When we came back to the Bay Area from our Singapore trip after God knows how many hours, we were stuck in a super long line in SFO, like ridiculously long. Our 2 kids were melting down and they were tired, beyond exhausted! It was super stressful. We could not believe there wasn't any priority lanes for families. In contrast when we travel to SG or most international airports (most recently mexico) there was always a priority lane for families. It is shocking how airports here in the US are not family friendly at all.

I have had similar issues where I had a box of Malaysian goodies that I checked in but had to go through custom check again at LA airport when on transit to Arizona. I have snacks and packets of sauces (no meat). Just because I have 5 packs of each item, I was interrogated as if I am a criminal. My box was torn apart and I practically had to struggle getting the things in while I catch my connection. I was lucky coz there's this kind gentleman from Seremban heading to Arizona waited and helped me. Can you imagine how stressful I was? If not for him, I will probably miss my flight. At the counter of my connection, the lady from 'X' Airlines (prefers not to reveal that airline) was such a wonderful person as well. She saw my box and she said 'custom did this, huh'. She tape my box back as best as she could and check it in. I mean, I am really grateful to the 2 strangers that helped me. What I can say is, US customs are never tactful let alone understanding or friendly. I hate traveling to US. I really understand how you must have felt.

I had this happen in Lihue, Hawaii airport..it was so ridiculous..I was having medical issues also..they had to know what my heat patches were for,( pain) I had to repeat to everyone,several times..i had my diabetic meds and pens( dr. Letter,etc) I had to remove patches so they could look under them..of course they never stay on appropriately after that..I paid extra to have a seat on a certain side of plane( so I could prop my arm and shoulder).. I get called to gate check in to be told they had to change my seat..of course by then I was in severe pain,angry,etc...I of course receive seat on the side of plane I had paid extra to " NOT SIT"!!!! Of course they wanted to give me $25.00 for my next flight..I will never go to Lihue ever again because of airport or delta....done

Me too! I still remember when I travel to Vancouver for working purpose. I am being hold at security room for like 4+ hours, just because I have "Muhamad" in my names, and then they found out rice cooker inside my back, and they asked me with such discrimination questions: Where I am hiding my bomb, where is the place where I'm gonna blow up. I'm like wtf, I am Malaysian! I came here for works! What makes you to judge me that I am terrorist!? Just because I have "Muhamad" on my name!? That rice cooker I bring along is to cook rice, I am Malaysian, I need to eat rice. I'm really really shocked with that experienced tho. So disgraceful act from them. Glad my colleagues from there help me with it. If not, idk what will happened to me. From that experienced, I swear, I will never ever back to US, either works purpose or vacations. I'm sorry citizen of United States, but your government officials/airport security idk what you all called them, they really gave bad bad impressions. The discrimination there is so ridiculous.

I can totally feel for you all. Being a former flight crew , i have been through this kind of inspection even when we are on duty and in uniform mind you. Despite knowing full well what we can and cannot bring onboard we are not spared. We have to go through pat down, take off our shoes, our belts and even at time our neatly combed up hairdos ( it’s time consuming to do up the hair) just because they want to make sure nothing is hidden inside your hairdos. Omg it’s absolute nightmare. That is customs . When it comes to immigration going into US it’s no better regardless the port of entry. Well after a 16 hours flight, in uniform, flying in on duty the 1st thing you want to do would be to crash on your bed and get a good sleep BUT before you could do that and IF you are one of those unlucky one out of your group that get picked for immigration interrogation , Good Luck. You will be interrogated like a criminal even when they know full well you are here on duty. They will asked you the same questions again and again, oh please , come on, do you think I will be able to think straight after such long hours and you can’t loose your temper with them, otherwise you will be hold up longer. By the time they are done with you it will probably be 2-4 hours later and you have to find your own transport to your hotel, as the rest of your colleagues already left the airport provided by the company. Once you have gone through this for 1 time , you will be called up again and again every single time you enter US to the extend that some of my colleagues just request the company not to roster them to fly to States. I am just glad that I don’t have to go through all these nightmares anymore and I am not and don’t intend to , now and future to step foot in that country. God bless. Just glad that you all made it through and landed landed in Malaysia safely. Enjoy yourself here and let that horrible episode be bygones.

The procedural and official behavior at the airport was tremendously change after 2001 event. Most of the Immigration and Airport Security Officers are doing the Religious and Racial Profiling at their airport. As a muslim woman wearing hijab, I always get the pat down through most airports in Europe while I was traveling there. The machine never once beep when I walked through it. I usually travel alone & was so used to it but there’s this one time I travelled with my Malaysian friend; the machine beeped coz she forgot she was wearing a chain. She was never pat down but I, the one who went through the machine after her was patted down. So my friend found it weird & start me thinking on the “R” word

I understand the rules and policies things but the way the staff were handling it was... I must say bad and inefficient. They could have just said this or that are not allowed from the get-go, but instead they only asked the Kumaars to just wait. OK, the checking takes turns and takes time. Fine. But then the stuffs were just sitting there without being checked at all (of which they only did after the Kumaars complained that they were going to be late for their flight if the checking is still not done). All of these could have been avoided if they had done their job properly.

In Kl, water bottle cannot get in unless its vacuum sealed or empty. I remember one guy brought in water bottle which he bought in the airport and its vacuum sealed. On my US trips, I really get cold feet in LA Airport, especially the dog check when you queue in line and the hand luggage scan, I had once stopped for my Thai oilment bottle. The officer said do not touch the bag and I was like ok then how are you going to open it since its locked? I was praying hard, hope he is not going to tear the zip and spoil my hand carry. He let me unlock and keep saying do not touch the bag (he sounded just like in American movies) . He took my oilment bottle and went to his supervisor and the supervisor said its fine and let her go. So, I just said thanks and move on quickly. Sometimes, it's just nothing but they still want to check and you know why deep down. Sigh. One thing I learnt, never show your fear in airports especially in foreign lands. Just act cool.

Sorry to hear of this. The expectation is that, if you needed water prior to boarding, you can ask from any of the eateries available for hot water. Otherwise, you can request for hot water on the plane. Liquids for drinking are not allowed to be brought in, unless it's milk for the babies. Now milk for babies have got to be in their baby bottles. I've travelled with half-drank milk bottles, milk powder either portioned out or still in the formula can. They won't take it away but they will ask ask you to pour a drip or two out on the back of your hand and ask that you taste it in front of them. However, this has only happened to me once. The milk that you had seemed to have looks like prepackaged milk that's bought from the supermarket. They probably just want you to buy that from the airport at higher mark-ups. That said, I have not travelled to the US and this is my experience travelling from Asia to Europe with my kids since they were 6 months old.

Sorry that your family and you had to go through all that. I truly feel for you all. I faced almost similar experience when traveling to Brisbane with my 5-year old son in 2010. All milk products had to be confiscated, and of course, including baby milk powder. We explained that my toddler son needed them but rules are rules according to the custom officers. In 2019, when I traveled to Perth, I was the among the very few who were isolated for thorough pat down and body scan. Though I complied fully in the name of security, I kept wondering why I was singled out and not the many others. Is it just a random thing and I just happened to be picked or was there another reason? All these never happened to me when I traveled to Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Germany, and New Zealand. So, Logesh and Rachel, I can truly relate to your frustration and anger.

So sorry to hear about what happened, it must have been so frustrating for you guys. Flying with young children is stressful enough (I’m a parent myself) and coupled with this kind of unnecessary stress… my goodness! My husband is French and I’m Malaysian and this has never happened to us every time we go back to France or even in Geneva or Amsterdam airports (not sure about the other EU countries though). Yes not even in Malaysia or other Asian airports, nor in Dubai, Qatar or Istanbul airports during our layovers. We’ve never experienced this sort of thing. In fact, at these aforementioned airports they’ve been nothing but kind and understanding of families with young children ❤️ giving us special lanes and right of way to board the airplane first. It’s deeply unfortunate that this is happening in the US of all places! Why the bureaucracy I must ask? The part about the bottled water I get it, it’s standard procedure across the world however the sealed bottles of milk and pat down?!? It doesn’t make sense. My guess is employees just blindly following the rules without being pragmatic. Think people, think….

Americans were built differently, that's all. Those who were exposed by Asian countries with their services must've been surprised on the hospitality whether in KLIA, restaurants and so forth. If only management could be efficient and values on hospitality are taught in schools since young. (I'm saying this on my views about stereotypes, not all Americans are like this, but when they compare their hospitality against Asian countries, they are no match, especially Japan. I will admit that as a Malaysian that both efficiency and hospitality is best in Japan, but most asian countries tend to get better at it) I hope no other families will go through this situation as such.

Once my Mom went to Tokyo for a vacation and brought 10 boxes of Boh Tea as souvenirs for her Japanese friends. She got stopped by Japanese customs and they took out each box of Malaysia’s famous BOH Tea, measured and weighed while recording their findings. I waited outside for her for 2 hours. Things like this could happen anywhere, even Japan.
@evoun96
@evoun96 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeaninjapan463 I agree this could happen everywhere. But this is justified IMO. Tea is made from leaves and probably was misjudged as weed or bringing anything plant related diseases to the country. If they thought that it was a weed, should be released asap. I'm not sure if they did the analysis that took them 2 hours upon your mom's release or just inefficient but that sure is a long time. I watched the Australian Borders series last time, and the only thing that should be done is confiscate and eliminate the tea entirely and fine if it is the 2nd repeated mistake(if it is under disease control). Nevertheless, it could be much faster as long as it is not a drug/medication issue. Since international affairs are involved anything could happen. Did she manage to get the tea boxes back though? I'm curious. Probably I'll bring some overseas too for my friends elsewhere if she did. As far as mine from Russia to Malaysia is no problem. I once brought rice flour from Malaysia to Russia. The security was curious thinking it was cocaine they checked everything for 30 mins. I got passed because all of it is just normal cooking stuff.

So… you arrived “three hours early” for your flight but were “about to be late for our flight” for a bag check on a dead checkpoint? That’s sounds a bit far fetched. Observing the video, the checkpoint doesn’t appear to be overly busy. When flying with children, you only had to walk through a metal detector. You causing a scene, filming and using profanity couldn’t have helped your cause. Nobody is fond of airport security but this crew seems to be extremely fair and understanding. Anyone who has traveled in the last 15-20yrs knows that any oversized liquid is going to result in a bag check and delay your experience.

Stuff like this doesn't even surprise me anymore. Having no common sense seems to be the norm. And every airport has different regulations so it's hard to know what they want from you before hand. The worse experience we had was when my mother in law from Malaysia came to Denver to visit us. She was 70 and she had 1 carry-on bag that she put sweets in for the kids in Malaysia. Because the bag was old, the zipper was broken so she sewed it up after putting the candy inside. She was in a wheelchair at the time so we got to walk her through the gate until the last check point. At that time they took her bag and ripped it open so the candy spilled everywhere. It was all over the floor when they made her stand up and from the wheelchair so they could pad her down. Then they threw the bag at her and she had to pick up the candy by herself. I was in shock. I ran over to help her and security told me to stand back. They said if I touch her they have to pad her down again. I was heartbroken that they could treat a 70 year old woman with such disrespect.

I had a very audible argument with the security at the time and even prayed that if they ever set foot at any airports around the world they would get Karma back. I understand that you guys were stressed about the situation, however, you didn't give her a chance to offer you the option of doing an explosive detection test on the milk and a pat down. Basically went straight to conclusions. Usually when checkpoints get extremely busy, management might have passengers waiting awhile for their pat downs while they try to get more people screened so that could've been why it took so long for a pat down. Also, there would be an insane number of lawsuits if they allowed screeners to pat down the opposite gender...

I have not personally experienced racism nor bad behaviour directed at myself, from any US immigration nor customs, but at one occasion, at the Seattle immigration an old Chinese man with his grandson in front of us in the queue, was shouted at because the little boy needed to go to the washroom. The immigration guy, big, white and burly after shouting at them, muttered "these people don't understand English". Both my husband and I were upset at such blatant racism and bad behaviour from the Seattle immigration towards an old man and a young kid. Since then, we have preferred to travel to Europe and other parts of Asia.

@@saltmaker5353why shouldn't he complain ? It's a perfectly reasonable platform to complain and air your frustrations. Your comment reeks of superiority vibes.

my worst experience is border entering sg from malaysia while on bus tours....old people and children waiting on a very long queue(no special queue except sg citizen) they only 1 toilet booth set up outside and its full of tissue paper which has super long queue too while on queue an old man passed out because standing in a queue for 3 hours u are not even allowed to record video or picture there

They usually threw any liquid above 3 oz. They don’t ask us. Body washes, make up etc will also get trashed. I usually buy the water after security check at a store if I get thirsty. Some stores sell low fat or other kind of milks after the check up. If there is no replacement then it is a tough situation unless you can take a milk powder.

It is because America is the country that suffered most from terrorist attacks and hijackings which culminated to 911 so the government decided enough is enough so they created the TSA

Is there not a ml limit of liquids one is allowed in take on luggage? When I travel it is 100ml. That milk looked like a small quantity per container. I have had so much confiscated although I have been given the option of posting my items or handing it to someone who can take it home for me but who wants to do this when you are running to get to your gate.. I wonder what happens to all the confiscated items. The rules change to suit the customs official it seems, and not based on Airport rules. I am also a walking target. I wear a head scarve and I am brown. I don't want to consider prejudice. I am sorry you had to go through this. I know the feeling and it is awful.

At 2008, i had my first trip to USA with my colleague for training. We're landed at L.A.X. and waiting for our connection flight to Logan airport (we need to go out from one terminal and going to another terminal) While getting back into the airport, all 3 of us get into a special area where everyone of us get to have our laptop wiped for explosive material😅😅😅 and all of our bag was specially scan and we get a pat down. Kinda scary for a first time visitor..........
