Tech stealing is insane. My first game I got an event where I found an advanced "empire" that just sat around in its own system. This empire seemed to have every tech in the game unlocked and was basically impossible to invade at my tech level. Then I got spies and spent the next century stealing advanced tech that I should not have had over and over again until I had light carriers invading my neighbors who could only get light cruisers to counter me. It absolutely needs to be nerfed, or at least, make it so the AI prioritizes trying to defend, as while I was stealing everything not nailed down, the ai was spending their spies trying to get my colonies to rebel, which wouldn't happen thanks to the troop tech I stole from them.
@meroddaglenholm79242 жыл бұрын
I start stealing from pirates as soon as I get a spy. They tend to have a decent tech selection (Identical for all pirates from what I can tell) so it's just a matter of finding the easiest to steal from. This is usually a pirate of the same race since your spies will not stand out as much. On the flip side I have rarely, if ever, seen much skill progression when I set my spies to counter intelligence. Even if I capture a spy, the spy I have had on counter intelligence does not seem to gain anything. As such, unless I have notices of tech being stolen, I tend to keep all spies on steal tech/map missions which gives a good return for concealment and espionage skills and starts unlocking the traits.

Big fan of the old DW:U, just got the game today (I tried not to look into any spoilers and thus missed release date by a couple weeks) and came looking for a way to retrofit the ships - which the context menu did. Thx. First game, pre-warp, hard difficulty and got visited by 3 pirate factions (in one in-game week) after I found my first source of fuel. Had to appease 2 of them, while the third one liked me from the start. Now that's what I call fallen-empire-feeling. Game has it's flaws, but man I'm already loving it for so many details done right. I mean, when you find an abandoned station and it's component list tells you, along with a ruin or so, the story of it's system. So immersive.

@@PartyElite Nice job. I've got a question, which you might be able to answer. I've got at least two planets in my current game which have unexplored ruins. I don't know why I even know about the ruins, when I wasn't given an option to explore them. But I'm planning to send an exploration ship back to both planets. My question is, do I need to assign the ship to "survey" the planet or "explore" it? Or does it matter? Again, I did have a ship there, earlier. I don't know why these ruins weren't explored then. But do you know which order I should give to the ship that returns there? (I've got both kinds of sensors on the ships.) Also, a little tip about pirates. With assault pods (along with ion weapons and some kind of blaster or beam weapon), it seems pretty easy to _steal_ those advanced ships from the pirates, instead of just destroying them. They give you better ships, yourself, or you can just dismantle them for a tech boost. It's pretty useful. Thanks.
@timmietimmins37802 жыл бұрын
I haven't really found extra docking bays to be worthwhile for a spaceport (As it's not that hard to get resources in and out already, you CAN put a second construction yard on your starting spaceport (At least, you can for humans and teekans, I am not sure about the others, other than ackdarians, who obviously can't as they get a free spaceport). this gives you a second building and refitting queue, AND a second docking bay. Makes refitting your fleet or building up for fighting pirates WAY faster and easier. Also, they are literally free, as they cost no resources, and therefore, have no upkeep OR build cost. As for fighting pirates, I didn't realize this at first, but each faction has very different ships, to the point that some races just don't have viable early frigate builds. I have settled for zenox, for example, going for mass heavy escorts, simply because you can't really get any decent large weapons to put on the size 120 frigate weapon mount. But a heavy escort can mount Dual medium concussion launchers (the true bane of pirates, these things obliterate pirates). I would say the best loadouts I have found so far for pirate hunting: Humans do well with concussion missile spam from frigates. Minimal tech, very powerful. Ackdarians can make strike craft frigates, which are INSANELY powerful. Strike craft obliterate enemies at incredible speed. Zenox have to really go heavy escort concussion missile, because their frigate's hardpoints require tech 3+ weaponry to be efficient. Delaying for star beams is not practical. I feel it's a trap to go for most other weapon systems, simply because more advanced enemies have high countermeasures (minus chance to be hit). If you have an inherently inaccurate weapon, firing at an inherently hard to hit enemy, you can rapidly fall off the cliff of "I can no longer outpace the enemy's passive regen". To give you an idea, enemy strike craft can have over 100 countermeasures at game start. Early ion weapons have 40% accuracy at max range. concussion missiles have 70% accuracy at max range, but that max range is twice as far. This also prevents fights from turning into the annoying scrum, where your ships try to ram into the enemy ship and then cannot turn fast enough to bring weapons to bear. Seeking missiles have 360 fire arcs, so you don't have to fly towards the enemy to do damage and you cannot be stuck unable to turn to face.

Use automation and learn the game slowly. Once comfortable, experiment with automation off or suggest only. I find I use automation for many things after tightly controlling first 10 to 20 colonies, make sure economy is stable, then let the AI manage many areas except wars. One thing I do highly recommend learning first is upgrading ship designs manually. The AI isn't that good at it, you can much more easily build better designs if you learn how. Just takes time.

I think mining stations are quite a bit more valuable as you can encourage freighter production to boost your economy with a bit more predictability (since you can't build mining ships outside of being a mercantile empire). Freighters can also be made faster, and able to carry more You just need to make sure not overdo it too quickly, since you might crash the private economy.

Don't know how it is for other factions, but Ackdarians (I think I got that right) start with the option of restoring an Ancient Space Port above their homeworld. It's vastly superior to anything you will have access to for a good few ingame decades so don't make the mistake of 'retrofitting' it. The space port you can put together with early tech will perform at about 10% of what the Ancient one can do.

So helpful! Could you explain colonizing a bit? I have four worlds colonized for many years, and they're all still costing me thousands. They're water worlds and I'm the water race, all quality over 35% etc. All at over 300 mil pop and growing well, but the support costs are insane.
@hoabinh5552 жыл бұрын
I've heard that quality needs to be over 50% for the penalty cost to not be a factor. Think the formula is quality minus 50 plus race bonus so you'll need another race or better tech.
@IIIJG522 жыл бұрын
The colonization Techs are very helpful. Ive jumped 10k income on saved support costs in my 20 colony empire by researching the improved versions sometimes. Especially early on you simply cant afford to colonize many different worlds, so its better to find a really good one and start there, or colonize an independant colony instead. Colonys only really become somewhat profitable at the 800Million Population mark id say. If you raise taxes too early the growth goes down a LOT.
@salientblue65842 жыл бұрын
The metric you want to look at is habitability. +20 or higher means the planet is good and will have minimal support costs. +10-19 means it's doable but support costs will be higher. Less than +10 you shouldn't bother with. You'll often find planets that fit your race's type, but the habitability will be very low, possibly in the negatives.

Colonies become profitable actually after 2kM pops And you need to have at least 20+ sustainability for them to ever make profit Quality and sustainability are not the same btw

Cool! I had an idea both stations and ion weapons had a lot of potential, and especially the combination. Stations have so much room on them, maintenance will be a bottleneck before room until you are a huge empire, right? Besides stealing tech, a huge fleet of exploring ships (on auto) will let you find ancient debris and ship wrecks that can be repaired. MonstersAbound could have just been lucky and find a treasure trove, but finding a bunch makes for running start. Would you design combined explore/survey ships or have specialised ships and do both faster? Would a big combo refuel survey ship be an idea, with docking bays and lots of tiny explore ships assigned to each? Would you add a space station to every interesting planet? Could be expensive, but cool. I think I saw upkeep was a few hundred, much less than a colony but it won't go down. They could act as fly catching strips to pirates, especially with ion weapons. Are mining stations upgradable to be militarily strong and get the same modules (research, trade, medical, recreation)?
@IIIJG522 жыл бұрын
Large Mining Stations with decent-ish midgame tech can fend off single or dual pirate ships fairly easily. The problem with those ideas isnt really upkeep, but hull size on most stations. If you put everything they need for their original mission on them, they dont have the space left for weapons and armor From my experience so far.

I have stopped playing and waiting for patches. It has a potentially but right now the game is too clunky and buggy. So far the biggest annoyance was when creatures spawning too fast and my 3 fleets were unable to deal with them as they were very clunky and unresponsive. I had to lower ship count in fleets yet they still managed to get stuck either attacking monster inside a star or by refueling when the last ship was blocked by another one and it efficiently blocked the base for all other ships including cargo and remained there until I noticed and manually moved them away. Another time wrong colony ship was assigned to colonize a planet and it ended with unsuitable population which stalled colony's progress and I was unable to migrate suitable species there for the rest of the game. Also multiple designs per ship role are still not addressed (inherited from DW:U). I generally have mixed feelings about it compared to DW:U. There are some upgrades over it but AI seems far worse, pathfinding as well, ship design is more limited due to slots so you cannot be that creative anymore. Far more tedious upgrade of ship and especially base designs. Why there need to be 3 identical small space ports with different sizes? In DW:U you simply researched greater size and you could easily update your current designs to it but here you have to design space port 3 times from scratch. Also there is obvious lack of content. I get simplification in mining as there is no longer gas/mineral/luxury miner but simplification to only one fuel type is disappointing. In DW:U I usually had military and civilian ships using different fuel. Also it has the same design "flaw" in research/ship components with interesting mid game where components split into variety of subtypes with different pros and cons just to merge into one super component for the late game that is best in all parameters.

I like getting protection agreements with pirates of my own race (current game about 1/4 of the pirates are human) as you can get other treaties with them faster (you no longer paid the protection money if you can get above a non-aggression pact) and now I have some free defense in my empire. I like to think that you are turning the "evil" pirate band into a "good" privateer or mercenary outfit.
@steeneugenpoulsen81742 жыл бұрын
I find your advice on research labs weird, you do know that the lab is a 60 size and a SSP/MSP only has one, so how are you adding more than one? Research Station does come with two, but even then a very hard limit, due to requiring a special and super rare unit size slot, so why would you throw in adding more, you can either add one on space ports or two on research stations. Now if you would talk about the fact you might be able to add labs to mining ships, now that is something I doubt many people will consider. A mining ship has a 100 size slot, but we also have the small miner, so could put a lab in the 100 size slot. Oh and mining stations with labs perhaps.

Appreciate the feedback! I try as much as possible (and perhaps I should change this) to state things in a way that lets people know what to check for notionally, rather than be precisely prescriptive. This keeps things open for future updates where devs might tweak things (like how many bays of what size are available), for future mods that might tweak things in a similar vein, and also, hopefully, it allows people to take the suggestions and run with them a little. I also have a tendency to belabour a point, and I try to keep these concise - it's very possible I overcorrect at times!

This game is soooo boring. I mean you can just pop some auto explore, approve mining station popups and crush AI whenever you feel like it. Why do I need to colonize independent colonies who are willing to join anyway? Pirates are boring and easy to deal with. Events are simply pay 10,000-25,000 for a buff with a minimal markup. Automatic ship designer put bomb module into everything. Diplomacy is as bland and uneventful as in almost any other space SIM. Colony managment is even more boring than rest of the game. Public sector serves no purpose beside being a speedbump on colony taxes. This is ultimate 4x forward self play. Only good thing is space battles and unit designer. But again even Star Sector got better one so it's not saving grace. It means you can do something while the game autoplays. And sure I don't need to turn on autoplay. I don't have to autopopulate excel sheet either and type everything manually but is it fun?
