The reason people get annoyed when people say "it's an OCD thing" is because OCD is a diagnosable anxiety disorder, not just what you call a quirk. Obsessive compulsive disorder, and it can make people's lives terrible.
@wahlflower35172 жыл бұрын
I'm always reminded of Charlie talking about his OCD and it extended into his porn habits. He cried in front of his parents because he failed to finish at a specific point in a specific video. A "quirk" doesn't do that.
@NoriMori19922 жыл бұрын
We know that, though. That doesn't mean we can't use it as an analogy. Using it as an analogy for specific behaviours that resemble certain aspects of OCD, doesn't imply that _actual_ OCD is a mere quirk. There's no reason it would imply that, and no reason it should ever be taken to imply that.
@TaradaPryoNINJA2 жыл бұрын
@@NoriMori1992 I agree. I have dermatillomania, aka skin picking disorder, which is related to OCD. When someone says they have an OCD kind of behavior, I don't assume they have OCD, I assume they have a specific ritual they feel compelled to complete or face obsessive thoughts about not completing it. I also assume that they know that it is irrational but cannot stop themselves, much like how I know it isn't healthy to pick at scabs, acne, scars, or other blemishes/perceived dermatological flaws, but I cannot stop myself from obsessing over the fact that it is there and it should not be there. Unless they say that they have OCD, I don't assume they have it, I just figure that they're trying to explain that weird feeling of being compelled to do something you don't want to do in terms someone would find easier to understand. Now if they're bragging about having OCD and how quirky they are, that's a different story, but I don't see the harm in relating ritualistic obsessive behaviors to a disorder that is founded and built upon those same types of behaviors so long as the person isn't claiming to have OCD. I think it kind of helps normalize the disorder. It certainly helps me feel less disgusting when I see people who may not even have my disorder struggling with skin picking.
@lovelightstarboy2 жыл бұрын
@@NoriMori1992 Using an actual disorder that people struggle with to large extents as an analogy isn’t okay though. And a lot of the time it’s used as a joke. I don’t think Wade’s or Mark’s use of it is as a joke, there was no punchline, it was just something they did. I think it’s fine when used in certain circumstances, but not if it’s a joke, or if someone is just using it to be like ‘omg I always need to have everything clean, I’m so OCD’. Not only does it spread misconception of what they deal with, it paints people with OCD as not actually having to deal with terrible intrusive thoughts and compulsions and dumbs down to a ‘neat-freak’ issue. There are other ways you can make an analogy without using a serious disorder.
@EeveeDropk-k-s-k2 жыл бұрын
Also a reason why people really get upset about it is because of how much people glamorize it in media. They make it look like it's cool to have, or something that they can use to be "quirky". When in fact it isn't.

Regarding OCD or not OCD. You guys have mentioned some compulsions. The question is if you do not do those things do you believe something bad is going to happen? That's probably the first thing to think about to determine if something might be OCD. You know, before getting an actual diagnosis. As someone with severe OCD the thing that is most annoying is not the type of things you guys were discussing, which COULD be indicators, but rather the people who say "Oh, these two things aren't symetrical. That's going to bother my OCD!" Really? In what way? Do you believe that if they aren't symetrical someone you love is going to die? Do you then feel the need to perform some sort of ritual to prevent that from happening? Okay, that sounds like OCD. Is it just the fact that you like things to be symetrical? Then, no , that's not OCD. That's just liking things to be a certain way.

@@epicgammerboy2104 Hello! It is very probable that these podcasts will help you understand native speakers of american english. They are speaking very casually, adopting accents and voices to mix it up, and this is (in my experience) how many friends speak among one another. If you want to hear a native speaker speak composed english, which is more formal (not a dialect, just a different way of speaking), then perhaps find video essays on youtube. I recommend Savage Books, his english is very good and his video essays are interesting to someone who is interested in movies and film.

While it doesn’t completely rule my life I can’t leave the house without jiggling every door I lock to make sure it’s properly closed. I’m convinced that my remembering of locking a door is wrong and so I need to double check almost immediately after I already lock it. This extends to my dogs crate. She destroys the house if we leave her out while we’re gone so I have to put her away, I can’t leave the room without jiggling her locked crate door. No amount of convincing from myself or others has been able to stop it, and I feel real uneasy if I don’t.

My grandma has severe OCD but she doesn't think bad things will happen if she doesn't fix things, it just bothers her to the point that she HAS to adjust it. I have diagnosed OCD and one of my really bad Compulsions is being balanced on both sides, as in anything that happens on the left must happen to the right and vice versa, this implies to everything from scratching myself to a time I touched my left hand to a kettle and everything in my being demanded I do it again...I have the exact same scare mirrored on both hands now, I've gotten better over the years but it's still there of course, but I can stop hurting myself twice now, that biggest one is I'm deathly afraid of coins and metal that leaves a smell on my hands, I will not touch door handles, keys, tools, screws, etc without covering my hands or having gloves, if I touch it I need to wash my hands immediately, with money I can't touch it at all, and I feel extremely sick if I do, I haven't paid without card or contactless in probably 5 years, thankfully I live in the UK where literally everywhere has that as the standard option now

I also do the step on a crack thing! I'm also diagnosed with OCD and it is 100% an OCD behavior. Also Wade's brick counting is definitely in the same vein, I'd think It's not that you have to be debilitated by OCD [although for me it can be debilitating at times], it's that people use it too flippantly. ie. "lol I'm so OCD, look at my organized closet" or they refer to cleaning something as being OCD like it's an adjective for cleanliness.

In reference to the OCD thing (listened to this ep yesterday at work and it’s been bugging me a liddle ever since), the difference between what u described and what OCD is that OCD is an anxiety disorder based upon reoccurring intrusive thoughts (obsessions). Because of this, they have to do a certain activity a certain amount of times to soothe their brain (compulsions). What was described mostly just sounds like a human thing- patterns and counting numbers can be very fun and fascinating. It’s similar to how liking to keep things tidy doesn’t mean you have OCD, it just means u like to keep it clean. Hope this explains a lil!

Wade, please don't straighten yourself and tilt your head back before sneezing! It sounds like the wiplash your creating discombobulates you and it might even hurt your spine and neck. The next time you'll feel a sneeze coming, just try hounching over and prepare your hands to your face and steady your head mid-sneeze with them! Hope this helps

I was told that the reason we say "God bless you" after someone sneezes, is because it was once believed that sneezing was your soul trying to leave your body. Saying "God bless you" prevents this. It wasn't sneezing that prevented the soul leaving. It was the soul trying to leave through sneezing.

I always say "I'm not OCD, I'm particular" because I'm not diagnosed OCD. However, I do have to have routine and random things have to be done or eaten or placed in a particular way for me to feel okay. For example: I refuse to eat regular M&Ms because I have to line them up by colors a certain way, then eat them down proportionally. It takes like an hour. I have to eat pizza and other triangular things in a way that balances crust/inside all the way to the last bite. I will revert to using a knife and fork out of desperation to adhere to this. Things have their "spot" especially in relation to other things - like sets of items, books, etc. Edges lined up, alphabetical, etc and I will not be able to focus until it is fixed. I don't use a lot of time-saving things, like garlic peelers and or cut fruit, because I have to do it myself in a specific way, and each fruit has its own way to be processed based on shape and type of seeds/pits.

i actually do have OCD which leaves me with a very strange and incredibly taxing superstition in that I have to tap a white surface with my right hand 10 times or else great harm will come to me and/or my family. Which sucks, right? But there's also an aspect to it where if it doesn't feel right the first time, I have to do it again or the harm will multiply tenfold, BUT I can only perform it in groups of 4. So if I perform the superstition once but it's 'wrong', I have to do it three more times to make sure it works 'right'. And this happens like once every five minutes. So you can imagine how frustrating it is to live with lmao

I have ocd also, some days it’s relatively mild but sometimes it “flares up” and it’s awful😞 But I take one day at a time and things will and do get better❤️

Okay but the thing about sneezing is almost a superstition: in many Christian beliefs, sneezing is said to be your soul leaving your body - hence why people say “bless you” afterwards (presumably that saying allows your soul to come back)

As someone who is ocd, it is more often that your brain tells you things will go wrong if you don’t do that thing or if the thing doesn’t feel right. For example I pick at my eczema scabs because my brain tells me if I don’t get the fluff out of them that the fluff will grow into my skin and will stay there forever. To the point where I make myself bleed. I also pick at my skin for similar reasons. If I go to crack my knuckles and they don’t crack I get unreasonably stressed. If I’m in the car and don’t put my headphones on my brain tells me we’ll crash and die slowly and painfully. Like ocd more often then not comes with horrible intrusive thoughts that tell you graphic and horrific things that will happen to you and the people you love

Mark's OCD about stepping an equal amount of times with each foot on the sidewalk line at 45:27 surprised me, I have the exact same thing going on. in our apartment we have seams on the floor, and when going from one room to another I often try to either only walk on the seams, or on none at all. and if I acidentally walk or don't walk on one at some point, I feel obligated to do the same with the other foot...

44:00 Wade's actually completely accurate about the legitimate discrimination against black cats. They have the lowest adoption rates of cats and people do actually harm them out of pure superstition. My step-sister worked at a pet rescue once, and a woman came in and tried to strangle a black kitten while in the store. I honestly plead to people to consider the black cats more when looking to adopt. There are cruel, cruel humans out there. 🐈⬛🖤

A great episode as always! I remember when I first subscribed to Markiplier (around 250k - 300k I think?) after my sister told me about him. Mark's content saved my life. At one point - I was going through a very rough time in my life, and his content helped me have something to look forward to, something to *live* for. I know it sounds silly, but it's true. That said - I think I'm going to get a small pink mustache tattoo on the back of my left hand. Somewhere I can conceal it with ease (using literally any kind of glove) if I need to. I've never liked the idea of tattoos, I like clean skin, but I want to have a constant, physical reminder of the reason I'm still alive today. A souvenir of the man I've admired since I was a young child. I'm terrified of potential pain from getting the tattoo, but it's something deeply personal to me, and in the grand scheme of things, I guess I wouldn't mind a few minutes of pain if it means I get to show off the proud pink mustache of the man who saved my life. What do you guys think? Is this a good enough reason, or am I being dumb? Also, for the placement, I really like the idea of it being on the back of my hand, but I'm open to suggestions if it doesn't seem like a good idea. I'm not 100% sure about doing this, I've been thinking about it for a couple years, but I really am scared of pain.. I've been second guessing it due to that fear of pain. I know I'll need to 'face my fear' eventually, but it's really intimidating lol. Aside from the pain of it, I can't think of a single reason why not. I decided on the pink mustache because I like the idea of a symbol, not a face. I also like the idea of having something small, unlike the full channel logo. If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know. I definitely don't wanna get this tattoo and realize I could've gotten a better version later lol. Seriously though, I really would appreciate any advice I can get on this topic. And Markiplier: if you're seeing this, thank you for saving my life. I'm glad I didn't end it early
