urea 46-0-0 is perfectly fine to apply as a granular. I do it all the time on tall fescue with up to 1lb nitrogen per 1k.

Yep! My Bermuda loves it and continually asks for more! I would like to try applying a granular as liquid for equal coverage.
@Chrisbennett-k5h
@Chrisbennett-k5h 2 ай бұрын
@@Aurelian57 you will get better coverage spraying. I just wouldn’t apply more than .2lb N at a time. You could do that every week or two if you need more nitrogen.

An even cheaper source of nitrogen would be to use diesel exhaust fluid, which is about 30% urea and the rest water. It would also be far easier since it's basically already pre-mixed. Using 19 oz. per 1k sq feet gives you .2 lb. of nitrogen, and diesel exhaust costs pennies per ounce.

I have always been surprised more people don't do this. One thing you may want to look is doing the same thing with Ammonium Sulfate. It's a 21-0-0 but it's a bit quicker release than urea for those events you want a greener lawn for. Golf courses do this and it's SO much more cost effective than any other way of getting nitrogen on the plant.

So is AMS easier to desolve? Also does it help with growth or just make greener

However, the salt content of urea is negligible compared to that of Ammonium Sulfate, thereby minimizing burn risk on your lawn if applied frequently or in hot temps....or over applying for that matter. I've used urea at close to 2x the 1 lb nitrogen per 1000 sq ft per month normally recommended amount, with no burning whatsoever. I have a very sandy soil and nitrogen just leaches through like crazy, so I started spoon feeding urea at a higher - than -recommended rate with feeding every week to every 10 days, and so far so good. Any thoughts?

Hi, I actually don't have any idea what the % is. I know I dissolve 8lbs total of the granules in each 25-gallon batch of spray and I haven't had any burning problems at all. Thanks!
@reidgreven6948
@reidgreven6948 6 ай бұрын
Based on the math of 8 lbs \ 25 gal, that’s .32 lbs of Urea per gallon. Urea is 44-0-0, so .32 x .44 = 0.14 lbs of N per gallon. You said a 25 gallon tank covers 1/2 an acre, so roughly 22k sq ft. That’s about 1.14 gallons per sq ft. 1.14 x .14 = roughly 0.16 lbs of N per 1k sq ft. You’re right, that’s just enough for a little green up and no burn via spray application.

Any thoughts on using DEF which is already in liquid form? DEF is a 32.5 % solution of high-purity, synthetically manufactured urea in de-mineralized water.

I took your advice and just got off the mower. I mixed 6-7 pounds of urea per my 16 gallon sprayer tank. I was only able to get 100 pounds of urea on my lawn. When I spread 46-0-0 I normally use 150-250 pounds on my 4 acres of Bermuda spread thin. I would say I used double your rate per acre but 1/2 of my spread rate. Time will tell.

It's a short term spike in nitrogen, absorbed through the green not the root. I helps for about 2-3 weeks for me.

Great video… I didn’t quiet catch it but what weight of urea granules do you use to make one gallon or better still 5 Liters of final product? And what area would 5 L of final product cover? Approximately. Thank you..

So my sprayer holds 25 gallons in a full batch. What I do is dissolve 8lbs of urea granules in 3-4 gallons of hot water in a 5-gallon pale and then I dump that mixture into the 25-gallon sprayer and fill it up to the top. In the end it's 8lbs urea to 25-gallons water but I could easily go up to 10lbs, I just use 8lbs so I can treat my entire yard in 5 batches that I get from one 40lb bag. Hope that helps. Thanks!

Fair play to you for sharing your concentration of Urea. Any idea what area do you cover per gallon of your diluted 25 gallon mix..
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
About 1/2 acre is how much a full sprayer gets me. So I guess maybe 875 square feet per gallon of diluted mix. Another rough estimate would be 1 pound of granules per 2,500-3,000 square feet. Hope that helps.

how many gallons does your sprayer hold? what is your application rate? i.e. 1 gallon/1000sqft.
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse 3 ай бұрын
Sprayer holds 25 gallons and I add 8lbs of granules when I apply. I'm not sure exactly how many lbs/acre or gallongs per 1000sq ft. I just drive at a normal pace like when cutting grass and fill up when I'm empty. If I had to guess, I'd say a gallon per 1,000 sq ft is what I do. I've just adjusted to what I found works and would suggest starting there. So that would be about 1/3 of a lb per 1,000 square feet. It's not much.

@@danimalshouse so if you're using a 46-0-0 urea you're applying about 0.147 lbs N / 1000sqft

Do you time this to before a rain event? And I believe you have said that you apply this early in the morning, but have you ever applied it in hotter months of the year? Or is it for those spring, rainy months? Finally, ever had tip burn issues with 8lbs urea per half an acre? Thanks.
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse 5 ай бұрын
I haven't found that the timing matters as long as the grass is in the growing season. I apply in the morning so I can see my tire tracks before the morning dew dries to get an even coverage in the large areas, otherwise I overlap too much or potentially miss sections. The nitrogen gets absorbed through the greens vs. the root so as long as the spray has a few hours to soak into the greens before rains it should work fine. I have used it in the summer and it works then too but will work best if applied just before a predicted rainfall so the plant will actually grow. Hope that helps.

How many times a year do you do this same application? I assume since you are applying less N with liquid this way, you need quite a few applications per year? Thanks
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse 7 ай бұрын
I usually don't do it every year. I live in the country so if the grass isn't perfect it just blends in with the neighbors. When I have an event like a grad party or otherwise I do like to do it twice about 3 weeks apart with the party 1 week after the 2nd application. Weather is the largest influence but extra food for the plant goes a long way for keeping it looking healthy. If I was in town I'd go every 2-3 weeks with a light dose. I do a weed killer every fall as well. Hope that helps.
