Back in the 1960's Art Garfunkel of Simon and Garfunkel sang this song with the voice of an angel telling a story of what people were doing to each other. Five decades later David Draiman sang this song with the voice of an avenging angel, with fire in his eyes and blazing sword held high, telling the story of what people had done to each other. Same song, same lyrics but a completely different meaning by two amazing artists. Love your reviews.

Is it entirely live, though? The timpani player looks suspect. He is producing 3-4 different pitches from only two kettle drums without using a pedal to change the pitch. There is a lack of consistency between the kettle drum he strikes and the resulting pitch.

I’m old enough to have listened many times to the original, which to me was a warning……this version makes me cry every time I listen, David’s voice has so much emotion in it, and it’s anger at us not listening to the warning of the original. I am forever a huge Disturbed fan !!

Simon and Garfunkel wrote the song around the time of President Kennedy's assassination and during the Vietnam War. It was a warning to people about not communicating and no one listened. It could have easily been written today with the way things are. I was about 5yrs then so a bit too young to understand what it was about. David Draimans version of it makes you feel the words. I'm a Grandmother of 6 and it's on my bucket list to see Disturbed. Don't think that will happen though. 😁 🏴

Magnificent performance from David. Of course, the "emotion and passion" you noticed here was done (and can be at least tried by any would-be singer for that matter) by simply holding and sustaining the notes of the song, not by trilling and running on them. That way, the really soulful lament of the words stands out, and you remember them.
@jeffstevens4262 Жыл бұрын
I heard that in a later interview, David admitted to be so emotional after this particular live performance, he burst into tears behind the scenes afterwards. One thing I noticed about his incredible vocals, is that despite reaching those high notes, he never seems to strain his voice. He has an incredible vocal range.

@@Albatross-365 I read the auto tune is from it being broadcast. Rumor is he wasn’t happy that it ended up being there but there wasn’t anything anyone could do. I am enjoying your reactions. David is an excellent singer and I think he hits the emotional aspects of this song because of his training as a chazzan (a Jewish cantor). This has become a standard for the band, always expected at their live gigs! David and his brother were trained Jewish cantors. He turned to metal and his brother is an opera singer. Paul Simon said he wrote this after a dream and the meaning is still argued about. The video I feel talks of the rediscovery of lost music. One island find the sheet music, the other find the instruments and travel to them... Paul Simon saw THIS very performance on Conan and loved it. Poor David was really poorly with a bad cold when he sung it on Conan, so I urge you to watch the official video to hear David in top form and the visuals really add to the music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJyag4mtaK5rm8k Check these interviews with David... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKWxl6qlgKljjqM kzbin.info/www/bejne/baauiXuui550i8U David being interviewed and performing on stage The Vengeful One and Sound of Silence... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKqZhYamq5t1gtU The official video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qnmGCdbNllopY The original Simon and Garfunkel version... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHKooaN8irx_nMU Fascinating that Pentatonix chose to cover Disturbed’s version rather than the original... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZW5m4mqpddoa68 One of Disturbed’s classic tunes!!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmqvhYdmrdyXnNk
