This is the best comprehensive video on distillation I’ve been able to find on You Tube, seriously. 👏 Thank you for explaining a lot of the reasons for why and how each step is used and it’s importance. I learned a lot from your video, your a very good Teacher. 👍👏

For fractional distillation, is a column packed with glass beads more or less effective than a Vigreux column?
@johnblacksuperchemist25563 жыл бұрын
Alexandre..........The beads are way more effective. But please do not use beads unless you just pack a vigorex column with an inch or 2 of beads in depth. I tried packing a vigorex half way full with beads. What happened was it takes SO FREAKING LONG for the vapors to get past the beads it is unreal. I did it once with beads and i will never do it again. Although that was 30 years ago with my very first lab. So maybe it was just my inexperience why it wasn't working good. Also i used small beads. There were not enough spaces in between the beads for the vapors to get by it easily. So if you do buy some beads try to buy ones that are irregularly shaped so there are big enough cracks for the vapor to get by. I used SMALL spheres slightly bigger than a BB from a BB gun. Maybe buy dodecohedren or cylinder shaped beads. If you want to pack a column instead of using a vigorex column i SUGGEST using quarts wool and LOOSLY pack the column. The wool will allow a LOT of contact with the vapors so as to condense them BUT NOT HINDER THE VAPOR FROM PASSING THROUGH IT like beads do.

Post distillation, how is the distillate removed, past the greased joint? Is it simply poured out? What are the chances of contamination by the grease? (If using a suction tool, some distillate will be left at bottom of flask? E.g. water/oil?)
@johnblacksuperchemist25563 жыл бұрын
Alexandre...........Unless you are using VACUUM distillation do NOT grease your receiving flask. It is not necessary to grease because there is no vapor on the receiving side of the distillation apparatus. If you use vacuum distillation remember you are only supposed to use a very little bit of grease. When you are done with the distillation and disconnect the receiving flask get a piece of toilet paper or paper towel and shove it in the flask with your finger and clean off the grease before you pour out of the contents in the receiving flask. If you do that you should have not problems. Keep in mind also that most grease for chemistry is inert so a couple MOLECULES of it in your product wont matter much. Not sure what your last question is asking about the water/oil thing and some distillate left at the bottom of the flask. If you elaborate on that maybe i can answer it.

GREAT VIDEO .......I never heard of a boiling point differential being 25C being the deciding point of weather you simple distill or fractionally distill. I have seen MANY times where it was stated to be 50C. I personally NEVER simple distill anything. I mean it only takes a second to put a vigorex column on the apparatus. And a few extra minutes to heat up the vigorex column. I do not see the purpose in SIMPLE distillations

Please tell me where to buy a water distiller that uses a vacuum pump that uses much less energy power than the energy used by the regular boiling of water for the distillation of water. My regular Waterwise water distiller costs about 40 cents a gallon for distilled water , and I use more than 500 gallons a year ( $ 200/year + ). Where may I buy a vacuum pump that would be acceptable for drinking the water from the water vapor that passes thru it ( that is water not mixed with oil or metal ) ?
@MatanuskaHIGH5 жыл бұрын
trader0108 you’re in he wrong place. Also why would you distill water for drinking? It’s not healthy you need minerals.
@jamesmabe6224 Жыл бұрын
There are 2 different types of air pumps that are made to be used with water soluble’s only and pumps that can be used with more dangerous liquids that are flammable. You don’t want to use the wrong pump because it can ignite any flammable vapors if they leak back into the pump. If you look on Amazon you should be able to find what your looking for easy. Good luck, be safe.
