DistroKid Teams: Adding Collaborators to your Music Releases

Collaborating with other musicians is one of the most rewarding experiences. But when it comes time to talk about $$$ and percentages it can get a bit awkward. Hey y'all! I'm so glad that you're getting something out of this video and have questions! I reached out to DistroKid directly and got some answers about releasing with another artist on both artist pages. Hope this helps! You can list up to 3 primary artists per release. Your release will show up on each artists' pages, in stores & streaming services. To specify a collaboration, just use an ampersand ("&") in your artist name. DistroKid will automatically detect this, and ask you if it's a band name, or a collaboration. Select collaboration. If the same artist is featured on all tracks, stores require that they MUST be listed as a primary release artist, instead. Collaborations take up an artist spot, even if one of the artists is already being used on your account. If you need additional slots, please visit distrokid.com/plan/ to upgrade.

What if you didn’t add the artist at the time of upload can you add them later

@@AuxDelow yes, in order for someone to be added to the team of a release they need to have a Distrokid account. When you add them to your team it’ll give them a discount link so that they can sign up if they don’t already have an account

@@rosemaryminkler I have distrokid but the other artist has tunecore and the single has been released but I’m not credited anywhere. The artist said they couldn’t add me without having to rerelease the song and I’m lost it doesn’t sit right

For anyone that is confused about the artist slots. Each collab takes up an artist slot. Just FYI. If you know you will be doing quite a bit of collaborations then you would have to get the label plan.

Hey Dante & Rosemary! Still a bit confused...in the video it says an unlimited amount of collaborators, but you're saying here each collaborator takes up an artist slot, which would only allow for one other person using the Musicians Plus plan? So clearly I'm missing something here. Any way either of you can clarify? (For context, I'm looking to do multiple tracks featuring a various artist on each one, so I'm just trying to figure out what's what!)

@@lakinmusic Distrokid made changes and now it's a lot easier to do collaborations. When uploading on Distrokid, there will be a featured artist section and you can add more artists from there.

@@DanteLevoTV Thanks for getting back so quickly! So are you saying that I could still upload multiple tracks featuring different artists while still on the Musicians Plus plan? And if that is so, what does it actually mean when it says "2 artists or bands" on that plan?

If me and my friend are dropping a song together but we are separate artist and this will be the first time we drop music would we need 2 separate distrokid accounts or just one ? So in the artist name we put each other with the & symbol ??

yeah, I believe you will have to each make an account :/ unless you both plan on only releasing music together. making separate accounts will be better in the long run especially when it comes to setting up transfer to your bank account for that $$$ hope this helps!

@@saulmuzic I guess that could work! I think the musician plan also allows you to release under several artist names so you don't necessarily have to go for the label plan. feel free to reach out to Distrokid directly, they seem to have good customer support. Good luck!

yes! the collaborator must have their own distrokid account and they can use that to upload their own music

I added Artist ( Artist 1 and Artist 2 ) Now whats the process from the other artist side ? Do he need to verify that he is on that feature track ?

Yes they should’ve gotten an email saying that they were added. They do need to have a distrokid account to be officially added but the email should include a discount code for them if they sign up. Congrats!

I was doing a song with another artist that is listed on my DIstrokId account. But if i was selection " Artist1&Arist2 Collaboration) it was creating a new account instead of uploading the song into our Artist profiles

Whatever you put in the "Artist/Band Name" box in the upload page is the artist page that it uploads to Spotify, iTunes, etc. If it doesn't find any page that fits that name exactly it will create a new page for the artist that you've inputed. Instead you should should upload with your name and then include the other artist's name in the title of the song like Song Name (feat. Artist 2). I hope this helps, definitely kinda confusing :/

@@rosemaryminkler what about with joint-collaborated albums? I don't want to have the artist i work with as a feature because the song/album is a joint-album, not just a song that he was featured on.

@@mikeyscv10 hmm that's a good question, you might both have to upload it under your own name? i'm not quite sure about this one to be honest. you could also just upload it as "Artist 1 & Artist 2" but I think that might make a separate page for that since it will see it as a new artist name :/ feel free to reach out to Distrokid directly, they generally have good customer support.
