I had the honor of jamming with this band back in the early 2000's. They just kicked out their bass player and held open auditions. This is the song that I was asked to play in front of them. They ended up hiring a guy from another band that they already knew and had toured with...but still...an event in my life that I'll never forget.

You do realize David grew up as an orthodox (drum) jew and the way he was treated led him to a lot of his ideas. For someone who cares so much about the band I'm pretty surprised u don't know David's back story.
@deonnahepler5152
@deonnahepler5152 5 жыл бұрын
Um....I see it as David maybe asking God to return to him after his hardship of life as a younger man. His drug use and being cast out for his choice of music over his law education. He has a backstory so many don't really care enough to read. His pain is real and his music is his journey back to and thru his truth. Do a little research into the man and everything becomes clear as far as his message. And btw....I am NOT a Christian in anyway shape or form. I read the story and listened to interviews and understand. This reaction is so wrong in my opinion.

I was going to post that they don’t seem to realize what Draiman was about. He was responding to conservative Christians who would say great calamities were God’s wrath for liberal attitudes on insert culture war issue here. The song was his way of saying that as a devout Jew, God as portrayed by the fundamentalist evangelical televangelist types wasn’t the God he believed in- that if God was really the wrathful monster they portrayed Him as, he (Draiman) wasn’t intimidated by Him since he’d already endured his very own personal Hell.

Would love to take a trip and sit thru a sermon with ya some time! A Pastor like you, who is passionate about music and likes to pick apart the lyrics the way I do, could be what it takes to get me on a better path and understand things better. Keep up the great work, I am now subscribed and am super glad I stumbled upon your channel by accident this evening! David Draiman loves covering songs. In addition to “Shout” and “Sound of Silence”, Disturbed has done “Land of Confusion” by Genesis, “Midlife Crisis” by Faith No More, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2 (Disturbed shortened the title to “ISHFWILF”), and “Living After Midnight” by Judas Priest. Draiman’s other band, Device, covered “Wish” by Nine Inch Nails. “Inside the Fire” is a must and you need to know the backstory for best context discussion-David found his girlfriend after she hung herself when they were 16 and the song is based on his thoughts and emotions in that moment.

"It's like Job being put through trials and tribulations and still coming through unscathed and achieving his redemption," Draiman said. "In particular the song is about the clergy's reaction to 9/11[...] Instead of consoling their flock, people like Jerry Falwell and Oral Roberts chastised them and used the situation as a means of empowerment, saying it was our own fault because we're a decadent and promiscuous people. I just thought that whole notion is ridiculous. It's not very godly for a God to inflict pain and suffering on his people to elicit a response. I would hope that God wouldn't be that petty. But if that's what is happening and you're inflicting pain and suffering to get me to return [to the flock], bring it on. There's nothing that you're going to do to me that's going to change my conviction or change my path."

I honestly don't like his approach to this as much as the usual handling of content on this channel, but I like the idea of him being an intermittent guest simply because he changes the format of the videos up. Variety isn't something I consider bad, but I wouldn't want him as a replacement for how the channel usually runs. Having the songs play through with *QUIET* reactions then a post-song analysis is preferred for me in general.

@the_coycoyote
@the_coycoyote 5 жыл бұрын
@Johnny13Ghost yes you are correct, the music video is designed based on Job. "Prayer" was directed by the Brothers Strause as a music video in late June 2002 and released the next month. Vocalist David Draiman, who wrote the treatment for the music video, explained that the music video is based on the story of Job from the Bible. Throughout the music video, Draiman is walking down a street and passes various scenes of desperation, such as a prostitute, a homeless man, and a preacher predicting the end of the world. As Draiman continues to walk, the other members of Disturbed have various disasters befall them, and are presumably killed. (Steve Kmak is buried under falling debris, Dan Donegan crashes his car, and Mike Wengren is hit by a nearby construction explosion.) At the climax of the music video, Draiman survives an earthquake, and the remaining band members eventually come back to life and congregate with Draiman to play the last chorus. Draiman explains, "It's like Job being put through trials and tribulations and still coming through unscathed and achieving his redemption."[1] Upon release, various media outlets refused to air the music video for "Prayer", citing its alleged similarities to imagery from the September 11 attacks in the United States. Disturbed originally made plans to edit the video for airplay,[2] but eventually chose not to.[4] Draiman explained this choice when he said, "If we agreed to edit the video...then it's assuming that we're agreeing with the decision that there's something about the video that is offensive enough or provocative enough that it's dangerous for them to play it. We don't agree with that."[4] Draiman further criticizes the decision to take the video off of the air instead of other videos, "We don't have a character in our video who portrays Osama bin Laden and jumps and dances around, which is a direct recollective factor to 9/11."[4] The intent of the music video was not to depict similarity to the September 11 attacks, according to Draiman. He explained this by saying, "It was meant to be apocalyptic, but it was never intended to be derivative of the situation that happened on 9/11. Because of the subject matter...we needed something grandiose like an earthquake or a meteor shower or some kind of act of God to show the hand of the supernatural or some greater power."[4] He further explained that the video was actually meant to be uplifting. Draiman said, "[The video is] about getting through life's obstacles and all the tests that fate may throw at you in the process. It's trying to convince you that you have the strength to get through whatever trials and tribulations may come your way. It's supposed to inspire hope."[4] Despite "Prayer" receiving little airplay, Disturbed continued to promote the music video by including it on their album, Believe, and by posting it on various websites.[4]

Can I try and add another POV: All of it is him. Internal suffering. The old man versus the new. Issues we have here are simple: Observing and suffering around mankind. Being let down by unrealistic dreams or expectations. Reminding yourself of daily suffering is counter productive. You get in your head and the sound is “defeaning”. He then urges you and himself. Don’t listen or observe the world. You think it’s bad? Let me enlighten you. Living just isn’t hard enough - Burn me alive inside (kill immorality the old man) - Living my life’s not hard enough (depression makes you believe it is) - Take everything away - Revealing what is important. Anxiety, fear of nightmare tomorrow. We get lost in the edge of suffering. You give into the darkness and the world becomes threatening (loses faith). Reminds himself: Let me enlighten you - This is the way I pray - LIVING just isn’t had enough - Burn me alive inside (self hatred / doubt)- Living my life’s not hard enough - (Reminding himself God will only give us the cross we can bare) - *Cries out* Take everything away! BREAKDOWN. Spiraling. Return to me. Fighting with himself. Casting aside his inner demons. Pleading. Everything around him is gone. He’a still alive. He still prays faithfully. This song is steadfast. All praise to the most high 🙌🏼 Jesus is King :) PS, First set of verses seem like depressive statements (dwelling on past). The second set of verses seem like anxiety statements (fear of future). The now is staying steadfast. Reminding himself: This is the way he prays. He always wants God checking his ego. Whether he’s in a mansion surrounded by family or around crumbling buildings all alone - he - will remain with God. Some new age stuff for sure. I just know I have had some recent struggles. My nephew was born premature. Everyone is stressed and everything feels laced with enemy these days. I pray we all put the Lord’s armor on and that we all remain steadfast in The Lord. * Also, when he prays he auras. Empowered by his faith. Whether he’s 100% referring to Jesus or self empowerment - let’s - for sake of argument give this a 5/5 on the “spiritual” level probably OK to listen to with a heart in Jesus. Though it is obviously not 100% a Christian song. Let’s just remember God reflects in us. Whether we know it or not he’s crying out just like David Draiman is in this song “Prayer” by Disturbed. * I listened to disturbed as an angst teen. As an adult, sometimes when I am edgy, I love a solid Disturbed song. Since building a rapport with Jesus I find some songs oddly spiritual. Because I sing to rejoice The Lord. IE, Universe by Coldplay feat. BTS, not a Christian song, has Christian application if your heart desires hahaha

This song is about the singers life experience choosing to do music. He was jewish. His grandfather disowned him for the choice over him being a musician over a nurse. He didnt make ambends until his grandfather was on his death bed. Its beautiful

Draiman wrote the song shortly after his grandfather passed away, and is supposed to be the conversation he had with God afterwards.(sort of the conversation) The video was also released shortly after 9/11 because people did not like the video with the buildings falling apart. People claimed it reminded them off the Towers falling.

One thing that I think you missed is that the singer, by birth is Jewish but in practice is an Atheist. So his reverse Job-esque challenge to god is not about testing his faith because he isn’t devout in the first place. It honestly feels more to me like he’s essentially getting across the same message as the song Stronger by Emphatic. “I can’t believe in you any longer, I am stronger, stronger than you.”

As a Christian myself I have never shond any of the previous music I listened to before I become a Christian. I was able to change the original meaning of what the writer/singer meant to a Christianity style meaning which gave the song a total different meaning by far. Example Disturbeds song You're Mine is their first love song. In my head I turned it 180 degrees for Christianity

I took "burn me alive inside" as when it says in the Bible, how we will be refined by fire. Maybe that he wants the sin and the negative feelings to be burned and to be burn in his love for God and since he's only filled with rage, this is the way he prays... But it's still a prayer and an attempt to learn to walk with God.

I saw it mentioned below, but David’s life has shaped his world views, and is a practicing Jew that has studied in Israel. This song plays into the theme of the album which is stated “the album is about questioning your beliefs to determine what you can really believe in” and was inspired by tragedy on both a personal level as well as what was happening in the world at the time. But you are correct that this song in particular is a conversation between David and God after the death of his grandfather and the 9/11 attacks. It is meant to affirm to God that his spirit and beliefs (Jewish) will not be broken despite what is thrown at him. It is also inspired by the way some clergy reacted to 9/11 by saying it was our own fault for being a decadent and promiscuous people.

One common trend I see is that through the music I have listened to is that people expected Christianity to make their life better, and become angry at god. Christianity is not a bandaid, as I have learned from reading and listening to the Bible, I found that Christianity is a duty. This life is designed to separate the seed from the chaff, am I wrong? Open to discussion.

Surprised that it doesn't look like anyone's mentioned it yet, but David Draiman was raised in a devout Jewish environment (hence the singing style) so that he would reference Job isn't a surprise. Distrurbed has an amazing emotional depth that is missing in a lot of metal bands.

I think you guys misinterpreted what Draiman was aiming for around the 12-minute mark. He was taking his frustrations of things happening around the time out through the song, reminding people of certain hypocrisies in light of how some clergymen were responding to said events (9/11 was the big one, but he was also mourning the loss of his grandfather). It wasn't that he was arguing with God, so much as he was arguing with the God that they portrayed while dealing with the grief and frustration of those events. The song was sort of like therapy, allowing him to let his frustration out. He felt as many of us did back then. "Living my life isn't hard enough" - Being good people dealing with life, and then having a tragedy like that hit. Wondering what was done to deserve that sort of pain and suffering, then also questioning why men like those clergymen can misrepresent the facts and get away scotfree. He didn't think it was a proper or righteous thing to blame the victims and the people mourning. Prayers should have been said, and faith instilled, not blame and damnation. ~~~~~~~~~~ This is Via Wikipedia's page for Prayer: "Prayer" was inspired lyrically by two events. The first event was the death of vocalist David Draiman's grandfather, the second was the September 11 attacks, chiefly the response the clergy made to the events. Draiman explained, "Instead of consoling their flock, people [of the clergy] like Jerry Falwell and Oral Roberts chastised them and used the situation as a means of empowerment, saying it was our own fault because we're a decadent and promiscuous people. I just thought that whole notion is ridiculous."[1] Therefore, "Prayer" is about a conversation between Draiman and God. In the conversation, Draiman is telling God to "bring it on" if he is trying to use pain to elicit a response from Draiman.[1]

I have a few reasons why I searched for this song. It came from other songs and albums and a love of them. I was raised with religion. I hated God when my Mom died and my life fell apart and I didn’t know how to deal and I remember praying for over 10 hours each day i sat alone with her as a young kid in the hospital. She said that of anything will save her it’s prayers. Our church (in my young opinion then) would announce her each mass and Id cry and I’d hear the sympathies. Huge church. Only two people out of the BIG and “involved” congregation...I went to school and volunteered with young kids during it - which Ive always loved kids - and it was my escape but I was also desperate to get help to get to the library to spend time and feel important and distract myself. But the people there... they said they’d help with me - if they didn’t want me to stay home alone at night, at least i could get a ride from volunteering to see her. They didn’t come through. She died. They didn’t acknowledge me after i kept staying after she died because it was important to her. Maybe i was young. Maybe i was so bitter. Maybe i felt to alone. Maybe I just felt it was unfair. Anyway. The whole 5 months from her diagnosis to her dying, she asked people for their prayers to help her. She died. I was alone there and watched it. I got stuck with hospital staff for hours until someone decided to volunteer to drive me home, but it wasn’t a home anymore without her. I’m going to skip lots of stuff. But what I just want to ask is this: I think things happen for a reason. But this is the biggest thing that’s been over half of my life that I haven’t tried to learn or seek or pray or ANYTHING about to just try to hear even a GUESSED answer. Ive grown and tried to answer it. I’ve hated God since. My father is high up in his church (he’s Lutheran, but I grew up Roman Catholic my entire life from my Mom’s insistence). Is there any way for me to try to make sense of any of that? Just like in this song (idk if you know his story with god family and life etc), but as much as I try to hate religion...I trust both my parents’ belief in it and I just want some guidance or advice. Please. :)

First I believe God will raise you up and help you in the pain you have experienced. And in this complicated topic let me tell you that there are several things that may be complex due to the greatness of God. Now for me to not only tell you God is good and what happenned happened and you have to keep on moving. First there are things that we will never understand but God gives us ideas in order for us to keep on going. Second this world is evil and corrupted (even genetically ) and all the anomallies are not according to his original purpose but a consequence, God knew knowledge could be dangerous (sometimes we create stuff thinking is good and years later that type food can give you cancer and thats because we are human). Imagine Jesus who did nothing wrong was hated and suffered more than anyone else and that may be your case you didn't choose this. Now that aside, this does not mean that he does not love us, those of us who have suffered a lot mostly believe that he is against us but as someone who will always love us but is fair there are a lot of things that he has to do and wants to do and plenty of them we can not understand. But while you seek him I can surely tell you there is an answer. He says that all the things do good to those who love them and I believe that is a form in which he shows love to us in this chaotich world. He does not says everything is good. But he says to you that he loves you and even if you lived this tragical incident if you follow him he will somehow find a way for you to be alright. He did it in me and he continues to do it saving me from everything that happened and happens. Stay strong nothing wrong will come from someone who insists so much in telling you that he loves you in many ways. 😁✌ . Hope it helped
