This is interesting to me coming from a rowing background Rowing and Track cycling are very much power/endurance sports In my experience, the best rowers are guys who have a background in high level strength or power training of some sort and then start the high volume aerobic and anaerobic training Seeing very lean cross country style athletes come into the sport and perform well is rare, it seems incredibly hard to increase your power while training this way as a natural athlete, but starting with that base and just maintaining it whilst growing your aerobic base is hugely advantageous
@jayjayloks69653 жыл бұрын
hey a fellow rower! I row for my universities rowing club! I always thought that people from cross country could crossover pretty well. They are surprisingly strong with weightlifting; nothing cray but its surprising.
@thepeatboggy3 жыл бұрын
@@jayjayloks6965 Haha whats up man, where you row? You’re right though , Exceptional athletes can come from anywhere, but I think my point is more that its hard to develop a good strength base when you’re neck deep in a high performance program rowing 20-30k most days The best rowers I saw develop through the HP pathways, are the ones with huge strength bases to begin with, intermediate - high performance athletes definitely struggled to get stronger alongside the required Milage With Juniors tho , I don’t think this effect is as pronounced

@@thepeatboggy ahhh it's those with a solid foundation who seem to progress quite well. I see what your saying. @@jayjayloks6965 I wish you well sir! I was a dirty lightweight for about 3 years here in belfast, Northern Ireland, just about pulled 6:30 last year Now I’m trying to bulk up and pursue strength sports for a year or two now before coming back to the sport. My various 2ks are still probably the most pain I’ve ever experienced
@Second2472 жыл бұрын
Infact it's other way around, been in this domain for decade now (powerlifting and rowing/cycling/running/kettlebell sports). Base season is the best moment to increase strength, it's high intensity lactic worksouts which are really pesky to combine with strength training. But while lobbing endurance workouts it's very easy to do put emphasis on strength. In competitve season it's hard to put anything productive into gym while one should hit high quality endurance workouts. I've put 800 hours for last two years and been able to add kilos to bar while getting better and better on bike (i use powermeter so i have objective meter to monitor my progress). Issue comes from weight, endurance sports in general penalize from weight while strength sports require it (and increase it). That's where the rubber hits the road. Physically it's possible to get both stronger and aerobically fit at the same time, but added weight makes aerobic gains not to show in performace. Track cycling and indoor rowing being pretty much only sports where weight doesn't matter much. Thou i can always compete in Zwift and report my weight as 40kg (while weighting 80+kg) :) That's where i'm at now, i'm on door steps to be pretty competitive in cycling but my weight is harming my ability to compete (or even qualify into higher rankings) and powerlifting in the end is very boring sport. So now i try to maintain over 2x bodyweight in squat while dropping weight for cycling.

Even though this kind of hybrid competition is novel, it seems that the kind of training it requires has been around forever, in one form or another. Rugby players, wrestlers, judoka etc. all need both a high degree of cardiovascular capacity as well as high levels of top-end strength and explosiveness (in addition to their respective sport-specific abilities).
@jordywilliams3 жыл бұрын
was doing this with gym work and cycling but after a point the two just don't help each other at all and you get mediocre results from both, especially in the gym with deadlifts and squats. I now train for the 2k on the indoor rower and its much more of a better balance. Rowing rewards being bigger and stronger, whilst still needing to train aerobically. Now every session I do is improving a singular goal. Improving my 1rm deadlift and 30min power on the rower or bike, improves my 2k

I guess I am personally interested in these hybrid athletes because I wish that some cardio benchmarks existed for strength athletes.
@moistmayonese12053 жыл бұрын
It is hard to establish cardio benchmarks for strength athletes. Even something like VO2max is somewhat specific to the activity you are doing. So having high VO2max measured on bike does not necessarily mean that you can recover well from a longer deadlift set. However, if an athlete can’t do squat 10 reps and be ready for another set in 3-5 minutes, some GPP is probably necessary.

You can't optimally raise every athletic quality at once. It really doesn't matter if you're just trying to be fit and improve body composition, but if improved athletic performance in a team/traditional sport is the goal I think this is extremely suboptimal. That is why I don't understand the organization of training in crossfit. It will certainly turn you into an endurance/aerobic monster with high muscle endurance, moderately decent strength speed, etc. But, you could certainly organize it in a way: absolute speed/explosive movements 1st, dynamic movements/strength speed 2nd, absolute strength 3rd and then go ham on endurance. I just don't understand using technical dynamic movements like the snatch or clean & jerk for max reps or endurance. This is also suboptimal, but you certainly aren't improving "explosiveness", speed strength or strength speed with higher reps in a severely fatigued state.

Howiye lads, mixing running and weights is something I've become more interested in on the list few years. I started out playing sports with lots of running with some bro lifting and then stopped playing team sports and moved into more weightlifting and powerlifting for a few years. Like a lot of people I became lazy with the cardiovascular stuff and became a bit husky and got into a small bit of running a few years ago. Last year completed my first marathon while lifting relatively heavy two to three times a week. What I've tended towards (naturally fell this way) in the last couple of years is focus more on lifting during the winter months and during the summer drop a day or two of lifting for more running/cycling to get outside a bit more. While waiting for the hybrid programme would you recommend doing the powerlifting blocks and weight training 2/3 days a week and training endurance another 2/3 days a week? And just be conscious of run/ride intensity/load around heavier lifting days? Cheers! keep up the good work!

Great video! Would be interested to hear your thoughts on someone like the bioneer or his approach to training "holistically" for being in great all round shape in general I guess...also curious about what you'd consider to be the ultimate GPP phase (if it's even a thing on it own) and is it something you could maintain indefinitely and then specialise into whatever you wanted from it? Maybe like how the Royal Marines train

@@raymondsmith2040 that's not really hybrid tho, is it? Speed is a byproduct of power, and power output is directly related to strength training.
@raymondsmith20403 жыл бұрын
@@kblkbl They're related but still different modalities. A sprinter might have an impressive clean but it will never be like a Olympic weightlifter and an O weightlifter might be explosive but will never have the foot speed of a sprinter. Because they focus on different things. Alec tries to be the best he can be at both even though he's sacrificing being great at one.
@kblkbl3 жыл бұрын
@@raymondsmith2040 Sure but that's completely unlike what's being addressed in the video. Following this logic a weightlifter/powerlifter is a hybrid athlete, and that's okay, I just don't think it really fits the bill in the context of what's being discussed here in terms of concurrency.
