Velma episode 6 review where we had a scene I couldn't believe was actually in the show. In episode 1 they even made a comment about how all the stuff they were adding in there was just an attention grabber, I didn't expect them to double down on it and get worse later. Infront of her dad no less! Who even signed off on this at HBO? Let me know what you think about it down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

This is the kind of take that clearly doesn't understand that mental illnesses aren't all equal to each other. One person's depression or manic anxiety is not the same as schizophrenia or PTSD. And it completely invalidates the family member's and friend's experience to a horribly simplified dichotomy of "real love". If they were going for some kind of allegory for excepting people as their weird selves they went about it the wrong way and not to mention how hypocritical they are when it comes to Fred.

As I watched my grandfather slip into dementia and die, his lucid moments became fewer and his hallucinations more frequent. We desperately tried going along with his hallucinations just to calm him down. I can tell you, validating “his truth” never did anything. His panic continued whether we validated him or not because the problem was in his mind not in a lack of validation. This episode of Velma gets that exactly reversed.

just to clarify @Disparu when you seen them, Velma and her dad, fishing that green diver ghost up at the pear that wasn't actually a ghost but another ref the audience was suppose to catch from the old series... basically it was another memberberry gag moment...
@jimrussell4062
@jimrussell4062 Жыл бұрын
That's a fair point. Every "ghost" in the original series was a person in a mask, so in THEORY that should be a person pretending to be a ghost. But this is "Velma" so.... it's most definitely NOT the original series. Just saying it's the one time I've seen they might not be in error here. However, given the track record of the series so far....
@SammEater

Also, it's clear that this show's continuity ignores the comedy scenes, so even if they fished a real ghost that scene does not count to the overall story because the writters clearly don't care for it.

It's like someone learned the exact wrong moral. It is true that audiences usually don't understand the craft of writing so you can't follow their ideas without question, but it is not true that you should just ignore the audiences altogether because ultimately they are who you are writing FOR. It is true that no matter how good your work is that there will still be haters who are determined to dislike it, but it is not true that everyone who dislikes your work is such a person and can therefore be dismissed. This kind of 'there is no morality do anything that makes you feel good' is so typical of modern intersectionalism and why it is also doomed to fail should it ever have any kind of success.

They say that every villain is the hero of their own story. Velma? Velma makes "Big" Jack Horner - a man willing to cut the horns off baby unicorns, shoot a puppy (in the face), carelessly throw away the lives of his own underlings without a shred of remorse, and who is downright pleased to be called an "irredeemable monster" - look like a saint by comparison.

Sadly I think I know the in-show-universe for this: last episode in the historical society Velma had a hallunucantion, but because it was Fred who was with her (and not Norville) she wasn't able to get snapped back into reality, so she ended up with her head inside the empty Edna Perdue journal box, on the ground, and lifeless. Lucky for her the society docents all carried defibrillators. Of course her dying from the hallucination is pretty over the top and unlikely-- I could see it causing her to run off a roof by accident maybe, but it'd be more likely that she'd pass out (which is what I originally thought happened in the historical society, until Fred declared her dead).

@@Yipper64 oh absolutely. I legit think that after the show cut away from the sight gag Fred used one of the defibrillators to shock her perfectly functioning (but likely four sizes too small) heart. This show would be mediocre if it didn't have the Scooby-Doo ip connected to it, it would still be hated by many, but they made it worse by making it connected to the show where a talking dog helps solve mystery. I hate the fact this is an adult show because they minors in this show yet still have stuff such as nudity in the show. Most other versions they are adults or heading to/at college and still are kid friendly, yet till have heart and is fun to watch. I think the limitations of kids shows can help a show out, letting the director the ability to do everything can easily be a flaw as seen here.

The weirdest part about the writing direction on this show is that they're constantly making jokes about how screwed these caricatures are without ever completely following through with them. It's like you're supposed to laugh about how awful all these characters are, but at the end of the day, things continue to work for them. So they never grow as individuals, they're treated better than they deserve, but all the while it feels like they almost want you to be having a laugh at them? It's so bizarre. Just another flop with a writing team that thinks they can make an enjoyable show out of despicable characters without clever humor and well-deserved bad karma for the characters' poor behavior.

The episode was "A Clue for Scooby Doo" about a ghostly diver that turned out to be just a disgruntled fisherman.
