@@enricosevenfoldism How can Manjaro be the most unstable when all the listed Distros literally use the same Arch repos with Manjaro even going through the extra "testing" stage? I believe this "Manjaro is unstable" myth stems from the fact that it's the Arch distro that has been in the spotlight for the longest and its reputation comes from a comparison with other non-rolling Distros.

Fully agree with Manjaro. I made the switch from a dual os Mint/Ubuntu 2 years ago and never looked back. I kept Mint around as a fallback for 6 months, and then just realized I never actually used it. Pretty stable, issues generallly find some community support that's clear & effective. Using xfce. For really the first 6 months, I didn't really even configured much of anything, it was good enough out of the box. Then with time got fancy and there's lots of things you can do to customize as with any arch distro I guess.

I use Artix as a daily driver not because I hate systemd, but because I tried it out, liked it and everything I need works on it. I also like the challenge of learning something else than systemd and because I believe competition in every niche, including init systems, accelerates progress. I definitely agree about the age of the ISO. (Also, to be fair, they also have their own repos, so the init isn't the only difference)
@LimDul
@LimDul 2 жыл бұрын
A word about Artix: As a super casual Linux dual-booter I am completely neutral about the init systems but I chose to install Artix OpenRC XFCE on an 11 year old netbook with an Intel Atom processor as a compromise of looks and performance after trying like 20+ (sometimes supposedly) lightweight distros. Protest distro or not aside, Artix is probably the closest to vanilla Arch out there - even closer than EndeavourOS - BUT offering Calamares and preconfigured DEs. The base image of Artix (without DE) is even LIGHTER than base Arch (around 290 packages vs around 370). With XFCE it is super light compared to anything apart from configuring the DE from scratch, using 275MB RAM and under 1% CPU on a massively underpowered and old machine. If you want something light, yet easily installable, give Artix a try. P.S. Using Manjaro on my main computer, so I'm not a fanboy or something. ;)

You admitted to being a little too harsh on a particular distro which is great for the entire Linux community. Unlike one particular KZbinr who not criticized - bashed Manjaro. This was disrespectful, disgraceful, and unacceptable. I think this individual forgot we are community of ideas freely shared with millions around the world through hard work, dedication, long hours, and a commitment to principles by countless individuals. Neat, always good to see what other folks have done using Arch as a base. Some of these I'm not too familiar with so it was good to see a spotlight on them. Hope you do a top five for Ubuntu based distros someday!

I've been using Artix for about four years and have been impressed. I'm using it as part of a very large project to document the migration and update of an old Gentoo installation to a new machine. The fact that it can use OpenRC means I have a shorter learning curve. I could've used a Gentoo-based distro for this, but my free time has been quite limited for a while. . . and Calculate Linux has been a bit of a problem for me in particular. . . By the way, I have noticed some mainline distros were hostile toward non-systemd init systems a few years ago, so I have avoided those and only plan to use those that give users a choice in init systems, or ones without systemd.

Also something to mention about arch updates is not everything is updated fast. Things like python on which hundreds if not thousands of packages depend upon being a compatible version are delayed until most packages that need python and other such packages add support

I first installed linux in 1996/97 and destroyed my windows installation. I do not even remember if there were any distros back then, and it was up to me to decide what desktop environment and window manager to use, what software to install from a whole list etc, then login in a command line, and start my desktop with startx. I think I need to try arch to get back to the roots :) Or stick to my Linux Mint cause I have other things to do than distrohop. Oh well... choices choices

Why would the install fail if you're using an old ISO? When you pacstrap it grabs the packages from the mirrors, not installs from the ISO, right? Or do these versions that include a desktop install the desktop and Xorg from the flash drive?

So if for whatever reason the official website doesn't have any suitable isos for you, you can build your own, and Eric will show you how.

When this video dropped I was busy configuring Manjaro - not everything was clear to me at start (it's my first consequent try of daily driving a Linux distro, I hopped around quite frequently before), but now I got everything up and running. And I'm stunned by how much easier Linux is than Windows once everything is set up!

Garuda really helped me make the leap to using Linux full time. I had been duel booting various distros with windows because I could never get gaming working satisfactorily with my level of knowledge. Garuda made it so simple to just start playing games with minimal tinkering. As a noob the out-of-the-box snapshots saved my ass many times. On other distros I would Bork my install then distro-hop, now I just restore to the last working snapshot with ease.

I genuinely *cannot* comprehend how you rate both Garuda and Arco above Endeavour. I've had massive issues with Garuda's DE stability, with all their customizations. Arco's website is extremely confusing, the details about the different versions of the ISO are confusing, and the installer is very, very broken, only installing a few of the packages I select, and installing loads of bloat I didn't. Manjaro, I can understand taking a lead over Endeavour from a usability prespective, though the Manjaro release model leaves something to be desired for stability. As a footnote that has nothing to do with my criticism of your ranking, Chaotic-AUR is not another AUR as you described it; It is a repository of precompiled versions of AUR packages. I particularly like to use it to grab ungoogled-chromium without leaving my conputer to build it for a few hours, saves me a ton of time and processing power.

@@autonaut279 That's why it's good; it's not trying to be insanely flashy, or include everything under the sun, you install it, and it just works. Minimal bloat, decent options, stable, and almost entirely as convenient to use as Manjaro if you bother to install pamac-aur, without the release model issues Manjaro has.

Garuda user here. Just wanted to note a couple of oddities with the distro. It was stated that the default shell is fish. This is only semi-true. When you open a terminal, you will be given a fish shell, but the shell environment variable is set to bash as far as I can tell. This means that any posix-compliant shell script should be able to run without issue, which wouldn’t normally be the case in a distro that defaulted to fish. Likewise, in the flagship Dr4gonized edition, there’s some weird stuff going on with kwin, x11 and wayland (at least from my perspective). I don’t understand how, but it appears both wayland and x11 are running at the same time. I think this is thanks to kwin, but I’ve been away from linux for about 7 years and a lot has changed; I’m still catching up.

Can confirm Manjaro i3. If you've been wanting to switch to WM, this is the absolute best way, because everything is already configured, and you can slowly start getting more comfortable with WMs, see the config files and learn from them, how they did it etc. and just fall in love with WMs. Once you get comfortable with WMs you will never use a DE again

I used to run mainline arch about a year ago.The core reason why i switched to artix was because there are a lot of power cuts in my area, and that causes systemd to startup and shut down really slowly even if I fix the problem which will return again when power cut happens again. Artix (at least the openRC version) doesn't have this issue.I don't know whether issue is fixed in systemd or not but I am just genuinely happy with artix as of right now (probably try out arch again when I will build my new rig).

I would have mentioned that MaBox Linux actually is Manjaro, just with a pre-configured OpenBox WM. I actually believe that's where the name comes from - Manjaro + OpenBox = MaBox. I am currently using MaBox and have also used Manjaro and can vouch for them being identical. The appeal of MaBox is the really nice default OpenBox configurations and the pre-configured tint2 panels, along with a range of interesting themes you can apply.

For exercising I also installed the original Arch Linux in several vms and physical, older notebook. The advantage aof this distro is, that you really installs only, what aou need. I've tried many ditros yet, Red Hat (before many years there olso was e free edition), fedora, suse, madrake, etc. But the best is really manjaro in my opinion.
