a company but this whole view of them being on the ropes because of one not so stellar year film wise is just a narrative. Disney makes more of their money by their parks these days and that business isn’t looking to slow anytime soon. As for the ad, I’m assuming it was minimal so you can picture the scene in your head just by the quote, trigger more of an emotional connection. I guess it missed the mark for people? First time I’m seeing it being panned. I thought it was ok but could be better.

I was actually a fan of the minimalist style of the ad. Although I had no idea it promoted the Taylor Swift Eras tour film. My personal least favorite ad of the night was the Temu ad, mainly because it had a black woman becoming a white one at the start. If I had a nickel for every time there was a racist ad at a Super Bowl where an AFC West team beat an NFC West team, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but kinda sad it happened twice.

I only watched the commercials once. Usually I’ll read or clean during the breaks. In 1997, (Packers v Patriots) I had to watch the ads as part of the media analysis class I took my junior year of high school. We had to pick a favorite and least favorite ad and write a report about what we think makes a good Super Bowl ad. I’m pretty sure this one would have been a lot of people’s least favorite. That being said I honestly paid no attention to any of the ads and all the Taylor Swift stuff is over my head, I don’t remember hearing about her much until she hooked up with Travis Kelce. Most music I listen to is older than Taylor Swift.

To be fair, a lot of unsubscriptions from Disney+ happened as a response to the price hike announced in October, which was poorly timed with the writers strike. Also, most Swifties already were aware of eras tour on Disney+, and they might have wanted to avoid being targeted again by MAGA politicians, which happened when they came out as LGBTQ+ allies. Seeing how they've been losing their minds at Taylor being at the Super Bowl, they probably didn't want to continue being targeted themselves.

Ok I have to disagree with you on the Taylor bit. Her calling it the “Eras” tour. is proof enough that you are not locked into only her last Album.
