Cool video! You played some fascinating chords at the beginning, and great to hear you improvising along to the track! I saw Landau once, with a group called the Ringers - Landau, Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, with Keith Carlock on drums, I think the bassist may have been Etienne Mbappe (who plays with gloves on!). Amazing show, they did a fantastic version of Worried Life Blues. All 3 guitarists were mind-blowing. You would’ve fit right in!

Just saw Landau with James Taylor last Wednesday night and after his solo on Steam Roller Blues I told my wife we just heard one of the best guitarists ever. I remember his name being on so many albums over the years but to finally see him cut loose live….we were just blown away.

A few years ago I was at a Michael Landau concert. I stood in the first row right in front of the stage and kept looking at his fingers. I had never seen him on stage up to that point. After playing his last encore, he walked straight up to me, shook my hand and left the stage. It was an unexpected but very nice surprise and somehow I felt even more connected to this guitarist from then on than before.

One of my all time favorite instrumental guitar tracks. I remember when my guitar teacher (Berklee) played me this track in the tiny little practice room at school. We actually sat there and listened to the entire album for the entire duration of what was supposed to be a half hour lesson. I was speechless, blown away by how creative and unique the sound of this album was. At the time that he made TFTB, he was playing on some of Joni Mitchell's most artistically adventurous albums and he created similar sounds, especially his clean tones and volume swells with delays/ambience, which is something he is really the master of. You can hear the Jeff Beck influence on Michael Landau but there is so much further nuance in what he's doing that would take millions of close listens and a sampler to catch. Shawn, your playing has a similar liquid quality to Landau's and that's what caught my ear initially and turned me on to your work. All of which is brilliant. Mike Landau has been a major influence on me as well; more from his sonic approach and the way he creates a mood with guitars; beautifully crafted, expressive layered guitar arrangements.

Definitely one of my top 3 influences, too. He truly does just keep getting better and better, which is so inspiring. He's like if Hendrix had lived long enough to play with Miles Davis and fall in love with Nirvana.

The Raging Honkies has arguably some of the greatest strat tones on it, in my opinion. Incredible stuff. The intro of this solo reminds me of Ed. They grew up drinking the same water so it’s no surprise.

What amazed me about that song is you get this kinda/sorta dirty single coily sound for the main riff and when it goes to the pristine clean tone effected sound it really blew my mind. A very orchestrated sound. I also find that it's one of the rare "guitar instrumental" records that can be enjoyed by people who don't play guitar. Despite the fact that it's really cool from a guitar player standpoint, he really created an accessible set of tunes where you don't necessarily need a degree in musical physics to understand it.

Nice choice Mr. Tubbs, For those not familiar you can catch him playing this song live at several venues on You Tube , live his switching between dirty raw tones and clean tones is just so musical and impressive. also interesting how he, like you, takes so many influences and make them his own. For him I hear Beck and Hendrix influences the most , building on those adding to his very unique style. IMO he is a tone master, love watching how he is constantly moving tone volume and pick up positions in the midst of a song..perfecting the sound. Love your playing/videos thanks for sharing.

Awesome Shaun, I'm so not surprised he's an influence of yours, so strong in your playing I hear it well... I got the original Tales CD in 1991 way back, being also just a huge huge fan, and much like upon hearing Eruption for the first time, I'm Buzzed affected me the very same, maybe even hit me harder. The finest iconical rack tones in that day on that record IMHO. Abbandanato not far behind. Kudos bro.

Hi Shawn. First - to answer your question - oh yes, I definitely like those kind of material! And I wrote it under another Video from you: I love your approach so much. Not aiming for the exact tone, but take the inspiration and just give it a go...Playing along is always helpful to strengthen your musicality and skills. Don't try to end as a copy cat. Thumbs up for sharing your thoughts, Shawn. Best greetings. Michael.
