@@muhammadmannapov I mentioned Erik Dubois (kzbin.infofeatured) because he has created informative linux articles numbering in the thousands. He is a great teacher if you are interested in Arch but you will learn about many desktop environments, how to create your own iso, how to use the Calamares Installer with Arch, etc. Take a look at the website (www.arcolinux.info/).
@andrewsymphony4 жыл бұрын
The main purpose of Arco Linux is that it is a learning distro for Arch. Nonetheless I use Arco Linux D for my main production machine. Eric Dubois produces tons of videos about arch. When you see many of these videos you really learn a lot and you get a huge amount of information for solving many problems in arch.

Endeavor os is a great arch distro because it is close to vanilla arch and comes with many desktop environments and a window manager which are xfce, mate, lxqt, i3-wm, cinnamon, plasma, gnome budgie and deepin. Since it is close to Arch it does not come with much bloat. I will agree that arcolinux comes with a lot of DE and WM. Manjaro also comes with good selection of DE and WM. Manjaro WM selection is limited however. My issue with arcolinux is getting nvidia card to work with it for proprietary vulkan drivers. I had no issues with properly installing nvidia drivers in Arch, Manjaro and Endeavor OS. I hope arcolinux fixed that issue.

I do totally agree on ArcoLinux. I have just replaced it with the now unfortunately discontinued ArchDeepin (which is based on ArchBang) and went on to try ArcoLinux B Deepin. This thing is just a beauty. Sure, some people call this a beginners distro but I beg to differ. The beauty about Arch and Linux in general is that a good distro gives you freedom of choice. If you are a noob you can feel at home and if you are some super hacker you can feel at home either way. Now whilst I am perfectly capable to install a Linux system the CLI way only, I don't see why I should as my needs are not that special that I would have to go through all this procedure. Whilst - and I am not trying to make Arch look bad in any way here by saying this - Gentoo for example at least gives me the advantage to compile stuff from scratch, using my custom CFlags and so on - well I even fixed this one with a rather simple bash script. So ArcoLinux is saving me tons of time while giving me the same if not even better experience and I can still do everything I want like I would be able to on any other Arch System thanks to being fully compatible. Now with Artix I beg to differ as for the compatibility part. Mostly you are right but because it is a non-systemd distro forget about things like getting the eg. AMD Ryzen optimized kernel from the AUR, they just won't work and the ones that are available to you are rather outdated and kind of defy the whole purpose of running such a bleeding edge distro like Arch. Now I don't hate systemd but I would in principle prefer something like OpenRC when it comes to boot times and some other things. However, compatibility is key and wins so Artix is out as far as I am concerned and to be fair it doesn't seem to be anyway as greatly maintained as ArcoLinux is. So to make a long story short, why would I want to invest a whole afternoon or so into a simple Linux installation when I can do the same with ArcoLinux in about 10-15 minutes?
@taidee4 жыл бұрын
Hey DT, I fully agree with you about Arco completely. Me only having one physical machine for playing with Linux means, I run mainline Arch (i3) as the main desktop but dual booting with ArcoLinuxB Xtended because of that glut of tiling wm managers. By the way you are the one who have inspired to look deeper into more tiling window managers like Xmonad and Qtile.
@enderger53084 жыл бұрын
Artix by default uses Gentoo’s OpenRC init system over SystemD, as SystemD has far too much built in (see Clear Linux for 100 things you didn’t know SystemD could do). Artix is designed to be a base distro like Arch itself. It also is built weekly, so yes it is active. Note that I’m a Gentoo user, so it’s not my main distro.

@stephenjames57454 жыл бұрын
Artix doesn’t see releases because it’s a rolling release distro like Arch. Arch doesn’t see releases either. The beauty of Artix is that you can choose your init system. An Artix system running the Runit init system for example uses about 100mb less after boot than Arch with systemd. It’s also a great distro for those of us who care about choice and adhering to the original UNIX philosophy in the Linux community. Artix has much more to offer in terms of uniqueness than most distros.

Then you realize that it's not Linux that you love its the UNIX philosophy and freedom you get. How many users do you think know about the kernel(which is called Linux, the rest is just coreutils and moslty systemd nowdays)? Even gentoo users mostly know about the parameters that kernel takes thats it. When systemd handles everything I will move to another OS like BSD.

Hey DT, been watching your videos for a while now. I really appreciate what you do. I love GNU/Linux, but I do use Windows heavily. I manage and maintain several hundred computers, websites, servers, switches, routers, etc. I've tried to use Linux where I can (mostly with websites), but one thing I've always wanted the Linux community to do is not reject Windows so severely. I get the whole proprietary software argument, but I wish the Linux community had more experience with Windows for the specific reason of improving GNU/Linux. The tools that Microsoft has developed (or acquired) are so far above the tools I've encountered in the Linux realm. I would love to be able to setup a file server for my clients running Linux, but geez, the headache involved in doing so pales in comparison to a Windows Server license. Am I crazy for thinking that one day Linux will be on par with Windows server as a viable alternative? I would love to be able to install a vanilla distro and get things like joining a Microsoft Active Directory, or being able to configure the things found in File Server Resource Manager, like storage reports, storage quotas, usage authorization, access control, etc. I feel like with Linux all I do is hit brick walls. Not trying to slam the Linux community at all but man I wish similar tools existed in the Linux realm that were easy to configure, easy to install/use, and easy to maintain.

@marioschroers73184 жыл бұрын
The systemd debate is a formidable example how nowadays even the slightest criticism on or disagree with anything is deemed »hate« and making use of freedom of choice you (still) have is deemed »protest«. The systemd issue has been concerning me a lot lately, and surely not because I »hate« systemd. I'm considering switching from Arch to Artix myself. And this is by far not a protest. We might actually assume that it's absurd how Arch is considered a distro for the knowledge user, but then, the knowledge user is left with no choice on the init system. This is rubbish. I love Arch, but this one criticism I have is a legit and a strong one for sure.

Because basically all the KZbin alternatives I see: PeerTube, LBRY, and how you host videos on your website, all include not only java script but also non-free java script (detected by GNU LibreJS addon that I use on IceCat). I remember that I watched some video of Richard Stallman on the FSF website and that definitely didn't require non-free java script and I think it actually didn't require java script at all, so it seems to me that it should be possible to host videos without java script or at least without proprietary java script. Man, I completely agree about the the Twitter and Facebook privacy issues. All aside from the data mining and selling your info to anyone who wants it. These platforms are inherently like opening you up as a book in ways that are often not thought of. Take for instance, you might be applying for a job and are a front-runner for the position. It is not unheard of for an HR dept worker to ping you on FB or some of the others just to use the platform as an added character witness and they, for example, find pictures of you and other marijuana advocates smoking a joint or maybe find a quote that paints you in a less-than-favorable political light. They aren't supposed to discriminate in many ways however some do and your resume finds it's way toward the bottom of the deck. It's one example but why mess with these sites when they seldom do most people any good? I've never been on FB and no longer even open my Twitter acct. YT is pretty much it for me and I try to be neutral as I can be. Thanks for the topic!

But then again, it's about using the right tool for the job, not about forcing a square peg in a round hole. 8k video standards were just agreed upon this year, in time linux will adapt..my workflow is now..i don't have the time to wait at work. I embrace open standards, but until that happens I will use the proprietary software that will work for my workflow.

I wonder why not a lot more distros have the option to choose software when installing. It's really awesome for quick customization.

I wish that things posted had "expiration dates". Something said about Arco - two years old MIGHT not still be correct today.

Hey DT, do you think SystemD is that bad to use? Do you think other init systems suchs as Runit or OpenRC are better than SystemD?

Hi distro, in fact for social media, the fact you have to proove you are you is weird, but imagine tomorrow, somebody decided to arras you and contact KZbin and say, I'm distrotube, the guy on the screen isn't me, delete this account... You should appreciate that a AI ( in my opinion that the way.😃) decides to analyse something that proove the complainant is false. But I agree, in think it's to sell something afterwards.

Nice video. I disagree with your points about Arch-based distros. Some background: Debian is the underpining for a lot of distros: Kali, Ubuntu, Mint, etc. Ubuntu is a behemoth that won't die when Debian goes away, but Kali will. All Arch-based distros won't survive if Arch was to go away because they rely heavily on the upstream channels. Ubuntu has enough developers to step in and take over. Manjaro relies on Arch and Arch | ARM, Arco and Artix relies on Arch. Arco basically puts a Debian spin on an Arch install - which takes away from the point of Arch. If I want a Debian-like distro then I would suggest use Debian. If you're more DIY then I'd suggest Arch or Void. If you hate systemd then, again, there's Void. To your point about something to offer: even though Mint won't last without Ubuntu, I think if offers the best "new user" experience that's close to what a Mac offers; the UI is really refined - any Mac or Windows user can navigate easily compared to stock Gnome-based Ubuntu.

I've considered something like Archlabs and Arcolinux to experiment with on a persistent usb or virtual machine, but I don't really see the point of jumping to a fork of Arch unless I have a specific reason. I'll just stick with vanilla Arch.

Hey DT, why don't you just use anarchy installer. It installs mainline arch and you can select custom packages to install. You can even easily chroot into the installation once your done if you got something during install.

I actually don't see anything bad on Facebook or Twitter. I tried Arch Linux, but I couldn't get Firestorm running on it. So, I'm now using Linux Mint. I feel it mothers me a bit too much, but new Linux users might like just that.

I think Luke Smith ran into this problem recently and found a way to host his PeerTube instance I think much more affordably. He might have some ideas? 🤷♀️
