I remember going on holiday in Ullapool in the north of Scotland in the early 80's and there were loads of Russian trawlers there and they were carrying out spying missions on our ports and submarine lanes. They also had way too many aerials for normal trawlers. They also used to fish of Gairlochhead where faslane leads out to the Atlantic. Wierd thar we fished their waters and they fished ours.

With all those Submarines swimming about from all sides for decades, they know exactly where every sunk Ship, Fishing vessel or rowing boat is located....

Might be a UK nuclear test? Sounds insane but it was kinda common practice to keep those things secret to keep russian spy satellites from locating them and analyze the delivery methods etc also im pretty sure the test ban was signed by then so atmospheric tests couldnt be done officially, maybe they needed one? Uk was late to nukes after all. And its a perfect location as well, middle of the sea in the middle of the night. and the 100 mile zone they tried to empty and the flash a ship reported makes sense then, i guess somebody didnt listen and govt isnt happy, not the first time a nuke test went wrong, castle bravo gave the crew on a japanese fishing boat radiation poisoning etc. Very embarassing for the UK if that got out. Weird things often have normal explanations.

In that case they would never admit that they accidentally killed a crew and also violated the test ban, the soviets would do the same and US would give UK hell for it

It's arguably not really "Government" as a whole - the truth of the matter is that during the Cold War era, the military intelligence apparati on all sides were considered laws unto themselves. If it was decided by senior intelligence officials that ministers (much less the public) did not "need to know", they would not be told - and outright misled if it was felt "necessary". The approach was as true of Soviet, US and French intelligence services as it was the British.

It's a pity there hasn't been a documentary since the vessel was found and the re-opened enquiry concluded on the causes of the loss in 2004/5. It's a terribly sad story, though interesting for all the conjecture it created at the time which was subsequently demystified. Understandably there are still those that disagree with the results of the enquiry however rational and objective they might seem given the unnecessary loss of so many lives. An enduring story.
