It seems like both parks are becoming diluted with there original visions. Disney being about "imagineering" and Universal about the movie business, but with the addition of video game land, marvel characters, star wars, tv themes etc etc they're basically both the same thing. But Disney still feels Disney, and Universal feels like Universal.

Legolas I feel like they’re only doing that at the moment to keep the parks fresh whilst they put most of the efforts into Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land. Now Toy Story Land is open and Galaxy’s Edge opens next year, creativity will soar. On top of that, they’ve announced a €2bill expansion of Walt Disney Studios (one of the parks in Paris) so a lot of resources are dedicated to that.

I'm a former attractions attendant at Universal and I can say Universal's recent rides haven't been all that great, like kong and fast. @MidwaytoMainStreet8 жыл бұрын
+missyvelez While Universal did own Oswald, I don't know if it's fair to say that a rivalry started there. For one, Disney didn't lose the rights as much as he chose to sell them to Universal. He definitely regretted it, but it wasn't due to any wrongdoing on Universal's part. Ultimately it was one man, Charles Mintz, who turned on Disney and hired out his animators to start his own studio (Winkler/Mintz Studio) to produce Oswald cartoons. Even then Walt supposedly spoke highly of Mintz after the fact, and became good friends with Walter Lantz, the man who eventually took over making Oswald cartoons after Mintz stopped.

Personally, even though I love them both I'm gonna have to say that I'm #TeamDisney just because I feel like too many of Universal's latest rides are simulators where you put on 3D glasses, get in a car, look at a screen and then move on to the next room. Both of the big Wizarding World rides, Transformers and King Kong, for example, are like this and it just across as though Universal is trying to produce more rides faster but aren't putting too much creativity into how they immerse the audience- which is what a theme park should do best. I admit I can see the appeal from a business perspective, but from a visitor's perspective it loses its charm after the first few rounds. Also I tend to get sick on most of Universal's thriller rides due to how intense they can be, so I also favor Disney for being able to strike the balance of being able to provide enough thrill without making me have to sit down afterwards.
@FireBlastStudios7 жыл бұрын
forbidden Journey is more than just sitting in a chair watching a movie though. It's not all screens. There's physical sets and animatronics too... in fact I think there might be more sets and animations then there are screens in that ride. people just hate screens. but try to make a convincing ride where you follow Harry Potter and friends flying over the Scottish countryside while being chased by a flying dragon without a screen. some things just can't be pulled off without resorting to screens. It's like CGI in films, you shouldn't rely exclusively on it, but it's there for the things that can't be achieved other wise. together it's a very effective ride. you aren't just on a simulator, you are in a dark ride moving on a track, but the ride is designed to keep your focal point away from the track to convince you that you're "flying" through the scenes. the range of motion is so broad, there are parts where you'll be tilted on your back or towards the ground to specific focal points. it's like the next gen omnimover. it's not a simple simulator ride at all. I love both Disney and Universal and don't prefer one over the other because I see them as different experiences.
@KaijaSchmauss7 жыл бұрын
Wizarding World isn't just 3-D rides though. I'm not certain about what's been added since the Diagon Alley expansion opened, but I know they had a dragon-themed rollercoaster when I was there back in 2011. Though in general, I feel like Wizarding World of Harry Potter isn't anywhere near as enjoyable if you aren't a Harry Potter nerd. Most of it's charm is that it's the closest you can get to the wizarding world in the series being real.
@wherethetatosat7 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I even had to explain this to my friends with Universal passes. However, I feel the Harry Potter ride is actually a massive improvement. It is still simulated motion and relies on a screen (thankfully no 3D!) but there are practical effects and animatronics, too. More of this please, Universal!

Camlax1081 having been to both I basically 100% agree, aside from the part where you said Disney needs more thrill rides. I do admit they could use a bit more thrills in their parks but you have to keep in mind that a park like universal is for older people. My opinion on it is that Disney is a park made to take your kids to and to have fun at even if you are a bit older, but universal is more for the people that know that movies are put on a set. (Basically just an older audience is expected) so thrills for Disney aren't as important as putting on the "magic" show and thought

Having been to both Disney World and Universal Florida multiple times - Disney does the park experience much better. Lines at Universal are ALWAYS far too long (so now they have their "Express Pass" for an additional fee). Universals rides tend to be more ambitious in scope and execution than Disney - but they also seem to break down more often. By the end of a day in a park, Universal always feels like it was a bit of a chore (especially after the LOOONNNGGGG hike back to the car), whereas Disney makes one tired but happy. They are both not-to-be missed, but totally different experiences.
@MattMcIrvin7 жыл бұрын
To my mind, Universal's greatest selling point over Disney World is that if you stay on-site, everything's really close. If you stay at the mid-level resorts, those water taxis can get you over to the park entrances in just a few minutes, and you can be completely casual about popping over there--at Disney, it's more like planning a work commute, because the distances are so vast. Though they have bigger thrills, the theming and total experience of the Universal rides isn't up to Disney's level, *except* for the Harry Potter areas--they actually beat Disney at Disney's game. It's entirely possible, of course, that Pandora and Star Wars Land will up the ante again.
@ObiWan801867 жыл бұрын
Ummmm Yes. Over 2 hours for Spiderman. Over 2 hours for MIB. Many attractions a hour or more. I' don't know when you are going or what timezone your watch is in, but I think you've been driving a DeLorean at 88 MPH. The lines are most certainly LONG and SLOW. I'm not necessarily knocking the Express Pass system. They have to charge something for it or it everyone would get one and then it would be totally useless. But better ride design - something to do while waiting in line (pre-show, the in-line video games, like Space Mountain...) would help immensely .

with the express pass, the longest line I had to wait for was King Kong at like 10 minutes. all the lines were extremely short with the pass and I went to every ride in studios and islands of adventures. now volcano bay is another story since you have to reserve times on the cool watch they give u all though it didn't bother me since I just went to one of the two rivers or the wave pool meanwhile waiting for my ride or sometimes they had ride now for the rides with less people going to them. with express it took me one day to go to everything in studios and one day to go to everything in islands of adventures. it took me 2 days to go to everything in volcano bay due to having to reserve times and not having the option for express. that being said the longest I had to wait on a line once my watch said ride now in volcano bay was 20 minutes for the plunge where you go into one of the 3 pod trap doors on top of the volcano. I'm talking about the red which is the fastest out of the 3 and probably the most popular attraction of the water park

100% Universal for our family; much better rides and atmosphere. The only park that we thought could compete was Animal kingdom due to Flight of passage which was superb but not "wait in line for another three hours" superb so we only tried it once. Magic kingdom is good for little ones but even our youngest daughter age 7 seems to have outgrown it, and at the minute there are only four rides at Hollywood studios. We found that Disney was always rammed full where as we didn't seem to queue half as long at Universal. If we go back we'd happy stay a shorter time and stick to Universal.

We only went to Universal one time, and it was very shortly after they opened (had to be 90 or 91) and that experience was 98% misery. Several rides weren't working at all, we were in line for E.T. close to two hours, and the only ride any of us actually liked afterward was the Back to the Future ride, which to further the ideas that someone was stealing from someone there, was absolutely no different than Star Tours or Body Wars (only, I really preferred that ride to either of the others, and THAT'S the one they got rid of??). It took a long time, MANY years, before I even considered reports that they'd turned things around there seriously enough that, if I were in Orlando with friends, I'd even consider going back there. THAT'S how miserable it was around opening. (There's also the fact that no one in my family then, or really any too many of my close relatives now, aren't particularly into thrill rides. Friends are a different story--they all love coasters and drops and the like. I like rides that keep my stomach and heart out of my throat.) But I mean, for well over a decade and a half my parents and I would rather have gone back to the house of mirrors that we went to back in the late 80s or minigolfing or something than try and step foot in Universal again. Lasting damage.

Just a fun little bonus to the Disney vs Universal history for you Rob is that back when Walt has Oswald the Rabbit he made them for Universal. After finding that he didn't own the rights to Oswald due to his contract with Universal Walt left and created Mickey Mouse with his animators. However he would for the rest of his life felt that Universal was out to get him and his studio. As a consumer I see no reason to pick a "team". We go there for fun and choose our parks depending on what we are looking for. Magic Kingdom and Epcot are always good. On thrill ride day it is hands down Islands of Adventure (best park in Orlando). For animal parks we have Animal Kingdom and Busch Gardens (Tampa) - some years we do one of them, some years we do both. Worst park is easily - Disney MGM. I have not been back since they changed their name, but it was so bad I have no desire to go back. Universal was pretty good, but the whole "studio tour" bit gets old quickly. I preferred Universal in Hollywood. I do appreciate the fact that Islands Of Adventure made Disney step up their game. The competition has been good for us consumers. 😀

Interesting video for me personally as my parents took me to Disney-MGM on May 1st 1989. It was a bit rubbish, to be honest. There was little information about what was operational or not, and after sitting for about half an hour in the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular while the actors stood around talking about stuff, we realised that they genuinely were just still rehearsing and there was no show! The backlot tour was fun initially, but then it seemed to just peter out into a long-drawn out walk around nothing much happening. It was much better when we went back in August that year - I think Star Tours may have opened for previews by then, as well. We went to Universal a few months after it opened, and the most anticipated ride for me was the Jaws ride. By the time we last visited both of these parks in 1993, they still hadn't got the Jaws ride working!

People always say that Disney is for the eyes and universal is for the thrills. Universal has mastered and perfected their details and creativeness, to the point where they have progressed in a few years, where as Disney has had to work their way up. I think universal is much more ambitious, flexible, and out of the box with their creativeness and it pays off. Where Disney is much more simple and cookie cutter. Universal these past years have been running circles around disneys parks.

Let's all not forget, the rivalry goes deeper than just the theme parks. Back when Walt Disney was working for Universal Studios, along with Ub Iwerks, Charles Mintz bought half his staff from under him, threatening to take away Disney's character, Oswald if he didn't accept Mintz's budget cut. Disney refused and left, leaving behind Oswald, creating a new character and started a new studio. And the rest is history.

Did you know that Pandora at Walt Disney World was supposed to be something else? Well there was (quote "was") going to be a mythical aspect of Animal Kingdom, but the workers who designed and was apart of the building process got fired. Reason being due to the budget it would cost to create that part of the park. So the people who were laid off by Disney, worked with Universal on Islands of Adventure. They used the almost same designs to make the mystical part of the theme park next to what will later be Wizarding World.

I just went to universal 2 days ago, the employees were extremely unfriendly, and for a slow day, pretty rushing with the guests. Also Universal needs to stop using 3D with a splash of water or a bit of fire in their rides and the buggy ridden should be spiderman exclusive. I loved transformers, that one actually made you feel a part of the ride, but the movies did that already , the resolution of the 3D needs a major update too. Disney actually keeps you interested and it feels adventurous, universal you are supposed to be in a land, but immersion might feel more real for young children. Disney has more to offer and the customer service is phenomenal any time the family needs something. Ome major thing I can really respect universal for, their unforced sales. Disney manipulates you with the senses, I didnt walk into universal smelling cinnamon. Everybody working at universal seriously looked like they hated their lives and that Disney turned their application away. Universal is very much more of an adult theme attraction, Disney just has Epcot to offer for the adults to enjoy most with little of big shot rides. Universal removing jaws was a mistake, it needed a real non coaster water ride. As for character meets. Optimus prime was actually pretty cool. It seems universal is protective but very relaxed about their costume performers, Disney has to be uptight about cast members . As for special events, I hear halloween horror at universal is phenomenal and it makes up for the usual park activity, same with its marti gras, Disney's holiday parties especially halloween are wholesome. I have more trips to universal planned soon to help me warm up as far as my favorites VS eachother Disney Pandora Flight of Passage rivals Kong very very close. Universal wins the Coaster challenge

You say that if it weren’t for the rivalry with Universal, Disney wouldn’t have added loads of things. That’s correct, but now to win the battle, both are using more IP based lands and rides. Some of these are great, but they are sacrificing the central theming of the different parks for many - such as adding Guardians in Epcot for an extra thrill. If Universal weren’t there, Disney would probably be smaller than it is today, but the stuff there would probably be more original and more thematically appropriate.

I love both! Have been to both and had great experiences! But for me, I would choose Disney. I love how the parks have many variety and they have things for all ages! People just say that Universal has more thrill rides than Disney and is more adult. Well, Universal has many things for kids as well, such as the Barney show, Dr Suess rides, Minions, Curious George, etc. Disney has many thrills like Expedition Everest, Rockin Roller Coaster, Test Track, Flight of Passage, etc. Disney is a lot more creative when it comes to their rides. Universal has too many simulation rides which can lead to people getting nauseous. But they have great rides like ET, Hulk and the Harry Potter rides. Disney is also boosting up their thrill rides, adding two roller coasters in 2021 which are Tron and Guardians Of The Galaxy. Star Wars or Harry Potter?? I don't know, since I only been to Harry Potter land and absolutely loved it! But like I said, I love both but Disney feels more magical and its geared for everybody, not just "little kids".

Originally, Disney and Universal weren't competitive at all...they actually worked with each other at times-for instance, it was Bob Gurr who created the original King Kong for Universal Hollywood (before it burned down in 2008)...I tend to believe when Disney brought Eisner in, that's when all this competition started...there's a great book called "Universal vs Disney" by Sam Gennawey, and he talks about both companies' histories, including one story where, for a time in the 70s, Universal almost bought Disney

Because it's a series about Disney history, so the context of the video is primarily framed around Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando with ,yes, a focus on Disney since it's a Disney fan channel.

If i’m going to be honest, both parks are equally well thought of and well done. Yeah, Universal might not have the exact tools it needs to be like Disney, and they might not have the most immersive attractions and lands. But what matters, is that both companies do well with their business, and have their ways to satisfy their customers. Therefore, both are equally good.

I worked at Universal Studios Tour in Hollywood in the early 80's. They did sell a guide book that mentioned a studio to be built in Orlando. I think if Disney never built their studio Universal never would have built theirs.

As a Male former cast member, Did you know... Prior to the opening of Universal Male Cast Member, no matter your role were not allowed to have Facial Hair. It was said that Walt him self said no facial hair, even though sported a mustache. The though is that facial hair projected an unseemly Image. Then Universal open and they had no such policy. Many of the Male Service Technicians Jump ship and went to Universal. Disney wanted to know why. Facial Hair as part of self expression came up. Disney came to a Compromise of Sorts. Men could sport well groomed mustaches, but no beards. You also had to grow the Mustache out while on vacation, you could not present with Stubble or thin mustaches. Many a time did several of my manager make me go back stage to shave.

They are really good parks,but it actually about your taste of rides and age. If your young and do mostly calm rides and some thrill rides,go to Disney world If your older and looking for intense rides,go to Universal

I don't go to a theme park for the costume characters or the company that owns it, I go for the rides, and the fact remains that in Magic Kingdom, the rides are more... family friendly. Only one roller coaster and not one inversion. Not one ride that is really exclusively for "big kids". On the other hand, Universal Islands of Adventure do have those thrill options. Universal Studios, though, is mostly simulators.

Hollywood Studios is a Disney park I would say is geared more for teens, considering they have Star Wars, and other thrill rides.

If the Wizarding World of Harry Potter sections in the Universal Parks weren’t successful it’s likely we wouldn’t have seen any of the single IP themed areas at Disney. Theming an entire section of a park was a very risky thing that just happened to work out wonderfully.

#TeamDisney. I've never been to Universal but don't plan to because Disney has better movies and characters, so the experience you get would be better. Plus, Disney is a lot bigger so more room for more stuff to be built. And from what I've seen of Universal, Disney looks a lot better.

I love both universal and Disney. While I like Disney better because it is Bigger (the one in cali vs the universal in cali I have never been so my opinion of that might change) I have to say universal and Disney are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES. I can't compare the two because they are just SO different. Every time I go to Orlando I go to both Disney and universal unless I am not there but a day then I only go to universal. Universal used to hold a place in my heart because it was SO MUCH CHEAPER than Disney but now their prices are very similar. But again. Universal and WDW are 2 absolutely different experiences and I can't ever compare the two because they are equally as amazing.

Disney isnt about thrill rides it is about immersion. If you are looking for thrill and you end up at Universal Studios I would say you arent even at the best place for it, as Sea World Orlando has even bigger and faster roller coasters than anything Universal can offer. Although the individual areas of Harry Potter at Universal are quite impressive, when it comes to overall immersion, experience, and attention to detail, nothing can compete Walt Disney World.
@hotwax93766 жыл бұрын
There is one undeniable instance where Disney intentionally and blatantly copied Universal, but it was in films instead of in theme parks. Disney's CG animated film Dinosaur has a plot that is nearly identical to Don Bluth's Land Before Time, which was distributed by Universal. Sure, you could argue that there are SOME differences, but the basic storyline is the same, and many of the details are identical as well. Though I'll admit I've never seen Dinosaur, I remember seeing Disney Channel run promos for it in their "Movie Surfers" segments when I was seven and thinking that it was almost exactly the same movie as Land Before Time. I've always been bitter about they way Disney shamelessly plagiarized Land Before Time, since that film was a childhood favorite of mine and stands the test of time far better than almost anything Disney has made since Mulan. And let's not forget The Wild, which was Disney's cheap attempt to mimic the success of DreamWorks' Madagascar. For all the debatable accusations of plagiarism that have been lobbed at Disney over the years (especially the allegation that The Lion King was plagiarized from Kimba the White Lion), there have still been some irrefutable examples of it. Eisner turned Disney into a company of greedy profit-seekers who don't care about what they're doing is morally right or in good artistic taste, and Iger has only made it worse.

Even as a kid I never felt the Magic at Universal the way I did at Disney. A kid isn't really biased (to a degree) when it comes to them parks. Fun is Fun. I even enjoyed to being in the Atmosphere of Disney. That being said. I personally never liked MGM since it felt out of place for being Disney. Because of that I never tried Animal Kingdom. That and I didn't have the money to go to all at once. HAHA

I would like to think that I would be Team Disney forever, but I found ironically, I like Disney less, and Universal more! And it is the size that does it! Being mobility limited now, it is so hard to get around the Disney property! People hate seeing people like me on the bus system, but I cannot afford to take taxi's around the property. But I can get around Universal without hogging space on the bus system. Also the Counter service food at Universal is miles better. Finally the crowds at Disney have become suffocating for me!
@khalani90446 жыл бұрын
both have pros and cons..... but the numbers don't lie..... Disney receives double.....sometimes almost triple the amount of visitors that Universal get every year. Disney parks/resorts in Orlando receives most of the Florida visitation...... the only place in the US that gets more visitors than Disney parks/resorts in Orlando is New York. Vegas is 3rd.
