Overnight ferry - what a civilized way to travel!
@nursejanainholland197810 ай бұрын
You just have to *pray* for calm seas. I made this journey in late September 2022, and a horrible wind storm blew on us. We were seasick and vomiting, as was most of the other passengers, through the whole night.
@theoztreecrasher264710 ай бұрын
@@nursejanainholland1978 Yep. After chundering almost all the way from Patras, Greece to Brindisi, Italy on a first trip through Europe, I learned that aircraft might be a bit cramped but they are a lot more civilized method of crossing stormy seas! 😱🙄😬

Great video - thanks for giving me another option for travel between London and The Netherlands. In 2020 I travelled by train from London to Vladivostok (East coast of Russia) via the nordic countries. This involved a ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki. I was very impressed by the overnight ferry. I had a simple single room overlooking the central atrium. The room included a good en-suite bathroom and I pre-purchased a nice evening meal as well as breakfast in a restaurant. Even choosing these slightly more expensive options the price was very reasonable for my budget backpacker type holiday.

I went the opposite way with train travel from Amsterdam to the Hook of Holland, Stena Line over to Harwich, England and then the train into London. I stayed in an internal cabin as I arrived in the nightime and left it in the early morning - no need for a window. It was about $120 Cdn in 2018 and much cheaper than a hotel/B and B for just one night and it included travel. It was so very peaceful and easy of a trip - I would highly recommend it.

Reminded me of our sailing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Argentia, NL, this past summer. A very similar ferry, although we had a less expensive cabin. A wonderful way to stretch the travel dollar by getting accomodations included in the trip.

Your excellent travelog certainly evoked happy memories. As an American graduate student I made the trip in the opposite direction over a half century ago. Things were less luxurious then, tho I did travel 1st class from Harwich to London. As the North Sea was remarkably calm, and it was the daytime crossing, I spent most of the time on deck savoring the thrill of my first ocean travel -- but it was a treat to be able to get a pint and snacks on the ferry. I look forward eagerly to your impressions of Holland. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did !

Progress 30 years ago intercity boat train 1 HR 15 London to Harwich (hook continental) non stop Before cheap flights it's how people travelled. With train connects in Holland across the rest of Europe.
@cintha350210 ай бұрын
Assume the ticket no longer included onward journey from Hook, as the town used to to be connected by train to the rest of NL. It was only changed (up/downgraded?) to a Metro a few years ago.

Ah I see thank you for that. A shame would be an amazing deal now.

Rotterdam to Amsterdam by train takes just over 1 hour 15 min, or 43 min. by direct Intercity at a slight additional charge.

No need to buy a ticket for the metro to Rotterdam. Just use your contactless payment card to tap in. This goes for all the public transport in The Netherlands; bus tram metro train.

@melaniedrogr95110 ай бұрын
i mean 90 pounds for rail and sail seems to be pretty comparable price to an eurostar ticket. Altough it is a shame the ns left the rail and sail ticket (but this is also due to the fact that they do not operate the line from hoek van holland to rotterdam anymore. (ridership has increased by a lot since it is a metro line tough (mostly people going to the beach)). And one final thing, if you want to go to utrecht or gouda, it is best to keep sitting in the metro untill you reach rotterdam alexander station. While if you want to go to breda, or roosendaal, it is best to remain untill the rotterdam blaak station.

Well, welcome, but I do hope you managed to venture further than just to Holland (N&S) ... ‼️ The The Netherlands has 10 more Provinces that are well worth a visit too, and quite different from what you experience in Holland - different local cultures, dialects, scenery & food specialties. Be brave and go south to visit beautiful Nth. Brabant, for instance. Or west to visit the oldest (and Roman) Dutch city of beautiful Nijmegen in Gelderland. Or visit Arnhem (site of WW2 Operation Market Garden). Be adventurous🫣!
