I am so glad to have found your channel! Although I wish I had found it sooner. I'm really looking forward to learning how to get all of that clay out of your plaster mold. I tried to make a latex mask for my son (he wanted to be Sloth from the movie Goonies) and it turned out okay, not as perfect as I had hoped, but I really struggled getting the clay out of the mold. I had followed another KZbinrs advise and used wood glue as a barrier between the clay and the plaster and it really did not work well for me at all, I will use the gloss Kryolan paint from now on. Can't wait for the next video :)
@tylerjordanguitar8 жыл бұрын
great video ed! question-- why does some of my latex not cure in the mold? just little spots here and there. could it be the sealer that i use on the sculpture that gets absorbed into the plaster mold? i used glossy rustoleum sealant. i will for sure use krylon next time. Thanks again for your videos.
@eviledwin7778 жыл бұрын
It could have stuck to the mold and is not allowing the latex to absorb. Or it could be a contaminant. Be sure and let the Krylon dry over night.

This is a great series! I have a quick query though--first time sculpt/mold; I let my clay dry and harden first, and I want to put plaster on the sculpture, but I'm wondering if I'll be able to remove the dry clay from the mold...should I just cut my losses, start over, and apply plaster while the clay is still damp and flexible?
@joewillisinvisible Жыл бұрын
So you sprayed the clay with the leather gloss? And it turned hard like so?
@No-limits-7 жыл бұрын
Can you do in fiberglass or liquid plastic
@jasonlara7 жыл бұрын
Would it be possible to stop at the point when you spray painted the clay (by the way, did you spray it while the clay was still damp? or was it completely dry?) and then hand paint the face to display on the wall like a plaque? I don't need to make masks, I just would like to sculpt half-heads and display them. Hope you can help. Thanks.

So, instead of using compressed air, could you use water to get the clay out? Or would that damage the mold?
@eviledwin7775 жыл бұрын
Yes water would work, a water pick is great!
@Symbolicliving5 жыл бұрын
The clay removal from the pottery plaster seems like a tough job. Is there a way that silicone or something rubbery and flexible is used to make the mold instead of the pottery plaster so it just pulls off easily?
@iLoafCallumKay5 жыл бұрын
You could use silicone, but you're going to get a much better casting with a plaster mold. You could always try a fibreglass mold too. Plaster is always the best, and cheapest, though

Hi I hope you guys still respond to questions on this video! If I am making a full head mask that covers the entire face would I want to cast the entire head in one setting or split it between the sides of the head, i am also using oil based clay that I've been told is reusable, does this mean I should not spray it with the paint?

you can use burlap to add strength to mold! add 3 lays to mold after do detail bush soaking barlap in your plaster. ultcal 30 what you nomal use to make foam molds if you plan to run foam in it.

do you reuse your clay over and over again? Or do you know that technique?
@PokemonButcher6 жыл бұрын
What purpose does spray-painting the sculpted clay serve?
@eviledwin7775 жыл бұрын
Seals the clay so plaster doesn't get corrupted losing some of it's surface water to the clay.
@mpotpolak8 жыл бұрын
Might be a silly question, but is the sculpt pretty dry before you paint it? & is the paint keeping the clay from attatching to the mold? (Love your work!)
@eviledwin7778 жыл бұрын
It is usually fairly dry before casting, but it doesn't have to be. The paint works well either way.
@Extreme_Horror_Phantom4 жыл бұрын
@@eviledwin777 Will the sculpture come off of the armature easily without the molding process? I want to focus on sculpting monsters first. Then learn about molding.
@DistortionsUnlimited4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well if you make sure not to let the clay dry too much than yes it will come off fairly easily and you can reuse it for a future sculpt to keep work on things. Have you watch our latest Monster Lab on WED clay? Ed goes over covering the sculpture and the quality of WED clay in that one in depth. But of course you can use oil clay also and that will not dry out.
