Mixed Martial Arts? Is it an endurance sport? A power sport? A CROSSFIT SPORT?! 👀🧠🤯 Where is it on the force-velocity curve? Everywhere????????! Also what happens to training programming if you're an amateur who does 3, 3-minute rounds instead of 3, 5-minute rounds? How much does this bias things towards speed and power, and how does one adjust their training once they go pro (thus entering that five minute round competitive environment)?

MMA is a multi modal sport with a frustrating combination of high technical requirements along with high aerobic demands with bursts of lactic and alactic power. Even within the sport you get guys that lean much harder on one side than the other, with fighters like Max Holloway being far on the aerobic side and someone like yoel Romero being mostly a lumbering giant who occasionally explodes into terrific violence.

Most publicly available programs are going to necessarily be somewhere between garbage to meh. If you want a great program you’re going to have to get one that’s made for and adresses your individual needs and circumstances.
@F-Tier_Physique3 жыл бұрын
@@kirby7475 yes. Ofcourse individualised programs are better in every way. But having specified which templates do certain things well and other things badly would go a long way to individualise them better for ourselves. Had my best results come from an intermediate Sheiko program for a sumo deadlifter and Mike Mentzer ideal program. Whilst the worst have been PPL and Westside conjugate unequipped. Id really like to see some good free templates highlighted that arent very popular also.

Hello hello, looking to try out jiu jitsu and I’d be curious to learn about how the force-velocity curve should impact s&c training for that. Seems like sometimes you’re slowly squeezing, other times you’re quickly throwing. Is it a bit of both?
@alejandromagnobarrasa92443 жыл бұрын
Ive been noticing for a while, but that intro confirmed it. Eoin always gets on you for breathing loudly but I always thought I hear him breathe more than you. But it’s a stoic soothing breathe and doesn’t effect the video. I only started noticing cuz he brings it up. I really can’t hear you though maybe he’s deflecting or he feels your breathing is labored. Either way It’s one of the funnier things that you guys argue about on camera, but maybe take a yoga class together it would drive him crazy I think. Or if you want to fix it Buteyko breathing method. Don’t know if you’ve heard of it.

As MMA fighter I would find this very interesting. would striking be more at the speed portion of the curve, wrestling against the cage further towards force and grappling exchanges in open cage space moving along the curve depending on the techniques used? Would this also mean for example a fighter focused on cage wrestling could help even their game out with speed work in their s&c or play to their strengths with higher force s&c, and then flipped with a fast but weak striker? Been watching for a while now lads and absolutely loving the content keep up the good work!

Particularly interested in this. Since low body weight is so important, I'm curious what strength numbers road cyclists and long distance runners should aim for. When I was running, I got my 1rm squat from 60kg to 140kg, but my running got significantly slower because I gained 15lbs in the process
@iFlarsky3 жыл бұрын
I think there is probably a little bit of a difference in optimal training for those two, as running is probanly higher on the velocity curve and cycling a bit lower - also interesting to note that cycling is constant pressure while running is more like hitting the ground on each step

I used to train Muay Thai with very little S&C. I was by no means world class but when you look at boxers in Thailand, the only S&C work they really do is pull ups and aerobic work outside of the sport specific stuff, whereas western Muay Thai fighters do lots of S&C work and don't often win against Thais when they fight them. Obviously there's a lot of nuance in combat sports but it's not like the training in Thailand is some secret art. Their training is well documented and well shared with the rest of the world. Maybe it's more for a Sika Psychology video where they're simply better because they are fighting out of poverty over there contrasted with the west where we train for different reasons. I was there for 3 months and got really quite good with their style of training as tough as it was. Maybe with S&C we'd see more longevity in the careers of boxers in Thailand because they tend to start at age 9, peak at 17/18/19 (becoming Lumpinee and Rajadamnern stadium champs), then fight in the west (usually making fools of us in regards to skill margins) after having amassed 200+ fights before retiring in their mid to late 20s. Would be great to see you guys include Muay Thai in for next video! Thanks for the amazing content as always.
@Dorsiazwart3 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to comment on this because it also took me a while to see the ‘light’ of science based S&C as a boxer myself. The fact of the matter is that a great athlete will almost always be great regardless of their supplemental training. The lads have done a reaction video on Lebron James’s training and it was the shittiest training I’ve seen, but Lebron makes it work regardless since he’s a great athlete. The worst thing bad/inefficient training can do is injure or fatigue an athlete, and most great athletes have a very high work capacity and don’t get fatigued easily with or without PEDs already. A thai fighter who normally does a lot of sparring and has been doing it since his youth will still be good even if he does bad S&C. Reasons for this are culture and selection. Muay thai is in thai culture; they train since youth and they have decades of knowledge of the sport itself - far more than the west. And since it’s so popular the competition a fighter faces is obviously tough, meaning that only the best fighters come out on top. Compare that to the west where competition is far less and it’s no wonder these guys end up being so good with ‘bad’ S&C. Good S&C will still be the best way of increasing performance for the least gifted of us who don’t have access to the best knowledge and trainers, in my opinion.

I compete in strongman. One of the parts that make it fun is you actually have to be pretty good along most of the curve. Im very good at rate of force production and always score well in throwing events like weight over bar. I’m ok at rep events but struggle in the max events. Many of the guys that I’ve competed against, and even beaten, can deadlift 100lbs more then me. Even cardio plays a roll but it’s more like how long can you redline your body before you fall over.
