I'm 54 years old and grew up in in Southern California. Not only have I been on both versions of the mine train, but I've also been on the pack mules and the stage coach. I can remember dancing with Indians. I remember when Critter County was Bear Country. The Country Bear Jamboree was THE attraction back then. I rode a couple of different versions of the Carousel of Progress before it was taken to Florida and replaced with America Sings. Of course I've been on America Sings. There was Flight to the Moon before Mission to Mars. Last I was there it was Red Rockett's... I think? Peoplemover? Yes! Adventure Through Inner Space. I could go on and on. 🙂 Damn, I'm old.

I'm just old enough to remember riding the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland. What stand out most in my memory are the teetering and spinning rocks and the Devil's Paint Pots. I remember seeing the ads for Big Thunder Mountain when that opened, which soon became one of the rides that we would _always_ cycle through several times on every visit. I always look for the Mine Train relics when I can visit.

Thanks for this report Dallin! Stunning! I have seen the fish jump very many times! I've heard the bear and other aminule sounds too. I first rode the NWRR when I was five. For some unknown reason the Rainbow Caverns terrified me! I cried, screamed and thrashed, it made me a basket case! After that it became my favorite part of the ride! Amazing! When they removed the ride I was devastated that the Rainbow Caverns were gone! It seemed to take ten years for them to finish Big Thunder Mountain Railroad... when I finally rode it for the first time I was so pleasantly surprised that they had added that mini section of the Rainbow Caverns at the beginning! Yay! Also I really hoped that they would put a rather large section of Rainbow Caverns in the DLRR tunnel between Frontierland and the Toon Town Station, but no, that would have been too much, obviously!

I know that this is really late in commenting, but I do distinctly remember the pack mules at both Disneyland AND Knott's. I vaguely remember the train, but not nearly as much as the smell of mules in the California sun.

The pack mules were my favorite ride as a very young child. There were probably 10 different pictures - starting with me on mom or dad's lap and then graduating to riding on my own. Once in a Davy Crockett hat, even! The mine train was wonderful. Geysers would spray you, some of the cactus looked like cartoon people (very Marc Davis!) and there were animals everywhere. I was 12 when Big Thunder opened. As a callus pre-teen, I barely mourned the rides I'd adored because it was an awesome roller coaster (still my favorite in any Disney park.) But as I get older, I'd give anything to cruise through those deserts and forest in a slowly moving train.

I remember both the mine train ride and the rainbow caverns! Back in the day people were more open to wonder, so on the mine train ride I remember a mother instinctively pulling her young son to her while we passed under the rolling rock. An adult man near me actually called out "Watch out!" and all of us near him laughed. At the rainbow caverns it was all about the music they had going--kind of a dreamy pipe organ fantasy tune. There is a small amusement park called Enchanted Forest south of Seattle that has a very similar attraction inside a pizza restaurant. It has the same feel with lighting and music, and it is one way to get that experience now.

Fun fact about me: as a kid, I would see the tunnel at 5:16 and I was CONVINCED that it was an extension of Thunder Mountain. Like, the train on the ride jumps the tracks, flies over the guests on the walkway, and lands on the opposite track and goes through the tunnel. It took years for my family to get me onto Thunder Mountain because I was so certain I was gonna be hurtled through the air (never mind that I had never seen that happen, even though I hung around the ride area a lot). In short, I was an idiot.

Well now, Howdy folks! Welcome to the little minin’ town of Rainbow Ridge, the Gateway to Nature’s Wonderland. So began the spiel that was played for everyone as they left the boarding area. I was a Frontierland Operations employee from ‘69 ‘till ‘73. I spent my summers on The River and my winters often on the Mine Train. While waiting for the next train, guests could hear crashing noises along with a piano being played and glass breaking reminiscent of a bar fight, emanating from the Saloon. Then after a bit of silence refrains of “Beautiful Dreamer, wake unto me, Starlight and Dewdrops are waiting for thee”....would come drifting out of the Opera House. So here is a little Disney story for all of you Mine Train friends. At 5:37 in the video, you see the mine train coming out of the tunnel onto a trestle. The view from the train was of a family of bears at the waters edge, layin’ in the tall elephant grass or standing up and using a tree for a scratchin’ post. Now the bears were actual bearskins affixed to a structural armature that could be place on a mechanism to make them realistically move. A form of early audio-animatronics. There were spare bear armatures kept in a shed behind the scenery and maintenance personnel would regularly change them out to keep them looking fresh. Well, one cold winter’s night I left the boarding area with a trainload of adventurers. The train first went through a tunnel and out to the River and then would double back and come out of the afore-mentioned tunnel and onto the trestle. So as we are emerging onto the trestle one of the other ride operators was lying on his back in the grass with one of the bear armatures on top of him and he was screaming like he was being eaten alive. I chuckled but made no mention of it to the guests. Well, we get back to the station and about 10 minutes after all of the guests had disembarked, here come two security guards running as fast as they can and they said they needed to get into the attraction because someone had reported that a man was being eaten by a wild animal. It was certainly a night to remember for me as well as for the lucky guests who got to see the “carnage” first hand. Thanks for posting this great video, Offhand Disney, and allowing me to pull up some fifty year-old memories.

Regardless of whether people want it back, where would it go? Most of its former route is where BTMRR is now, and the rest occupied what us now Galaxy’s Edge. There’s no place for it, and Frontierland has enough going for it anyway. The Peoplemover, on the other hand, was never really replaced. The track (which is apparently damaged beyond repair) is still there, mocking us. It may not have been the most exciting ride, but it was convenient. I’m in favor of anything that reduces how much I have to walk. To that end, they should bring back the Sky Buckets as well. They don’t need to pass through the Matterhorn, just go around it. They could even add a third stop at Toon Town or Galaxy’s Edge if they wanted to.

@@bradleysmall2230 I think most of those issues could be mitigated if they banned food and drink on it. The temptation to drop food or garbage on somebody is certainly there, but what else are they going to drop? The park already screens people for stuff like rocks when they enter, and they’re not likely to drop anything that they care about. Other amusement parks and zoos make this type of attraction work, Disney can too. They could always make them fully enclosed as they did with the Skyliner in Florida, then nobody would be able to drop anything.

Natures Wonderland was one those rides that defined the old Disneyland to me. It was a *pleasant* ride and a lot of fun, being rivaled only by the Calico Gold Mine at Knott's, which is still running. There is no comparison to Thunder Mountain except it uses the same set dressing. NW was a ride you, your folks, Grandma, and baby sister could all share. I also enjoyed the pack mules, but I did feel sorry for the animals. They looked very tired. The dancing hot springs and balancing rocks were memorable. I liked the rainbow caves especially with the florescent waterfalls. I really *miss* the old Disneyland before the long lines, thrill rides, and bank breaking prices. Disneyland had a charm that no longer exists.

I not only remember the mine train ride & the pack mules, I thoroughly enjoyed riding them. I have a number of photographs of the "oddly shaped" cacti found along the way, the colorful mud pots & geysers. Naturally, the abandoned tracks are noticeable if you remember the original ride. Big Thunder Trail wasn't there until Big Thunder was built & there was no way to get right from Fantasyland to Frontierland until then. Another piece of set dressing on Big Thunder Trail is an abandoned hand car that was used in "Hot Lead & Cold Feet". When taking my kids, who were all born after Big Thunder was built, I would be sure to make a point of telling them to keep their eyes open to see if the "fish" was jumping. I was also quick to pause a moment when taking first timers to the park, explaining that there are fish in the water...some times you can see one or two of them jump. After all these years, it rarely does. However, that "pond" has become home to numerous breeding turtles, minnows & crayfish. Over the years, it's been interesting to see just how many animals, aside from the ducks & sparrows, who have made Disneyland their permanent home~

Walt Disney and trains, they go hand in hand. He was a train whisperer

My Dad told me he would ride the mules when he was a kid at Disneyland. I was always confused when he said this when I was a child because I knew they didn’t have those at Disneyland then. But as I grew older and more interested in the history of the parks, I started to ask my Dad more about his Disney parks experiences that I never had the opportunity to participate in. It’s been fun hearing some of those stories.

I think they should bring it back but a modern version in 3D with a story.

Yep! Disney uses abandoned stuff to full effect in later attractions. Some parks may do the same. Certain items are really hard or expensive to remove. Many of the footers for Big Bend (Six Flags Over Texas) are still there decades after the rides removal. I did see the mine train + tunnel from the Mark Twain. There was a fellow that recreated this in miniature (including working geysers!) + balancing rocks. This ride is also in the movie 40 pounds of Trouble.

When I was little I was always so curious about those tracks on the banks of rivers of America, and I was equally curious about the abandoned peoplemover tracks. Of course as a kid I thought everything in Disneyland was real, so I used to pass by Frontierland thinking about what happened to the tracks and why there’s not a train there anymore. I used to think about hopping over the fence and crawling through the little cave area to see what was on the other side. I still wish I could do that lol.

I am not into thrill rides and would have enjoyed the Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland. But I was only 13 when it closed and lived in North Carolina at the time.

Sadly the train was removed years ago so it's no longer on those tracks but I did get a picture of it before it was removed! Funny enough when Galaxy's Edge opened you can now see the old pack mule trail as you walk into Galaxys Edge. I didn't know that's what it was at the time my mother pointed it out she said it was one of her favorite rides as a child.

I really wish they would turn that little area into a rest spot, so you can watch the river activities from a new view.

I rode the Pack Mules Through Nature’s Wonderland and the Mine Trains Through Nature’s Wonderland as a kid and when I was working at Disneyland, I got to watch them building Big Thunder from start to finish and was a human test dummy for the first passenger runs. Good times and yes, they've toned down Big Thunder in the intervening years. It was quite the rough ride at the beginning, although a LOT of fun, but everyone showed up sore the next day.

I've seen the salmon jump when I worked there during the summer of 2000. One of my favorite churro carts to work at used to be in the area to the right of the Mark Twain loading dock and not far from the pond. You brought back some good memories of late night cleaning up the cart, listening to the park sounds while I waited for my lead to come shuttle the cart backstage. I think its a shack with some benches now. What other job has you stop working because Fantazmic was starting on top of providing you a front seat to the show? I pride myself knowing there are few people on Earth who have seen that show as many times as I have. LOL J/K YELLOW TEAM FOREVER

All I desire is to have Song of the South released on DVD. That and “The Great Locomotive Chase” because it had Chad Jesus as Conductor Fuller.

The Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland was quite memorable. My memories of ridding it was in the 70's. I have to say the Disneyland of the mid 70's, I thought was far more interesting than anytime after. It was still Walt's park in those days. In that era it was a truly an exotic place. There was nothing like it back then, I think that has been lost in the decades since. Mainly due to poor leadership and a lack of dedication to the original Disney way.

I know Walt was a big train guy but I just realized there are a lot of trains at Disneyland. Monorail, Disneyland Railroad, Big Thunder, and Casey Jr.
