It's finally time for a new BIBLE STUDY WITH ME series, and this time we will be studying the book of JONAH! Most prophetic books focus on the words of the prophet, but this book is unique in that it is a story about the prophet Jonah himself. This story is sooo much more than a story about a man who gets swallowed up by a big fish, it's a story that craftily causes the reader to examine his or her own heart and ultimately, a story that masterfully reveals to us the character of God and points us to Jesus. In this Jonah chapter 1 Bible Study With Me video, we are covering the historical context, theme, and book structure for the book of Jonah, and jumping right into the story where Jonah is given a call, but disobeys God. There is always a cost when we cling to our own way and disobey God and Jonah chapter 1 presents the question...what is disobeying God costing you? Studying the book of Jonah has seriously left me in awe...I can't wait to dig in with YOU! 🤍

To me, what stood out the most was that Jonah's disobedience not only cost him, but those around him. It made me think what storms might I be connected to because of the people I'm in the same boat with? It also made me thankful for God's compassion not only to nonbelievers, but to people of God who DELIBERATELY walk in disobedience because we feel as if our own opinions trump God's will. This ought to make us want to live better. Let God's kindness lead us to repentance!

Jonah going "down, down, down" is also an example of us decreasing so Christ can increase within us (Jn. 3:30). Beautiful study. All glory to God. God bless you, Kaci ☺

I love the part about the other men on the boat praying to God and recognizing God's presence when the storm stopped. It's so cool to see an example of God using even a believer's disobedience to show himself to non-believers.

The verse that stuck out to me the most was Jonah 1:15 "so they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the seas ceased from its raging." This one stuck out to me because he was fighting God's will this entire time but as soon as he did what God wanted the sea IMMEDIATELY ceased it's raging. I feel as though oftentimes we catch ourselves running from God and then questing why we're facing all of these storms but if we were to just take a minute and follow God's will instead of our will, those storms would cease from their raging.

I absolutely loved this video!! I’ve never really looked at Jonah this way!! Loved it and can’t wait for the rest of the study 📖 🎉 Note that I took from the story: I think it’s so amazing how even from Jonah disobedience, the sailors came to know Christ. Jonah 1:16 “The Sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve Him”

So many good takeaways but one of the bigger ones for me was how sun causes us to hide or flee. When I was younger I avoided certain people or situations in order to not feel shame or conviction . I also loved one of your last points about how safety meant the sacrifice of another. Boom, Jesus! So good! So happy you’re doing these again! It made me study my Bible so much more even when you paused the studies for a bit. Congratulations on your baby boy!

..Jesus said; "If u love Me keep My Commandments", so read this; We have to obey God's Ten Commandments, and keep the Sabbath Day Holy, not Sunday (day) but Sabbath Day on Saturday it's on the Seventh Day of the week amen amen and amen ❤. The Sabbath Day for the people of God, so if you not belong to God then you don't need to keep the Sabbath Day Holy...

Yes, many people don't realize that when God tells His people Sabbath is a SIGN between you and me FOREVER, that the word SIGN can also be translated MARK. That means God's MARK on us is the Sabbath covenant for when to buy sell and trade. If we take another mark, that an enemy made up, we are NOT obeying God.

Jonah only disobeyed God once though, not many times, that's why God had grace and mercy on the situation because there was still a chance for Jonah to continue the assignment-- Jonah didn't forfeit it. This video convicts me because I disobeyed God recently on 3 occasions where on each occasion I did not obey God's instruction and therefore I have finally forfeited my kingdom assignment-- I did receive grace for the previous occasions but I disobeyed God again after that and therefore God has recently said I've forfeited it😔

I had a strong feeling of the same sorts of insights when I did communion today and was sort of drawn to this video through a few different things. Can't say I hundred percent know. I do want to have more biblical knowledge though. I have felt this for a while even though it is not massively logical to me. Other areas this might apply do seem to have me consciously going to the darkness rather than taking the easy route out and avoiding it.

Very thought provoking, Kaci. I am taking this lesson to heart. I always disliked the story of Jonah I thought he was an idiot, fool disobeying God. My friends chose Priscilla Shirers study on Jonah, An Interrupted Life. It was eye opening for me then. God's living Word is again speaking to me in this lesson. I will be praying. I don't want to pay the price of going down, down, down away from God's will... like a fool. I want my husband and I to follow the Lord's calling as pastor and wife. Thank you for your faith, insight and teaching, my young sister in Christ. Blessings and love. ❤

Hello, Im trying to catch up. I have the Macarthur Study Bible and I find another bit of irony here. The people of Nineveh (derived from Nimrod, Akkadian for "fish") worshipped the fish goddess Nanshe and Dagon and here Jonah at the end of the chapter gets swallowed by a fish right unto the belly of it. It seems like one way or another God was telling Jonah to get into the belly of what he was called to do, perhaps as a symbol to him? Thought that was an interesting tidbit. Thank you for these studies.
